In this video we'll be using Wordfence to completely secure your WordPress website step by step. Let me show you what we'll be covering in this tutorial. I'll show you how to configure all the options in Wordfence. How to force strong passwords for all users. How to set up two-factor authentication, how to use reCaptcha to prevent bot logins. We will configure brute force protection for your website and we will make sure you won't get spammed with email alerts from Wordfence. Let's dive in right now.
Log in to your WordPress dashboard. From here we go to 'Plugins'
we press 'Add new' plugin. We're going to search for the plugin Wordfence over there. And we're looking for this one, by Wordfence. Press 'Install now'. and we press 'Activate'. The first thing we need to do is get a Wordfence license. It's completely free but we still have to register with Wordfence. Click on this button, and then we are at the Wordfence website. Click on this button, get a free license. Then we press I'm okay waiting 30 days. Fill in your email address and then choose if you would like to receive these emails. I would say no, because they're not that interesting. Agree to the terms and press register. And we have received a email from Wordfence with our license. Over here is the license key which you can also click install my license automatically. When you click on the button it will go over here back to your website. Your email address has been filled in and also the license key. Press install license. Well done. Now we click on go to dashboard. And press on this cross icon over here. I will teach you everything about Wordfence in this tutorial. Don't worry we'll be working through all these settings over here and I'll explain everything how it works and what you need to know. So the very first thing we do is we scroll up to here and then we're gonna click on dismiss. Because we're gonna configure this later on. And then Wordfence ask do you want to say it up to date automatically? if you don't update your website regularly I really urge you to press yes enable auto updates. This way the plugin will stay safe and you won't get hacked. So press on yes enable auto updates. Let's walk through all these options step by step. The first thing we do is we go over here to the firewall. Let's press this cross icon over there. Wordfence has a learning mode where it distinguish real visitors from hackers and Bots, but it also learns from your plugins and how your plugins are connected to the outside world. For example if you have a web shop you might be connected to different things like your accountancy and all these things will be passed through the firewall without any problems. So this learning mode is only active for just one week. Now if you run into problems in the future, you can always enable the learning mode again, so that it can learn again from maybe new settings or maybe new plugins or whatever. If we scroll down you can see all bunch of real important information. The most important thing on this page is the blocking over here. If you're logged out of someone who need to visit your website his IP address will show up over here. And then you can unblock an IP address or make it for example permanent. Let's go back to firewall let's configure all the firewall options over here. And if you scroll down we can change all the options one by one. The first thing we need to do is change the protection level from basic WordPress protection to a optimized version. So click on optimize the WordPress firewall and then Wordfence has presented the best...

@@WPressDoctor- Yeah, I've watched this video and Ithemes countless times that I could certainly make a video myself. 😂 I do plan to give RUclips a try sometime soon. I use Wordfence for my blogs and I use Ithemes for online shops. My latest blog is in the pet niche all about pet accessories. This is an unplanned project where I’m testing if I could manage my own VPS or not. 😂 So far everything is going well and Plesk is easier than I originally thought it was. Plus, it’s got a massive online community so you can find an answer to any problems you may have.

@@WPressDoctor No, I'm using WPForms. I was a complete newbie when I started building my site. I started with a lot simpler tool from my hosting provider, but that turned out to be too limiting for what I needed so I went with the other option the hosting company provided; WordPress. I found another youtuber with a very comprehensive tutorial for how to set up a WP-site from scratch and he recommended WPForms along with some other plug-ins. As I slowly get some experience I might be changing different plugins to suit my needs better, but this is my starting point as for now.

Hi, i do have another question. Is it possible to exclude a url of a page from caching. I am having problems with my booking systeem and synchronization with ICal calendar. I love Wordfence, but I hate the fact that they purposefully do not offer the option to change the login URL. This is a deal breaker for me, so I will follow your other video when I'm securing my Woocommerce store. I'm using SG Security at the moment, but I'm leaving them in two months. So Ithemes will take their place. One thing I didn't like about Ithemes was the lack of a scan feature, but your video has done the trick, it seems, and we now have the scanning feature.🙌
Hi Al! Yeah it seems so! I haven't looked into the SG security plugin yet. It should work but well... IDK yet. Where are you going to host then?
@@WPressDoctor --- The SG security plugin offers all the basic security features like 2-FA, allows you to change the admin URL, allows you to disable XML-RPC, allows you to disable the themes and plugin editor, and allows you to limit the login page to your own IP and limit login attempts. It has most features for basic security, but it's missing a scanning feature and a few other features. I'm moving the store to WPX, which is a highly-rated hosting provider with excellent customer service. They offer some unique free perks like free malware removal, speed optimization, and many more. The main factor for me is speed, and WPX is well ahead of SG.
SG is decent, but their service is on the decline in terms of speed.

Hey WPressDoctor, I configured Wordfence exactly as you did. However, when a subscriber wants to login to my website, he/she receives a verification link in the email address used in creating the account. The subscriber then has to login through that verification link.
I don't want that. How do I turn that off please?

Well the biggest difference between them is the Hiding Backend feature of iThemes that I really like and the Malware scan of WordFence is excellent… I prefer iThemes also because of the clean interface 😀👍🏻 But it totally depends on personal preference. It’s like windows vs Mac I think 🤔

Hi Derek! I prefer the iThemes plugin above SG. It has a bit more features and has been around for a long time, so yeah, iThemes seems still the best choice.

A quick question you can maybe help me with: I have set up Wordfence as described, but now my layout is sometimes a bit messed - mainly the images (I'm using Elementor). As soon as I reload the page, it usually looks normal again. Could this be caused Wordfence? Perhaps you know more about this.

Hi there! Thanks for your kind words and the question. That sounds a bit strange that the images are distorted because of WordFence. Sounds more like a caching problem. But you can easily check this if you still have it when disabling the WordFence plugin 😀👍🏻 let me know how that goes!
@@WPressDoctor Thanks for the super fast answer. Quick update: It wasn't actually because of Wordfence, but apparently because my host temporarily shut down the performance of my website after it was hacked to make sure the performance of the other websites on the server were still working (hope that makes sense, I'm not too familiar with the topic so far). Now the images are loading perfectly again :)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new videos from you. Already learned a lot about FTP and other stuff on your channel. So thanks a lot!
