This “bastard child” song is one of my favorites. The idea of social and cultural conformity, and not feeling connected to the values or belief systems in your own upbringing. And the process of finding where your own values stand in it all..As they are so alien from those pushed upon you.
I find it interesting that he would see himself as separate from the songs he writes and performes... I tend to merge artists with their creations as something that comes from them and reflects them, I don't really see how can they be considered in separation. But it's a curious notion for me to think about.
A storyteller is not necessarily connected to the stories they tell, just as an artist isn't necessarily connected to their art/paintings. They do what they do to convey an emotion or spread a message. I think that's where he is coming from. He may be singing about something, yet it isn't about him or experiences he's had personally. The subjects don't necessarily reflect anything about him. He's just telling a story. I think it's pretty cool.
amandamchelle I think it's awesome and it only tells how little I understand the artistic process myself, that I'm struggling with understanding the idea :)
I like it. It feels like he's taking a similar approach to songwriting as an author does to writing a short story/poem. Pieces of fiction aren't autobiographical, though they do draw on past feelings and experiences of themselves and others to create something new
I really feel this song as a chinese person raised in another culture because I still want to feel connected to my origin but i can’t bring myself to understand of the bigotry that is ingrained into modern China
I love Foreigner's God, it is a great example of a song that comes because it is needed not just because you wanted to write. I find the "bastard song" as he refers to it are some of the best songs out there. They mean something more and in this case the message is one that many can relate to. Feeling lost in a new place, struggling to fit, to find yourself. I love Hozier as an artist because he writes such meaningful music and a lot of it he claims to have no real relation to. He says in this video that he is different than his music, they're separate. I like to imagine that some creature blessed this man with the ability to give a voice to those who do not have one themselves. I like this song because its core message is that struggle to fit but that could relate to so many things. The song alludes to the idea of religion, the whole song is called Foreniger's God. But it doesn't limit itself to religious culture or loneliness. It could be family, culture as a whole as Hozier also says himself. You could be struggling to fit in because of your gender or sexuality or race. There are so many reasons why people would need to hear this song because society outcasts so many people to this lost feeling.
I've been told your favorite song reflects an experience or feeling in which you focus on. Funny, how this is one of my favorites, and I always feel out of place in every area.
Finding this 6 years later and being a lgbtq+ afro latina who was raised LDS, it just explained why my spirit was so inclined to figure out why this song resonated with me so much. So, I thank you for this even though you may never read it.
This song & "It Will Come Back" have been on constant replay for me. They're absolutely brilliant and resonate with me so deeply. I love this album! I ran to Best Buy and bought the album as soon as I could and didn't realize until I was importing it into my iTunes that it wasn't the Deluxe edition! Woe is me, haha
The song brings me to a mental landscape of the psychic energy and feelings I have repeated over the course of days, weeks, months where I can feel deep passion and love for those physically around me while also feeling a pulling grief and sadness across time and space of the conflict between humans from different cultures, speaking different languages, and interpreting different gods, and willing to kill each other, blinded by our deities and deaf to each other because of distance and translation. Even though we are all the same... Makes me want to scream to the gods of man the purest expression of grief, of the tragedy of artificial separation from ourselves, one species, one mind, one love, one home, one family.
I love this song . It's so raw and it says so much. Everyone has to listen to the letters of the Hozier, they are incredible, looking forward to the next projects, all the success for this wonderful team. Of Brazil ^^
This song speaks to me so much! I just love it. I absolutely love the entire album and i can't wait to see you in San Fransisco On the 15th of April. I hope you are doing lalapalooza again this year! Fingers crossed ;)

Who is the "she" in the song?
sounds like a song of colonization sang by the oppressor
it sounds like this one was one the label needed for album filler
