Marshall introduced The Guv'nor in 1988 and discontinued it in 1991. Essentially one of the first 'Marshall In A Box' pedals, it is becoming ever more collectible for the great tones it was able to produce.
(Not to be confused with the current Marshall GV2 Guv'nor - which sounds nowhere near as good!)
During production though, Marshall moved the manufacturing of the pedal from England to Korea - and there has long been discussions on pedal forums as to whether there's any differences between the two. So...
...here they are side by side! On the right we have the English Guv'nor, and on the left a Korean model. For good measure, we also have a Wampler Plexi Drive (a modern Marshall-In-A-Box pedal) to see how it compares...and also how the Guv'nors vary when being stacked into another overdrive pedal.
Can you hear any differences? Comment below with your thoughts!
To my ears, the English Guv' has slightly more note clarity overall, and the Korean has slightly more bass when everything is equal (though as the video shows at the end, this can be easily compensated for with a quick EQ tweak). The noise floor in the Korean seems slightly lower too.
To be honest though, these are probably only differences that you'll ever be aware of when A/B-ing the pedals side by side. For all intents and purposes, these pedals are essentially identical.
Guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Studio with Bare Knuckle Nantucket P90s, through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone, recorded with a simple SM57 and an sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon.
