  • This is one of my typical spinning tops, with a recessed tip and a long stem. I made a decorative ring for it with some high quality glow in the dark powder, (phosphorescent). The ring makes a green light in the darkness.
I used palm wood for the top. This is a very decorative wood, I think it's very nice for little objects like tops.
The wood is not very easy to work with, because the dark parts are hard, while the clear part is soft. I made an ergal armature inside the top, for making the stem stronger.
The top can spin for up to half an hour or a bit more, with one single twirl of the fingers, or, up to almost 40 minutes when started by more twirls.
The diameter of the top is 53 mm, weight 194 grams.
It uses replaceable tips, (hss and carbide, conical shape).
This set includes a tool for resharpening the tips and a tool for restoring the spinning surface when it is too weared out/scratched because of usage.
The balance of the top can be adjusted, if needed, so that the top can always spin like a new one, without any wobbling.

As always Iacopo....beautiful and ethereal! Beautiful tops deserve a beautiful presentation, and you excel at both.

Thanks, Daryl. I studied a bit of photography at the Fine Arts Academy, and, even without many means, and in spite of having little free time, I try to make well made videos.
From time to time I learn new things which help me to improve a bit. Recently, thanks to Ta0, (ITopSpin forum), I pointed my attention to Chroma Key, I will experiment with it and if it works well I will use it for my future videos. Even for tops I am experimenting with some new materials and some changes in the details of my design.

What a beautiful spinning top! I am really impressed that you have managed to sell some of your tops considering the level of maintenance they need to keep their high performance level. I aspire to make tops with a quality high enough for me to sell happily. So far, all my tops have enough small defects to prevent me from selling them (like small dents in the wood etc). I suppose that is one of the challenges of making tops as beautiful as yours!

Hi. Thank you, James. Look at the bright side; these tops have the possibility to be maintained, (the other tops on the market usually don't), which means that even when they will be old, or, in case of dented/chipped tip, these tops can be restored and they will spin again like new ones, perfectly balanced and with very long spinning times.
I provide the means and detailed instructions for to do this. This is an added value to the product.
Certainly the restoration of the contact points and balancing the top take time and also some manual skills are required, so these tops are not for everybody.
When someone wants one of my tops without being very willing to afford the periodical restorations, I propose him a low maintenance spinning top:
there are some tricks for to make a low maintenance top. You can make a top with a large, flat flywheel, and an external tip, (like my Nr. 29); this shape has a natural resistance to wobbling, so that, even with weared contact points, the top will spin smoothly and without wobbling. Another trick is to use replaceable ball tips instead of conical tips; when the ball tip is weared/ruined, it will be simply replaced, which is much easier than resharpening a conical tip and to balance the top again. Especially the teflon balls on oiled glass are good in this sense, because they are forgiving for a less than perfect balance, and the top will spin very smoothly in any case, and apparently better balanced than with balls of other materials. If you use a glass mirror as for spinning surface, when the mirror will be old and full of scratches, you can simply throw it away and buy a new one, instead of having to restore it, like it happens with the dedicated bases with a carbide spinning surface. So, there are various solutions for the persons who want a hand crafted precision spinning top but with a low maintenance.
I believe that the quality of the finishings of every little detail contribute in an important way to the beauty and quality of the top itself. Apparently the little defects may seem unimportant, but, even if they aren't noticeable, you "feel" them, and they give you the sensation of incomplete satisfaction.
I believe that you are a talented person, with growing manual skills, and that, if you want, you will be able to make tops with the same quality of the mine.
It takes time and effort, anyway. Concentrate on things you don't like in your tops and think how you can improve and work out the kinks, one by one.
Usually I write about these things in a notebook, this helps me to keep focused on the kinks and possible solutions.
For little imperfections, scratches, and things like this, I find very useful to use a headband magnifier. I use the Optivisor, its lenses are made of real glass, not plastic, and the quality is very good; it was much more expensive when I bought it, but now it's only £ 10.99 on Ebay.co.uk. I would suggest you to buy them:
