I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was shot in 1995. I shot the footage - this is the short version. Later I will be putting on a night time version of going to Chicago and coming back. The night time engine light moving around is pretty cool.

The long version will probably be in September. The main difference is you'll be able to see engineer Jim at the throttle. Also four engineers around a table playing cards waiting for thier trains.

That's what I've heard that after 9/11 , that it's harder to get in. I am the son of a railroad engineer and a professional videographer. My dad would not let me have a tripod in there.
Also thank you for giving it 5 stars.

I love at 4:12 where he racks that bad boy out! Just coming out of that speed restricted curve there ;) My favorite part of this whole run You hit 80 real quick and wait to grab the air to just a bit before the Wabash bridge with a 9 car and it sets down real nice.

@Larry R Wendell This is the Metra Rock. We run from LaSalle to Joliet and the old Beverly Sub. Metra also runs the former Milwaukee Road commuter lines and the former IC electric along with the former Wabash/NW.BNSF and UP run their own with our cars and name. I wish we went all the way to Rantoul, but thats Amtrak.

@IrishEddieOHara Irish Eddie my dad was Irish too. As for at 1:22 all I can tell you is that people who ride these rails at this exact point know it to be a rough, rickety bouncy point.

I'm currently working on a video showing my dad as the engineer and moving the levers. I have 2 more trips to post they'll be up sometime in September.

@MetraCNW71794 Thank you but this version is so close to being unedited it's not funny. I'll look at the footage again. Maybe I can come up with something like "the Lost tapes" even though I know where they are.

I Just know that there are two windows in the front that I shot out of. Now that I look at the footage it seems that I shot about 70 % out of the left window and 30 % out of the right window. The engineer is on the right hand side.

@Metracab123 I got in only because my dad is the engineer. Oh and it was before 9/11 .

@pilotmanmax I don't know that much about the different sounds even with being the son of an engineer.

I use to live in New Lenox Illinois in 2006 and I remember going to that Mc.Donald's and other places on Rt.30. Also there is an former NYC Michigan Central line which is an bike trail that starts near an park and goes on two preserved bridges one over I80 and the other over the former Wabash NS line as it heads to the other near by towns. For me to get to that part of town I had to cross the EJ&E tracks with my bikecycle and I was always careful if I heard the EJ&E train blowing it's horn in the distance I would wait for it to go by.

The property is in better shape than when the rock island had it, but the rock made deferred maintaince a way of life. Had the rock kept up on maintaince and the merger with the union pacific went through the rock would still be here today.

Great Video! How far in Illinois, does Metra travel? I have friends who live in Rantoul, IL, and I know you come through there, but to cover the entire state of Illinois, N/S and E/W?

@ adugodse, I have asked several train crew members that same question and I have gotten numerous answers ranging from station alignment to trains have always ran southpaw on the Rock Island line. The later may be the best answer. However they have CTC and have ran right sided on occasions.
