Melon growing and harvest, on the ground or up a string

  • Two ways to grow these, on the ground or up a string. They are warmth loving and grow best under cover in our temperate oceanic climate. UK is officially zone 8 but we have cool summers, average afternoons 21C 70F.
I show you Early Moonbeam watermelon and Minnesota Midget melon, both from home saved seed. Growing in same bed as watermelon last year. Seed was saved from plants with no other cucurbits nearby.
In the polytunnel we see Tiger Melon, Early Granite and Kasakh, from Real Seeds, plants from Stephanie Hafferty.
I show indications for judging ripeness.
Tasting notes - sweetest was the watermelon! Lovely flavour too, closely followed by Kasakh, is fruity while the Tiger melon has great melon flavour and dense texture but is less sweet, maybe not fully ripe or needs more heat than here.
All grown no dig with no feeds. Compost mulch feeds soil life which feeds roots.
Filmed Homeacres 19th August by Nicola Smith. On iPhone.

Ah that’s great to see other melons capable for temperate climes, though hot here in Comptche, the summer is short due to mountains. I’ve got Crane melons, developed within 100 miles of here in Santa Rosa, and like you, Minnesota Midget, they grow outside in an intensive bed like I learned from you! I’m starting to see a reduction in bindweed due to repeated cardboard applied, and everything planted this way has managed well with low watering even during heat waves. Thank you Charles Dowding, I’ve learned so much and succeeded with lots of produce.

This is a bittersweet vlog for me Charles, I live in a similar climate (PNW of the USA) and don't have a greenhouse or polytunnel, so melons are difficult but I still try to grow them occasionally, anyway, I had a "hill" of 2 vines growing beautifully and setting fruit, then I noticed something wrong a couple of days ago, it turns out that a field mouse had managed to decapitate every arm of the 2 vines that I was growing. Oh well, maybe next year! A Gardener is an optimist by nature.

Wait till the tendril closest to the stream is totally dried. Not just starting to dry. Once you see it’s drying out check it daily and once totally dried it will be perfectly ripe.

Thanks Charles. I loved seeing the many varieties. I tried both watermelons and cantaloupe this year with good results. Soooooo refreshing. Our summer has been extremely hot so that may have helped our melons grow outdoors. A friend gave me plants for a white watermelon, "White Sugar", and a small green with red flesh. Both were so sweet and juicy. How fun to share plants with someone else to add variety to our gardens. Next year we will need to share more plants around.

2 years ago I had good success with the 'Alvaro' variety of Cantelope melon. Grown in London, UK.
This year I have sown them again and plan to grow them in 30L containers and in my raised bed. I shall grow them vertically using tomato cages because I have a tiny garden. In my containers I will only allow 2-3 fruits per pot before pinching off the main stem. I'm pretty much a beginner so don't know how well this will work.
    Thanks for your video.

Melons and watermelons are my summertime favorites. The five of us have been enjoying a massive melon (Crenshaw) for days now. We live in California, where melons go bonkers in the heat. We’ve also been enjoying our Ali Baba watermelons. So delicious!
    Here’s a song I learned as a kid
You can plant a watermelon right above my grave
    And let the juice
    Run through
You can plant a watermelon right above my grave
That’s all I ask of you
Well, chicken and dumplins taste mighty fine
But there’s nothing in the world like a watermelon vine
You can plant a watermelon right about my grave
    And let the juice
    Run through
    😆

    • @siOu666
      @siOu666 4 года назад +3

It's definitely possible if you can provide some shelter (polytunnel or the like). I'm doing long season cantaloupes (110 days) and watermelons (orangeglo, sweet Siberian, sugar lump, crimson sweet, astrakhanski) and I'm expecting the first ripe fruits within the next two weeks. Location is close to Hamburg. And that's although we had a lot of problems with bad soil (mere sand, German Heide) and fertilization. Also, I didn't graft because of time issues and some plants did suffer from Fusarium wilt. It's advisable to graft melons if you're growing heirloom varieties.

I did build an 8ft trellis for beans, but as I had lots i just put the potatoes in. The plants got strung to it as reached 7ft tall. Once dug up I had 1 potatoe at 1.2kg and many at 0.5kg. This proved effective now for the 3rd year. I thing the ground gets so full of of energy the plants go nuts.

Another great informative video for us newbies, I just wish they were longer! I could listen to him for hours. On another note, can't seem to find a copy of his 'How to Grow Winter Veg' book 😔

    Hi Charles,
It's interesting hearing the names of your melons in the UK. In Oz we have a melon similar skin pattern to the middle one in your poly tunnel which has orange yellow flesh and it's generically a rock melon, the last one which had the green flesh it's generically a honey dew melon. There would be a range within varieties within each of those.
We also have a range of watermelons with flesh ranging from yellow through to the strawberry red as well as interesting skin colors and patterns.
I'm in a sub tropical climate in SE Queensland, hot zone 5, cold 9b, and they harvest from about November, and go wild.
But there are things I cannot grow, like Brussels sprouts, parsnips are variable.
    Regards Dennis.

Oh yum! A big road-side stand near me sells the small yellow watermelon along with regular types but the yellow has outrageous yummy flavor compared to the reds 😋

I love watermelons and 'melons du Quercy' (Charentais variety as you mentioned) which are pure deliciousness here in France, as you might know. But wow, your harvest there looked amazing. You truly are a pioneer Charles. Always growing, experimenting, such an inspiration. :-)

I have a couple of different varieties that I plan on trying to grow trellised against a West facing wall next year. They are really small fruiting, so are advertised as not taking long to mature. It may not work, but even one coming ripe would be a successful seed save for the next year 🙂

Hi Charles, love this video but it would be brilliant if you could provide a more detailed 'how to grow melons' video. I'm attempting melon for the first time this season but detailed advise for British growers is limited on RUclips. Thank you 🍈

Charles I grew Tiger Melons for the first time last year and found them to be one of the most fragrant melons I have experienced, to the point that if you left them in the kitchen, it would very quickly have that heady scent of ripe melon. My Tiger melons were, white fleshed, quite firm, medium sweet and with a bright orange and white (not black) striped smooth skin so perhaps they are a different variety. I understand that Tiger melons are ripe when the stem starts to come away from the fruit. In anycase I support them with nets and harvest them when they detach from the plant. Anyway I grew Ogen melons alongside them last year and collected the seed. This year the "Tiger" melon turned out to be a cross between the Ogen and the origional Tiger melon with the best characteristics of both. Seems to be productive with 5/6 melons per plant. The melons are very fragrent, white fleshed, soft, very sweet and have the "net" and segmented skin of the Ogen. I'm hoping I will get these characteristics again next year.
