Tip number one: Unless you are cutting timber to saw into lumber, there is no reason to cut close to the ground. Cut at waist height where it is lots easier, to hold the saw. And to drop the saw and runaway if things get weird. You can come back and trim a high stump, with far less risk of accident, and injury.

I've dealt with vegetation that started it's life as hedgerow and, or shelter to farmland (i.e. it's original intended purpose was never to become full scale lumber). But guess what, just add thirty to forty years to almost any species and see what you end up with then. Yes, the requirement for hedgerow or shelter still remains after all that time. So I've done these higher cuts on legitimate lumber wood a good bit. And it presents it's own challenges. But it means the landowner can choose to leave the high stump, grow back again, or replace the high stump with it's removal (and even then I've seen high stumps removed and replanted elsewhere). Those growing high stumps if you have suffient quantity can become the raw material to use to establish and entire new hedgerow. And I'm positive that in days of old, that is how people managed years ago. They re-cycled high stumps and re-used them again.
