- El Retablo de Maese Pedro (en français: Les Tréteaux de Maître Pierre; en anglais: Master Peter's Puppet Show) est un petit opéra en un acte pour orchestre de chambre (y compris un clavecin) et trois chanteurs, avec marionnettes et personnages réels. Inspiré d'un épisode du Don Quichotte de Miguel de Cervantes (chapitres XXV et XXVI de la seconde partie du livre) et réalisé à la demande de la princesse de Polignac, il fut tout d'abord présenté en version de concert à Séville le 23 mars 1923, puis pour la première fois à Paris le 25 juin suivant. Dans l'épisode en question, le chevalier Don Quichotte assiste à un spectacle de marionnettes dirigé par Maître Pierre, qui raconte l'histoire de Don Gaïferos parti sauver sa promise Mélisendre retenue captive par le roi maure Marsilio (lors de la scène finale opposant les maures à Don Gaïferos, Don Quichotte, croyant voir dans les marionnettes de véritables guerriers, se précipite sur le théâtre l'épée à la main et dévaste tout, au grand dam de Maître Pierre qui, pleurant sur son sort, ramasse les débris de son théâtre).

An outstanding performance of one of Falla's greatest compositions. Many composers including Poulenc thought it was Falla's masterpiece.

This is very nice to see as well as hear, and to have the luxury of humans instead of puppets. I've seen this three times staged, each time compromising some element of production, orchestral, vocal or scenic... Here all runs very smoothly, beautifully played, emphasising the neo-classic & Stravinskian influence at the expense of some earthy color. Master Peter sings well but i miss the boyish enthusiasm & naivety found on the Argenta recording which i grew up with. A gorgeous piece!

One of my all-time favorite classical works. Manuel de Falla's genius is nowehere better displayed than here. And Charles Dutoit has it completely under his skin, as he had in his old recording for Erato which I always much enjoyed (the soprano singing Trujaman having a rather sexy voice). The puppet show is marvelous too, I must really one day sit down and watch this instead of just listening. Many thanks for this priceless upload !

oh! wanted to see so much how Melisendra gets her dressed caught in the balcony as she tries to escape and is left hanging there until Gaiferos rescues her. You could have done it with the puppets! Never mind. Lovely adaptation. Great idea to switch from puppets to actors, showing how in Quijote's mind, there characters are "real".

Puppet show
Excelente versión. Es una de las obras musicales escénicas (por no llamarla ópera u opereta) menos representadas según algunas estadísticas. Conserva el humor cervantino, cosa difícil y poco lograda en las adaptaciones que se han hecho del Quijote.
