You can buy a horn at renown 20 or something
as a ret main for 17 years. i could throw a rock at any moment and hit a priest. disc priest sole purpose is to ruin rets fun in wpvp.
its all the buff's like u said no skill to it i do the same thing on my hunter lol :P u can one shot ever one in no Time noting new :(
What sucks about druid on retail is that they gutted the idea of shifting from one form to another. You just sit in cat forever. In classic druid, albeit being unfinished, feels more true to the fantasy of it.
You still shift between alot. This very video he does it really consistently.

The current talent tree promotes shapeshifting as a mechanism to reduce incoming damage & Improve healing.
Soulscape doesn't need to do this alot because he is world buffed to the tits - He squeezes every advantage out of the world.
You probably means shifting (and actually using) the shapeshift - they kind of redifined this by adding utility to the talent tree (Frenzied Regeneration + Iron Fur - Bear Form Only) So you don't use bear form for combat - but a means to an end to improve defense.
If anything - Retail promotes shapeshifting with talen abilities like: Wild Charge & Lycara's Teaching etc...
