my besfriend came out a week before he sang this and since he was the choir lead he sang this and at 2:03 he broke down crying (his grandpa used to tell him that) and i had to go up to help him sing and this song just giives me a warm tingle in my heart everytime i hear this song-this is a beautiful song
I’m straight, but damn that relationship between father and son made me want to cry. You could tell the dad really loves his son, but that he just doesn’t really understand. This song doesn’t sound like it comes from a place of anger or bitterness. It sounds like he didn’t really blame his dad, because he understood it didn’t come from a place of hate
Inspired to write a second verse for little girls who didn’t conform to gender standards. Little girls play nice Little girls don’t fight Little girls they cook things, wear earrings, their made of sugar plums and spice.. Little girls don’t lead Little girls have needs Little girls have long hair, they play fair, too weak to do little boy things. Mom said I know my angel’s different, But someday you”ll find a man Please don’t be so persistent So just smile and be good And you’ll understand..... That somewhere over the rainbow And if you change the way you love Maybe you can go The streets are paved with bricks of gold And if you wanna see come pray with me That somewhere over the rainbow There’s a man who’s infallible. And he wants you to know where the rain goes After the pain goes, you be dancing with halos over the rainbow .........
"Dad said, "I know my baby's special And you'll grow to be a man And I know the world may dance with devils But be strong, be flown to this holy land." There's somewhere over the rainbow And if you change the way you love Then maybe you can go The streets are paved with bricks of gold And if you wanna see, come pray with me" thats so hard hitting and heart breaking.
My girlfriend is obsessed with Todrick Hall. I often get annoyed with all of the songs she plays by him, idunno, it's just not the style of music I listen to. This song is absolutely beautiful. Whoever doesn't get moved by this song is missing a fundamental piece of their humanity. Keep doing what you do, Todrick Hall, you are undeniably an inspiration and a true talent in the field of what you do.
omg have to show this to my 5 year old son who swears he's a little girl inside and I love him just the way he is, to he hides from his bigot of a father, I want him to know he's just fine the way he is and there are plenty of of others like him.
+Kiouri Santos I love my baby to the ends of this world ...It breaks my heart for those who feel they can't be who they want.. I always tell my baby if he wants to sing and dance and wear a skirt ND makeup to do that and do it better than me. and he does
This Touched Home For Me Todrick.omg I Can't Even Explain How Much This Is Actually My Entire Childhood. African American Gay Men Didn't Have A Voice, We didn't Have Anyone To Step Up And Say Hey Your Not Alone, You Not The Only One Who Grew Up Without And Dad And Was Bullied For Being Feminine. Thank You So Much Todrick I Love You So Much. I Wann Be You When I Grow Up. I Hope You See This❤️. Genuinely Thank You. My Name Is Jordan And I'm From Jackson Mississippi.
Thank you Todrick for this beautiful song. I only just discovered you a few months ago, and listening to many of your songs. This song is another that rings true to my spirit.
This song means so much to me! Even though I am a girl who does "girl things" I have a gay brother and his whole life he has it hard. I cry and smile for him because he's different and unique! But he will always be my big brother and my hero. 💕💕💕
I showed this to my mom while she was cleaning. She stopped everything, sat down, and cried. She told me this reminded her of my older brother. He enjoyed playing with my sister's dolls and trying on her clothes, but he was always scolded for it. She said that she just didn't understand.
I wish I could have played this song for my "non-societal conforming" students when I was a teacher. I understand EVERY VIBE of this song. This is a story about LIFE composed as a song -- and Todrick Hall is a GENIUS! (BTW...every lyric about "LITTLE GIRLS" -- I didn't do much of those things. #VeryProudTomboy) ~Straight Black Woman who gets it ~Retired Teacher who gets it ~Average Citizen who gets it
Little boys don't cry Little boys aren't shy Little boys are tough They do stuff that little girls don't try Little boys don't dance Little boys wear pants Little boys are bold And then told they don't hold little boys' hands Dad said, "I don't believe in magic But I do believe in you And son if you believe in daddy Take a look at this book and believe it's true." There's somewhere over the rainbow And if you change the way you love Then maybe you can go The streets are paved with bricks of gold And if you wanna see, come pray with me Cause somewhere over the rainbow There's a man who's powerful And he wants you to know Where the rain goes After the pain goes, they'll be dancing with halos Somewhere over the rainbow (Over the rainbow, rainbow Over the rainbow) Little boys stand tall Little boys play ball Little boys, they stink They're not weak They don't like pink at all Little boys don't sing Little boys are kings Little boys fly kites, they ride bikes They don't like little girl things Dad said, "I know my baby's special And you'll grow to be a man And I know the world may dance with devils But be strong, be flown to this holy land." There's somewhere over the rainbow And if you change the way you love Then maybe you can go The streets are paved with bricks of gold And if you wanna see, come pray with me Cause somewhere over the rainbow There's a man who's powerful And he wants you to know Where the rain goes After the pain goes, they'll be dancing with halos Somewhere over the rainbow (Over the rainbow, rainbow Over the rainbow)
Don't know if you'll ever read this comment, Todrick, but I wanted to say this song hits home for me. I'm a mom to a beautiful 3 year old boy who's obsessed with Frozen (he pretends he's Elsa all the time) and dancing and dolls and singing....and has an extended family who constantly pressures me to not let him have and do those things because "he's a boy". As long as he's happy and doing the things he loves, its all the matters to me.
Tami Brown That is what matters. Making boys play with trucks and guns will. it change who they are. Just because he likes frozen doesn't mean he will be gay. I encourage you as a mother to love him unconditionally no matter what your family says. He will need you more than ever
if everyone had a mother like you, who loved their child just for who they are, and didn't try to make them be someone else, i bet the world would be so much nicer. I bet we wouldn't have all these fucked up people gunning each other down from a lifetime of pain and repression and hiding who they were. instead they get told they're wrong or bad, and grow up totally messed up, and then if they have to see people that remind them of their secret "shameful" selves, they can't handle it, and they go off the deep end and shoot people and shit. I mean, it's obviously more complicated than that, but my point is, if every mother were like you, and just their kids be themselves, and loved them no matter what, the world would be so much better, and SO MANY people would be so much less messed up
Sometimes that is better. I find the acts I like that are on the fringe keep their integrity and their realness. Top 40 isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I am a straight female. No gay sons. No gay brothers(to my knowledge). But this song touches my soul and I love it. I cry hearing this sometimes because I know so many people with horror stories like this. Being told who they are and who they should love. Being told they're going to hell if they don't change their "ways". The worst part is most of the time it starts in the home with your own family. It's so sad. This touches base on that and it's something really heartbreaking and soothing about it.
Straight men don't always conform to society's gender standards either. And they suffer from the toxic masculinity that tells them that they can't be a man and like "girl things." This song is written from Todrick Hall's pov, but it's universally relatable.
This song always makes me cry because it makes me think of my 5 yr old son and how he likes dresses, sensitive, and loving, loves to dance.. I think someday he will tell me he loves these things and I will love him even more
So beautiful... This brought me to tears... Even though what I have been through is not at all the same as you, it really struck something in me. This message just gave me strength and that you can be who you are meant to be 😊
boy oh boy this has me feeling some type of way. also i'm getting the line "I don't believe in magic, but I do believe in you" tattooed on my body immediately
A year ago I came out as bi to my family my mother called me an abomination and my father didn’t know how to react. My sisters and brother loved and cared for me during the whole process. Thank you for this healing song. Bless you 💕☺️
As a bi woman who plans to NEVER come out because of family. I can only imagine. I'm sorry it went that way with your parents but happy your siblings accept you as you are.
I'm crying love this soo much I have family who ran away and selfed harm and I showed it to my cousin and we just started crying thx todrick love you 😙😙😢😢😚😚
I am a straight woman, don't have any gay family members. But this song made me cry like a baby within the first 4 lines. Don't remember any English song having this effect on me. Todrick, you have touched a chord I didn't know existed. I think why this song appeals to so many people of all genders and sexualities, is because it doesn't just talk about the plight of homosexual men. It talks about the social pressure of fitting into stereotypes, that slowly crushes your souls. Having to hide your true self, though you are not harming anybody, is HELL indeed. The Bible isn't technically wrong.
So my little brother likes girly stuff and he believes he's a princess and I adore that(bro1), but then there's my other brother who hates it and is disgusted by it and he just can't stand it(BRO2). I tried to explain this to bro2 but he didn't like it so I showed him this and he just stared at me, smiled, and hugged bro 1 and said "I love you little princess!" and I cried.....raise song makes me smile and love Todrick Hall even more
When I first heard this song I just automatically fell in love with it. I don't know what it is about it but it is just the best song I have ever heard. And my first time listening to todrick hall was an amazing experience. I love your song todrick hall
This had to be so incredibly difficult and yet so freeing for you to write and produce. I won't belittle your experience by saying that I know how you feel, but I most certainly can relate to the message of this song. I well up multiple times while listening to this. Thank you for having the courage and mental fortitude to be able to provide this beautiful piece of your soul and share it with all of us. You are precious and appreciated.
I’m not gay nor a boy. I’m not friends with any struggling gay guys but this song still hits hard and I cry every time I hear bc I love gay people and have so much respect for them and I think it’s sad we live in a society that just being in public with the person you love is respectable and brave.
Todrick your songs helped me to love being bi and I love your work. You have helped me through some tough times and I just want to say thank you for being so unique and fierce! 😊😊😊😊
This song it's so relates to me and my struggle coming out as a kid and I'm a grown man I struggled growing up learning and accepting my sexuality this song really touches my heart because of the kid I couldn't really be myself and truly be myself for who I am and who I was inside
You can hear that every word in this song comes straight from the heart, I literally cry every time I hear this! You are so talented this song is amazing

Inspired to write a second verse for little girls who didn’t conform to gender standards.
Little girls play nice
Little girls don’t fight
Little girls they cook things, wear earrings, their made of sugar plums and spice..
Little girls don’t lead
Little girls have needs
Little girls have long hair, they play fair, too weak to do little boy things.
Mom said I know my angel’s different,
But someday you”ll find a man
Please don’t be so persistent
So just smile and be good
And you’ll understand.....
That somewhere over the rainbow
And if you change the way you love
Maybe you can go
The streets are paved with bricks of gold
And if you wanna see come pray with me
That somewhere over the rainbow
There’s a man who’s infallible.
And he wants you to know where the rain goes
After the pain goes, you be dancing with halos over the rainbow .........
TechnoTroubadour This is amazing!! 💕
I felt the same way then I found that you did. This is awesome. Thank you

TechnoTroubadour not to be dramatic but I cried
"Dad said, "I know my baby's special
And you'll grow to be a man
And I know the world may dance with devils
But be strong, be flown to this holy land."
There's somewhere over the rainbow
And if you change the way you love
Then maybe you can go
The streets are paved with bricks of gold
And if you wanna see, come pray with me"
thats so hard hitting and heart breaking.
Just hearing this and reading this lyric breaks me down in tears
This made me feel SICK. Like it's a beautiful song but so sad.

I’ve first heard about him on the radio at the Elvis Duran morning show!
Todrick took a chapter right out of my life when he wrote this track. The truth and beauty of this had me in tears. Thank you Todrick.
This hit me soul... omg crying like never before... this tell my whole story... a feminine boy... trying to live up to his dad the street king...

God bless Todrick for making this visual album. This song hits home for me. Basically what I went through when I was a child.

Couples pledge to love each other when they get married no matter what, why don’t they do the same when they have children?
I didn't expect to cry, but I did. 😭😭 I love Todrick, so much. 💓💓
