Steve Kornacki: Changing Demographics In Atlanta Area Helped Warnock's Campaign

- Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock defeated Republican football star Herschel Walker on Tuesday in Georgia’s Senate runoff election, NBC News projects, handing President Joe Biden and his party a key win. Warnock’s victory will give Democrats an outright majority in the Senate after two years under a 50-50 divide, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting tie-breaking votes. Steve Kornacki discusses Warnock's win.

The most depressing part of this is that you can make a complete mockery of campaign and present yourself as completely unsuitable for the job and still get basically almost half of the votes.
That's what Fetterman did, only he got more than 1/2 the vote. Remember?
@@federalistpapers4523 Yeah, you are right. Fetterman had no right to win. It is just that what I remember is Fetterman's opponent being out of state creep.

The fact that the Republicans can field such a complete stooge of a candidate and still need a runoff to decide it points to how tribal our two party system is. Pretty sad, actually. Glad Warnock won, though.
Well, these folks did give us the insufferable MTG. That says something about the voters there too.

It’s still scary that walker had so many votes.
All of you who voted for Warnock should be embarrassed and ashamed of yourselves. The same party who brought everyone inflation, illegal immigration, the list goes on. That's because you are not aware of racism in American politics. Georgia has been a reliably red state. white rural voters will only vote for a Republican candidate. It doesn't matter how bad the candidate is, they're not voting Democrats. Black urban voters tend to vote democratic. What has changed is the demographics as explained by Chris.
Well done, but this beggars belief. Who listened to Herschel speak and then went " Yep! that's my guy"? Crazy!
My co-workers voted for him because they went to school together. When I mentioned his inability to show fitness for the job, they said , "Well, I don't know about all that, but he's still a good guy."

@Sal
The ONLY reason Trump didn't get blown out by Hillary (he still lost general vote) was that the Bernie bros and many other democrats sat out of the 2016 election.
It's not "vote blue no matter who" It's "vote blue or sit out", there's a difference.
If you don't vote blue, then you are a sub-human bigot.
Nearly 400k Republican voters stayed home yesterday. I'm thankful to them for deciding to use their vote to say, "Do better GQP" 🙏🏽 Those silent votes matter and sends a message. As much as I want to see the GQP die in a blaze of fire, I want to see a real legitimate political rivalry that drives the country to a better place. It's amazing that even one person would vote for Walker.
Mind-blowing indeed!
Not so amazing that he'd vote for himself. It's the second vote that is amazing.
It shouldn't be amazing.

IS IT REALLY WHEN YOU HAVE MILLIONS OF MAGAS IN THE COUNTRY?
Congratulations from North Carolina! Georgia saved the country AGAIN
@Alex Jones Former Disgraced twice impeached 1 term president Trump literally called for the termination of the constitution and restore him as president. So Biden and the democrats are very very far from being "communist". Trump and his maga ally morons are the ones who wants to turn this country into a dictatorship. But I don't see you criticizing them.
@alexjones9779 Give me one example of what the Democrats have done or proposed that is "communism?" You mean caring about people, investing in our infrastructure, boosting manufacturing, standing for voting rights, supporting programs to mitigate climate change, or what?
Amen!!!! Go my home state. Iam so proud of you!! Jaden is absolutely right! You saved the nation. Hats off to Stacey Abrams who taught Georgia how to win. Although, she is too much of a lady,so intelligent and politically astute that, she will not state why she never conceeded her first election. She didn't concede because she knew that the office of Governor of Georgia had been craft fully stolen from her. She knew that their were slickster, trickster individuals who through many Republican legal appearing schemes orchestrated what appeared to be her defeat. For her to make such a charge without "beyond a shadow of a doubt" evidence may have ruined her political future. But she knew the numbers and the facts enough to know that the results did not compute. Kemp and his partners in crime had committed an almost perfect voting crime. Therefore Stacey maintained her dignity and preserved her political future., We still have not heard the last of Stacey Abrams of Georgia. Georgia Voters and Reverend Warnock owe Stacey for saving Georgia and the Nation by laying the foundation for victory in Georgia
As a registered Republican, it still boggles my mind that the Georgia GOP considered Herschel Walker as their best hope. Independent voters must have felt the same way.
I'm not from GA and vote independently (very left leaning), but watched this obviously. Take the party indicator away and base it on the 2 men speaking alone, it made me kind of sick that it was this close twice! People would rather be represented by someone clearly not up for the job mentally than cross a party line. I often point to these types of things as why we as a whole can never get anything fully accomplished here in the US. (veteran support, banking laws, homeless crisis, etc.) I wish they'd get rid of both parties honestly. Character means nothing on both sides and claims of morality are bold faced lies.
@@sknkwrksowner so John fetterman and joe Biden aren’t mentally ill?

I'm absolutely embarrassed for Georgia that the race was that close
It's pathetic, but... baby steps. Republicans are largely going to vote Republican, regardless of how incompetent and unethical the candidate. But, now that we're seeing Republicans lose in some major races in Georgia, which was not a thing 10 years ago, I'll take that narrow victory.
Don't forget that intense voter suppression is a major hurdle to voters in the urban minority communities. This is one way the state political power base, the "machine" maintains it's power. It's part of "the southern strategy. These southern Republicans are Dixiecrats.

All those areas have experienced demographic changes just like Metro Atlanta. All those blue areas in Georgia have helped Warnock win re-election.

@@luannhetrick-wood9764 , Scaring us, and thereby getting us to watch the least informative, most pointless show/hosts on MSNBC (Joe and Mika), is the sole function of Steve Kornacki's maps and constant hand gyrations. I can only tolerate Korrnacki if I close my eyes and listen, and even then it's difficult. The election results are really pretty simple to explain. Even in Georgia, a state where stupid runs deep and wide, there are more sensible people then illogical people, and this time the sensible people showed up to vote, and were able to make their votes count and their voices heard despite concerted efforts by the state of Georgia to marginalize people who were likely to vote for Democrats. Besides which, county by county election reporting might make some sense for elections involving representatives to Congress, but not senators, because senators are elected statewide and thankfully not limited to the voters of any one county.

Feels like our political system has become a contest between a party with 60% of the voters and 30% turnout vs a party with 30% of the voters and 60% turnout.
I totally agree. Democrats should not rest on this win and instead should focus on why their voters failed to show up in the general election.
GA like AZ (and a few other states) are trending away from Republicans in the fact that Democratic constituencies are large and growing however those voters are still not showing up. It has been a nationwide problem for some time and Democrats still believe that not embracing change and updating their image of who their actual constituents are is going to continue to cost them. It’s why they’ve lost since the ‘90s. 2016 was the best example of Democrats losing not Republicans winning. Almost the opposite of this most recent election.
@@BlackDoveNYC mostly it’s cuz we can’t get off work to vote…. Specifically if we are on urban areas or southern states. Or they’ll fire us
@@BlackDoveNYC If you had to stand in line for several hours to vote, you might not be as interested either.
@@BlackDoveNYC I think more Dems will come out and vote in midterms as the years go by. For decades, Dems thought midterms didn't matter. But that mindset has changed over the years, hence Dems taking back control of the HOR and Senate in 2018, retaining the Senate in 2022, and only losing less than 8/9 seats in the HOR. Dems are waking up. This is why Republicans will get worse with gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc. When Dems turn out, Republicans lose. It's going to be interesting to see how 2024 works out. Dems might take back the House but may lose Senate seats. Only time will tell. However, no one expected Biden to have the Senate for all four years of his term and a slim loss of the HOR.
I think it’s more that moderate voter that shifts the election. I’m a very moderate democrat and honestly I voted for Stacey Abrams and Warnock but everything else I voted red. I didn’t see any reason to chance anything in the state politics (other than my despise of Brian Kemp) but Secretary of State etc all did their jobs during their terms and I’m happy with them.

Walker, Texas Werewolf Hunter
Loves Steve kernacky! I always look forward to his analysis, hes the best!
How Walker still got all those votes is beyond me.
I have been voting since 1974. I had to go to my old junior high school and stand in a voting line, but it was inside going down the hallway. But as I got older the places I voted in didn't have long lines, either because the system was efficient or there weren't that many voters. By the late 1990s I lived where they used paper ballots and you insert them in to lock box scanners. That kind of system allows an unlimited number of simultaneous voters, unlike voting machines where voters have to queue up, so there was never a line or wasted time. Then we moved to Colorado where we get our ballots in the mail and leisurely fill them out on the dining room table, making it super easy. Mail in ballots also give you the time to research the amendments that employ deceptive wording so you don't vote the wrong way. When there are long lines at voting machines you can't do that because you rush out of courtesy to all the people behind you.
But when it comes to voting, Georgia is still using archaic systems from the 1960s. They force people to stand in unnecessary long lines outside in hot Summer and cold Winter. That punishment pushes away the casual voters so only the motivated show up. Even Georgia's early voting imposes long lines. In that archaic situation the last thing you want is for your voters to wait until election day to stand in the longest lines possible, maybe in bad weather. But that is the current Trump and Republican voting strategy!
My hypothesis about why Georgia uses voting systems that make voters stand in long lines is that they have become accustomed to massive Atlanta traffic jams so they think that is the way everything is supposed to be.
$50 says that Walker will say that he won because most of the map is red not blue. He won't understand that its numbers not pretty colours.
There are some fools (apparently from the more rural counties) who are moaning about how "unfair" it is that the larger-largest counties control who is ultimately elected! Same stupid complaint against NY & CA!
I'd like to thank the repubs for running Walker and guaranteeing a Dem victory.
Now Herschel Walker can be the speaker of the House!
Thanks Georgia!!!!!
Good job GA 👏🏽👏🏽
What does it show about GA that Warnock’s margin is so small?
It shows that GA is a battleground state now, which is progress over what has happened here in the past. 10 years ago, Walker wins this race handily. Continued growth in Atlanta can continue to tip the balance further towards the Democrats.
