DIY: Shibori with Indigo Dye

- A little different than tie dye, Shibori is a Japanese method of dyeing patterns by twisting, binding, wrapping, folding, stitching. The main dye used for this technique is Indigo because of its easy to create resist patterns on fabric. Jacquard products make it simple to create this ancient natural dye using their Indigo kit here: www.jacquardpr...
The Indigo kit has all the supplies you’ll need for a successful dye session and it has enough dye you can create plenty of designs.

You’ll also need natural fabrics. For this I used Organic Cotton Plus’s white Sateen and muslin fabric. To date this is my favorite in the way it takes the dye. It really makes a difference in the shade of the indigo dye when using 100% natural fabrics. It was much more vibrant and the resist portions were more bold.
In this video I’m sharing different stitch resist patterns called Nui Shibori. A simple running stitch is used on the cloth then pulled tight to gather the cloth. The thread must be pulled very tight and secured by knotting before being dyed.

great video...opening them must be exciting..do you do any rinsing or setting of the dye ?
Hi! It's my favorite part. I just let it set for a night before rinsing with cold water. I then use mild detergent to wash and do my best to hand wash and never with other clothing.
so you untie and then let them set overnight? guess the mordant is already in the dye vat..how long do you keep the pieces in the vat and do you ever double expose them? Thanks
ai colour gulo kothai pabo plz janaben
Good
draw coconut tree comes out a flower....how to explain?
张斌 the tree was the last picture on the video
How much time do you have to leave it inmerse on liquid to get that effect, and do the colours stand several washes without losing the coloured tint?
I do tie and dye and batik in Ghana. Anything I dye, I leave immersed in the dye for thirty minutes to ensure its colour fast. That way it can withstand any amount of washing.
@@melamar6222 what dye did you use?
@@bcamnb Hi Caroline, i use Vat dyes. Basically its all i can get in Ghana. But can guarantee that all my cloths are colout fast
How did you make the flower
stitch resist so similar to the palm tree just a floral like pattern

Nice
Its roots are in Africa
StopProtestingForDisrespectfulBlackMen Shibori actually hails from Japan, with the earliest examples being found in the 8th century. Africa has some similar called adire that is also done with indigo, that is most specifically in west Africa.
Coincidently India also has their own form.
it first started with black africans also blacks were in ancient Japan .and Indians have back african ancestry dont forget it all started in black Africa...thats why many artifacts in Japan, China , India, Indonesia, Austrailia Pacific Islands Greece etc match those of black Africa

amazing
what kind of thread do you use?
Emily melnick I would imagine any thread would work. The effect is caused by the thread tightening down on the material preventing the die from reaching all the way. As long as the thread are all pulled tight enough it should be fine.
I used Coats Button Thread: www.makeitcoats.com/us/product/coats-specialty-button-craft-thread/ It's heavy duty and perfect for this project
