That last comment about removing the interface from the VM REALLY helped me so much. Thank you!
This should be linked from the truenas forum. I searched for days before I found your video. Thanks!
Yea I should probably see about getting it put on there haha see if we can help more people
@@Haydn-San thanks man for the fast and easy tutorial. I was reading through forums achieving nothing until I found your video! keep it up man!
This saved me two days of headaches. Thanks a lot.
Same here
This is actually a really well done tutorial. Steps are clear.
Thank you! you saved my day. It was quite annoying to find a straightforward tutorial about that.
it just worked, good tut, no fluff.
i think it was all down to removing the ip from the main nic, and giving it to the br0, read that someplace, didint understand what vague comment someone made, this flat out is what tehy ment, and you showed me how to get both the VM and host to talk it out.
you will be a citation in the web blog of setting up my NAS, and the pain i have had with it
yea i made this video due to the hours it took me to find a solution to this issue, i feel your pain xD
Legend! Quick, clear and concise instructions. Been looking for help with this. Thank you
Thanks mate for this video 👍 that nameserver thing fixed my problem of the nas not connecting to the internet.
Thanks a lot, a verry clear and nicely detailed tutorial that I really needed, keep up mate
This video saved me so much! Couldn't figure it out until I found this THANK YOU!! I copied all the settings in your global configuration and did the static routes with my own static IP. Thank you!
You, my friend, are God sent lol
The only thing I explicitly had to do differently was set up the gateway and nameserver after creating the bridge (something you already had in place) since I was originally using DHCP on the interface and not an explicit IP.
Anyways, you saved me from a headache I was having with this, so thank you!
Perfect! One well regarded RUclipsr said this was impossible in UI and had me poking around in the TrueNAS CLI with no success. Thanks for showing me the way. I was beginning to think TrueNAS had something against my old-ish motherboard's NIC.
I'll echo all of these comments - THANK YOU! This is exactly what I needed. I also needed the troubleshooting step at the tail end as I have a Windows 10 VM setup already. You are a true gentleman and scholar, I'm sure your office smells of books and rich mahogany.
This saved me after a couple of hours of troubleshooting. Proper good job on this clear tutorial!
wow! So cool! Thank You! Finally!!!
THANK YOU!!! This makes VMs on this platform worthwhile for me... finally.
Great guide! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It's helpful and easy to understand!
You just saved my bacon man. That last bit at the end of your tutorial is really important too, because I got stuck there and had to use a workaround where you set the test time to 0 seconds then reboot the host manually for the settings to stick. You still have to go in on each of your VMs and change the device in the NIC to the bridge however, so your advice is better.
This
Thanks a lot for this. I really appreciate you making this tutorial. Easy to follow and understand :)
Thank you!! Exactly what I was looking for.
This didn't work for me in the web GUI (i heard it was a bug for some) but it worked for me in the Truenas Scale console. Regardless thank you for pointing me in the right direction on how to setup a network bridge. Cheers mate!
Saved my bacon with ths instruction after changing HW. I at to remove bridge to get access to my GUI. Initially, I re-added my bridge and could access GUI again. But these instructions, it worked. Cheers! I had slight difference at end (22.12.2). After entering fixed IP in bridge, I clicked Test, relogged into GUI and at too press test again, then save.
This definitely helped more than you know! Thank you!
Perfect! Thank you
I have been looking for hours for a solution like yours
Thank you so much for the great video ^^
Perfect. Thank you
LOVE YOU! thanks! spent 1 hours trying to have vm mount NFS... well no guide on bridge.. stuck.. but you published this video you saved me today!
Thanks so much! This solved my issue.
Thank you very much. I have been struggling to get this working following so many posts on Truenas community forum where none of what I raad was successful.
Your clear presentation worked straight away.
If that is OK with you, I am putting this video's URL in some of the conversation on Truenas community forum.
Thanks again.
I'm glad it helped and sure that's no problem aslong as this vid helps people I don't mind
OMG!!!, Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! :D
Thank YOU !!! Super tutoral !!!!!
Wow man thanks a lot, had the problem when adding the bridge because of the vm's NIC settings. Went in vm setting, removed the nic interface and tried again to add the bridge. All works perfectly now.
THX!
Glad this helped! i was stuck with the same issue for days, it does not explain it anywhere haha
Thanks a lot!
Thanks its easy to understand
Helped me a lot. Thx
awesome tutorial brother helped out a ton
Cheers mate! TrueNAS really needs to step up their docs.
That was neat ! Thanks for demonstrate it. Now we can actually use vms and apps on it
Thank youuuuuu, my problem was with the VM NIC that needed to be removed.
Thanks...this save me
Thank you sooo much for this.. I am now pullling my hair out for hours literally.. I couldn't figure our why it kept running into revert after 60s.. THANKS!
Maaaan... the documentation for just the bridge is like plain egg on a plate lol. you saved me from rage quitting and turn a blind eye for not having the bridge for my vm lol
Wow man thanks ive ben on this problem for days thank you thank you
Thanks man
Thanks
Thanks for bringing up having to have a Nameserver in place under networks. I didn't have that and my whole apps catalog broke!
Does the bridge give you faster local speeds to and from your nas?
Would you be able to do a video on the "TrueNAS was unable to reach update servers" and "Only http proxies are supported: Automatic update check failed. Please check system network settings." errors when trying to update truenas?
awsome tutorial.could you shre some information why smb is slow on trunas scale and how to speed it up.thanks
when I have configured everything and I click on test changes, when you get: "Connecting to TrueNas... make sure that the TrueNas system is turned on and connected to the network" I don't get that, I load it and after a minute I get: waiting for active truenas controller to come up, and then I enter the administration but nothing has changed, I only get the bridge without working.
I have a router with DHCP, I would like to disable the DHCP option for this one as well as for the bridge
could this work between two different trunas systems to access my media from on to another with plex?
I don't think so as the bridge is mainly for a connection within the system, unless you have vm running 2 entry's if truenas
Thank you! This was very straightforward, but I appreciate the video confirming the steps. At six o' five you may want to blur out the auto suggested addresses. =)
3 days of tinkering with this almost thought it didn't work till the end. Turned off the vm and change the nic and then it let it stick. THANKS! 3 DAYS of trying to FIX THIS. THANKS
Super clear tutorial, thanks, subbed! Ive been having issues where after I create the bridge I can't connect to the TrueNAS web admin page. You mentioed setting Nameservers for this? Would appreciate a How To. Thanks!
Super well done. I'm thinking to virtualize Opnsense (open source router/firewall OS based on FreeBSD) under TrueNAS Scale, and I read that it needs a bridge to properly function... Would this work for me? Have you ever done what I want to do?
Thank you for the video. You mention your pterodactyl instance - are you running panel and wings in the same VM? I'm having an issue communicating between the two on a similar setup.
Yea I have both pterodactyl and wings on my vm, I remember having issues myself and my friend helped me out so ill drop him a message see if he has a idea for you
@@Haydn-San I appreciate it. Somehow game servers are installing and running, but the Nodes interface shows a failure to connect.
@@Haydn-San Any chance you can still lend a hand? I'm looking to try this again - still having the same issue
Hi there! Thank you for the tutorial. I can't pass the step where you link the interface to the bridg, after testing, truenas revert my changes (6:24 minutes in your video). What am I missing?
Do you have a vm with the network attached to it (NIC)
HAHAHA! After correcting the issue I saw that you explain exactly how to troubleshoot at the end. Perfect. Thanks
@@rodolphougolini no problem, glad you got it working
Thanks for the video, was wondering, have you been able to connect from a container to a virtual machine? I wanted to reverse proxy from my traefik container to my home-assistant-os VM but haven't been able to get it to work.
iv not, ill look into this see if theres anything i can find :)
@@Haydn-San actually I got it working with what you showed here, I had set my kube cluster to use the bridge too but all I needed to so was revert that.
is scale buggy? cause i can't set static ip
if im being honest i moved away from scale due to all the issues i was encountering and the lack of instruction, ill readd it back to my proxmox server and see if i get the same issue
how to setup static ip address in truenas scale
thanks for this.
Doesn't work for me on Dragonfish 24.04.02 When I go to remove the ethernet address (5:45) I get an error "'192.168.0.201" is being consumed by Applications, please use a different node IP in applications configuration."
But even if I shut down all the apps I get the same error. I'm also using a bond0 as my main IP address since that's how I got the system to work a bit faster (in theory.)
update: just saw a comment about needing to Unset the kub. setting 1st
Great explanation. i believe, that bridge is to connect 2 devices where a physical connection is not possible So my question here IS, which devices are bridged. what is the purpose of adding this in the VM. Would be great helpful. Because i am trying to understand it since weeks.
so for example, i had issues with next cloud on my scale so i set it up on a ubuntu server, i had a separate HDD i wanted to data to be saved to so i added a bridge for that connection so i could connect via smb
I am unable to remove the IP address from the original interface, it won't let me save it without one present.
same here did you find a solution?
@@dylanallen4806 same here, solution?
This is content worth give 5 Starts! Intro, info and closing. Thank you!!!!!!
I did same and while overall works fine, while the TrueNas system cannot update and have no access to internet for some reason
do you have name servers set? this can cause the updating issue
@@Haydn-San no name servers. Just clean setup
@Stanislav Trifan that will be your issue then, for some reason with no name servers it doesn't allow updates or connections to catalogs
Added nameservers and info related to static IP and doesn't work either
@@stanislavtrifan96 i had this and i fixed by switching to DHCP rather than static IP in the bridge
The main NIC won't let me remove the IP
I have the same problem, did you find a solution?
@@guillaumeseurynck3853 nope. I just bought a second IP address and used that.
@@guillaumeseurynck3853
TRUENAS SCALE:
Activate DHCP on the main NIC & save.
Click test changes & quickly find your new (DHCP served) ip adress and connect. Save network changes permanently. (think this is a 60 second window or so, so be quick)
Reboot Truenas.
Now you are able to remove your static IP from you main NIC & uncheck DHCP.
Pass your static IP to the bridge, attach your NIC & test changes.
Connect via the static ip you provided.
voila!
Same here, when trying to remove it says " is being consumed by Applications"
@@Drollitt Turn off applications. That allowed me to remove the IP from the main NIC.
do you have a paypal. you saved me a week of headache
Does nto work, If I remove the IP address from the Network interfec the save button just fades and nothing happens. I beleive this is becuase all my apps are bound to this IP address possibly... I had to go to my apps setting page > remove my app pool then unconfigure my network card and IP address form this page. then reboot and then and only then could i remove the IP address from the NIC and after all this none of my apps would connecto to the network now... boooo!!!
did you find a solution on this?
I just had the same issue (SCALE 23.10.2) after doing this process a year ago! I reckon something has changed in versions since this video was created. I got round this problem today by uploading my last management config file. As you said, it doesnt let you remove the static IP address due to being 'consumed by applications'. Interesting that removed the app pool to get around it. How did you resolve your apps after? Would be useful if you disable the Kubernetes 'apps service'.
Hey great video!
I have a question though. Can this bridging behave like a virtual switch which is there on qnap? There is a video where a guy bypasses the standard 1Gb router and hooks the qnap nas to a pc with a 2.5Gb adapter for 230MBps transfer rates. He used virtual switching inside qnap. Noob here, Just curious. Will be a great help if you look into it.

Don't worry. I am pretty good at being computer obliterate. I mean, uh, literate.
