Ok, so maybe a dumb question but I haven’t seen anyone address it yet. In this movie’s storyline, do you think baby Mario and baby Luigi are our main characters that gotten transformed in the narrative somehow or separate characters like in video games (Mario kart, for example)?

I'm going to assume transformed because this seems to still take place in modern times. Unless we're flashbacking to events similar to Yoshi's Island, via Rosalina's storytelling, but I'm feeling that is unlikley.

Transformation, more than likely. The previous movie had a flashback sequence showing that this is what M+L looked like as babies.
My guess is that Kamek cursed them, and part of their arc will revolve around Yoshi helping to change them back.
