Using USBasp V2 to update the firmware of the ATS-20 and ATS-20+

- This method can be useful when the regular approach does not work.
There are many reasons why the traditional method of updating is not working on this device, including a USB interface problem on the Arduino board.
ATTENTION: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH ARDUINO PLATFORM, PLEASE, DO NOT TRY IT. IT CAN MAKE YOUR DEVICE STOP WORKING.
Look for USBasp on eBay, AliExpress, Amazon etc.

Many thanks for this video. I have a ATS 20, ATS 25 and a ATS100 but problem I have is I don't have a computer, tablet but just a phone. So none of my Radios have been updated. I wouldn't be confident in attempting any upgrade as not computer experienced. Cheers from old George
Maybe locate an Arduino-savvy neighbor? Just a thought, as i am sure many would be happy to help, if you wished.
A lot of those were shipped with Arduino boards that had bad USB ports. They will work over USB if you replace the bad board.

Good video and really useful info Ricardo. I was initially confused on how USBasp connected device shows up in PC/Mac. Turns out it does not show up as a port. Upload should happen via Upload via programmer option in Arduino IDE.
Hello, good tutorial, I have a question, I have not yet updated the firmware to the radio but in case I do, if at the time of loading the software the power goes out or something happens and the radio does not turn on afterwards, as shown. do you proceed to recover it?

At 6:00 in we can't see what you are selecting at the top of the screen and I have no idea what you did there since my version of the Arduino has not such thing as "minicore" so I selected Nano.

Qual a vantagem do firmware 3.07 em relação ao 1.5? É o uso do encoder para mais funções?
Não sei responder a sua pergunta porque não tenho experiência com USBASP. Simplesmente comprei dois destes mostrados no vídeo. Os dois funcionaram muito bem.
Não consigo atualizar o ATS 20+ via USB. Onde conseguir este tipo de conexão para atualização?
I have an ATS-20+ that wont program via regular way. I bought the USBasp, but Arduino IDE wont recognize it following these instructions. Any advice?
On Tools Menu, go to "Programmer" and select USBasp; Then, go to Sketch manu and select "Upload using Programmer".

Ricardo, boa tarde! meu querido, hoje eu recebi um arduino nano que eu comprei pelo mercado livre, e nele percebi uma diferença que o outro que vem no ATS 20+ não vem. ao remover o arduino nano do ATS 20 + pra colocar o que recebi, eu percebi que o que vem nele não tem o cristal oscilador que fica proximo ao CH340, que fica em baixo do arduino nano. coloquei um cristal de uma plaquinha aleatória que eu tinha nas minhas coisas, e ao testar no computador, imediatamente reconheceu o arduino nano. resumindo, talvez o vendedor tira o cristal pra ninguém programar da forma correta pelo USB.
Eu não havia observado esta diferença. Vou verificar o meu assim que puder. O que você relatou pode fazer sentido.
@@pu2clrpassando só pra avisar que o ATS do meu amigo chegou hoje pela manhã, e tinha o mesmo problema que o meu. removi o arduino dele, e colocamos um oscilador, e agora está 100%.

Ricardo, my USBAsp was recognized once, but the IDE would not recognize it nor a port for it. Perhaps there is something wrong with the programmer. Or possibly, a problem with the driver install under Win10-64bit. Really frustrating, these radios are pretty fun to play around with, but their update should not be this difficult. I think I'm going to follow the suggestion of another owner, and modify a USB-A to USB-mini cable so the ATS-20+ isn't conflicted with 5V from the Windows machine and the 3.3V supplied to the NANO (this is definitely a problem). Otherwise I'm stuck. However, nice tutorial... KUDOS and 73, W7STF
I will check it on Windows 10. Did you followed the steps and Arduino setup?
@@pu2clr Yes. Win10-64bit. I followed your steps exactly, and was unsuccessful. I'm thinking that upgrading the ATS-20+ might be a major problem if the OS on the computer is Win10. And I do think the collision of 5V and 3.3V just will not work. Hence the need to either cut the 5V supply from the computer, or jump through entirely too many hoops to use a USBasp programmer.
I checked it on Windows 7. I needed to install the USBasp driver. It worked fine. Please, for Windows 10 check this guide: www.instructables.com/USBASP-Installation-in-Windows-10/
Oi Ricardo, boa tarde! eu comprei um ATS 20 Plus, e ao conectar no computador, ele não dá nenhum sinal. porém o radio está funcionando 100% e está na primeira firmware. Será que com o USBasp eu consigo programar ele? porquê pelo USB não está dando, e não é drivers, porque quando eu conecta cabo ele não dá nenhum sinal de vida no computador.
Sim... a ideia deste vídeo é mostrar como atualizar o firmware nesta condição. Contudo, recomendo cuidado ao executar os procedimentos.
@@pu2clr então, eu já tinha usado o USBasp antes, só não entendi o porquê desse arduino do ATS 20 Plus, veio com essa avaria. então posso atualizar tranquilo, que ele vai!? porquê ele é tão novo que dá dó de abrir só pra fazer isso...

@@pu2clrOi Ricardo! consegui passar perfeitamente pelo USBasp, realmente o arduino veio com defeito, talvez no próprio CH340 que vem nele. mas eu consegui passar o firmware pelo USBasp perfeitamente.
@@ErivandoNascimento nenhum ats20+ que peguei consegui fazer upload de firmware pela via normal. Somente via USBasp.
Took 3 days to update it with 341A programmer, turned out to be simple in the end 😂
Please witch Arduino version ? 1.8.12 or other ?
It will work on any Arduino Version. Go to tools menu and select the right Programmer device/method; so, go to Sketch menu and select Upload using Programmer.

Ricardo - I have an ATS-20 and used USB to take the firmware to v3.0.4 - is there a further update or another branch I should use? I replaced the encoder as the cheap one failed. The new one is much nicer. I think that makes my ATS-20 an ATS-20+ lol!
