There seems to be a resurgence in comments complaining about the quality of track and whether it’s safe to carry nuclear waste on... first of all, there’s a 5-10mph speed limit on the line for a reason and secondly, a variation of this train has been running on this line for more than 40 years with absolutely no issues as far as I can recall. They wouldn’t be running it if it wasn’t safe to do so people!
You should link the old test video where they smashed a locomotive into those waste containers, even if something happened and the train slowly derailed or the wagon tipped over the container would be fine.
From a basic physics principle, as long as those rails are held down at 1435mm between the vertical surfaces of the inside of the rails, and there is no danger of landslips (none evident) or sinkholes (unlikely), those containers were judged "good to go" and the whole video makes me proud of safety methodology.
I'm no train-spotter Mark, but these lads just "capture stuff" and the video and sound quality is pure "Attenborough" (but for machines - give or take a bush or tree).
Dungeness B is still very much generating electricity, the flasks are under the white cover you can see on the vid, these trains carry spent fuel from the reactor to Sellafield up in Cumbria, all the low level stuff go's by road to Drig, don't worry about security as the lid on the flasks needs specialist kit to remove and weigh several tons, if you were daft enough to try and get in one the civil nuclear constabulary would be very interested very quickly and they are armed, if you did succeed in getting the lid off it would be all over even quicker.
I can reassure you Scotty, that they were there to ensure you were exercising. This is why they were armed. It was nothing to do with the spent fuel-rod casks.
You met the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Britain’s smallest police force and the only Home Office Constabulary to be routinely always armed. They escort all movements of nuclear material. Basically they are full time anti terrorism police and we are lucky to have them.
Can't get enough footage on the flask wagon trains! Brilliant, very creepy but Dungeness is on of my favourite places. Used to holiday there in the sixties as a young boy. When I get back to the UK I always have a trip down there.

Likewise at Milton Keynes Central - when it runs this train storms through northbound at around 21.30. It can be heard a full minute before it passes. It was common to see it triple headed with a mix of class 20`s & 37`s, I suppose nowadays its hauled by more modern power units!!!
Marcus Nixon I remember Boco, but I don’t remember what episode Boco appeared on. But his particular train on here was featured on a Thomas and friends like once or twice. Same exact color, look, everything.

officialmcdeath ok I see the difference now. Thank you very much! If I may ask why do these classes look so similar in shape? I’ve noticed the class 46 diesels also look kinda similar to this too
Those flasks weight 50 tons, as there so well made, carry 2.5 tons of waste, under regular transportation there's no way they could be of any harm, l am a coded welder l used to weld them up.
@@RailinKent So long as the Track Gauge is maintained, the train will be fine. Most accidents happen when the sleepers are rotten and the track can spread under the train.
Every working day one travels west up the tyne valley line early in the afternoon. Sometimes only one flask sometimes two. On their way to be reprocessed at sellafield. Not often pulled by these old girls anymore sadly
Bear in mind, they've got to look as ordinary as possible. It puts people's minds at rest to see 'just another diesel' driving by, rather than some chrome-plated monstrosity with 'Warning - Nuclear Waste' plastered on it.
Should be noted the wagons only carry low level nuclear waste like hazmat suits and gloves - it isn't carrying uranium rods! Edit: I think they do carry the spent rods, I'm no expert on this subject!
Rail in Kent any idea how heavy a fully loaded reactor is? Uranium is insainly heavy plus al the lead shielding... A train would be way better suited for something like that. Ships even better.
LightingDesk shouldn’t be too scary, there’s no chance of the wagons breaking open. There has never been any incidents in the 40 years that this train has run, so that speaks volumes about how safe it is!
I don't think it is, but people still work there and the trains still need to take their low-level nuclear waste (gloves, hazmat suits etc.) to be disposed of.
It branches off the mainline at Appledore, so if you follow the main road from there to Dungeness you will cross it, but there are a few quieter roads you can see it at.
From my understanding it is because of the safety regulations not a need for the power. If they only had one loco and it fails it would leave nuclear waste stuck somewhere on the network so the second loco is purely for back up should the first one fail.
As a train driver, I can tell you that the loco is showing the correct frontal lights as it has it’s marker lights and daytime headlight illuminated. During the hours of darkness, the headlight on the other side would instead be illuminated. This is so if you are stopped at a signal, the nighttime headlight would light up the signal identification plate. I believe that newer trains may have both headlights on at all times, but am happy to be corrected on that point. As for the condition of the track, it would be in line with the permissible speed. A low speed branch line will not be to the same tolerances as a high speed mainline. Love the armchair expert comment. Very funny!🤣👍
No. First, it's not weapons, it's fuel. Second, those casks are extremely tough and hard to crack. This is an old test, but... ruclips.net/video/2jzugX2NMnk/видео.html
Rail in Kent are you seriously saying our roads are better?! Lol they wouldnt spend all that money on moving suits and gloves by rail and then send the far more dangerous rods by road. I know this country is upside down and inside out but thats just silly and totally ilogical. Great vid though 😀
State of the nation, infrastructure in tatters as we comply with euro commie demands.....Transporting highly radioactive spent fuel on tracks that look like they belong in sub-saharan africa. Overgrown and barely usable above a walking pace..... Class 37s look and sound fantastic though, great examples of British engineering. I’d feel better if they were traveling a bit quicker though. Used to listen to them at night moving coal from the Durham coast mines to Sunderland docks when I was a kid. I still love that sound. Highlight for me though was the once daily Intercity at 8-45pm using the Durham coastal track. Tracks were repaired properly then, and we weren’t relying on Norway for fuel for power stations. We should be on the streets protesting.....Bread and games people, or more accurately beer and television.

Spread a few tons of ballast and put a tamper over it , it's not a hs line anyway.

Crumbs he really does turn her round when he passes through Appledore don’t he!
Venerable old 37’s most definitely my favourite diesel
I think I recall seeing the waste train go through Chislehurst and Elmstead Woods during the1980’s when I took the train to/from school....

Sinister. Reference similar train featuring in BBC miniseries Edge of Darkness (1985). Its funeral-procession pace gives me the creeps.
The big advantage for the train driver is the overtime pay.
That line needs some TLC. I remember when it was a passenger line . . . .
This used to pass behind my house in London some years ago
Looks like they could do with running the Plasser down that stretch of track.
Hardly worth it for one train a week.
Those rails are nicely bent and buggered!
Telephoto lens, heat distortion etc. Not bent rails.
I can assure you they are not in the best of condition!
_Perfect_ for transporting nuclear waste

Or London Burning episode 👍
I have to say that the branch line reminds me of something out of Rowland Emmett!
Two 37's and two flasks. Must go like a rocket. I guess breakdown isn't an option.
How much does a flask weigh?

Is that a Geiger counter clicking in the background?
Adam T No, it’s the 37
I've been in 069! But I was 3 so I can't quite remember much though I'll tell you that it sure was noisy
I am guessing the front flask is full and the second one empty as the second one doesnt have a radioactive danger sign?
Very interesting. Have a nice day now.
That’s a huge security risk to go so slow on buggered tracks. Allows boarding by anyone intent on it. Needs upgraded or repaired.
I doubt anyone can board a moving train at 10mph. This train has run for 40 years if they wanted to do that, they’d have done it by now.

At 2:32 the loco fights it's way through the bushes.
Humans look so small and squishy in comparison.
I don't suppose you have anything of Chatham Dockyard? I was in Nuclear Towers for a while. I watched HMS Courageous' reactor being shipped out.
I think I'm a bit too young to know anything about that!
Cool video nice suprise
How many axles are on each car?
How heavy are the flasks if 2 37s are required for 2 flasks
Liam's layout no, it’s in case one of them breaks down, there is another to keep it moving. High sensitivity of the load means it needs to keep going.
They weigh 50 ton each empty, carry upto 2.5 ton of waste, the 37s weigh around 100 ton each.
