Just did this in red for my D & D loving daughter. Took my three hours to assemble, make frosting, and decorate. I only had a couple of star tips so that is what we went with.
I really loved this, I make cakes a lot and like to watch things like this to get new ideas and learn as much as possible but you made me feel so relaxed and inviting; like I was in there with you. Please you need to do more of cause you’re good at it, where can I watch the cake you made for your Dad please? Well done Anyway! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you! Great question, the simple answer is "no". I've used this technique for ten years because it is the industry standard, but let's break down why I trust this method. "why vodka?" It is flavorless alcohol, food safe, and unlike water, it will "evaporate" or adhere to your cake quickly. I've never personally experienced a taste difference when using vodka or had any customers report a taste difference. That being said there are pre-made food-safe airbrush products without alcohol at most cake supply stores!
Sorry, accidentally sent a partial message! Fabulous cake, I ❤ dragons! Hope I get to create it one day, my nieces and nephews mostly like superheroes and Disney. I did make 2 different unicorn cakes tho.
Great tutorial! This gave me a lot of ideas for the animal cake I'm planning out right now. I'm planning on doing fondant eyes though. For me, I feel like that might just work out better, but I've never worked with fondant before, so we'll see! As a fondant newb, would it be better to apply the eyes with soft fondant, or should I let them dry out and firm up a bit first?
Thank you 😊 for the great video! I will definitely use your tips while making the dragon cake my daughter wants for her birthday this weekend. Loved all the info you shared!!!
Love this video thank you!!! I was looking for inspiration on how to do a round dragon cake without fondant and this is perfect! I'll be trying this for my niece but with purples, blues and gold and maybe a little glitter! ;) Thank you!

@@CarulliCakes Thank you! I used your video and technique to make my son a Godzilla cake for his birthday. Wish I could attach a picture but it came out great (for my first time lol.) I couldn't have done it without you. :)
Hi LeeAnn, thanks for sharing the video. Can you share your buttercream recipe? My daughter loves dragon. Her birthday is coming up. I would like to give her a surprise. I tried just piping the scales yesterday, but the cream seems too soft. There is scale look, but little soft. Do I have to chill the icing on cake first before decorating?
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm going to be giving this a shot today. If mine turns out even half as good as yours I'll consider it a success lol really hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew
Hi there! Thank you for watching!! This was an 8 inch cake!! The tips I used were a number 12 wilton round tip but i used all the rounds from a 12 to a 5!
Thank you so much for the feedback! Ah for the black buttercream I always start with chocolate buttercream, it's already dark from the cocoa powder and when you add black food gel it absorbs beautifully. Alternatively, I have also bought gelatin and made a concentrated "black gel" using gelatin (clear jello) & Americolor black food gel....add that to your buttercream or cream cheese frosting and you've got NOIR blackest of black, but chocolate allergy free.
Awesome job! I was asked to make this cake for a friend of mine because she loves it! Just wondering if you'd care to share your buttercream recipie =)
Great Question! Cream cheese is a lot softer than buttercream, I suggest either filling your cake with cream cheese as filling while using buttercream on the outside or doing a half cream cheese, half buttercream blend for a more stable decorating base!
Awesome cake! Thanks so much for sharing! My nephew is turning 18 next month and is wanting a 3d dragon cake and I have no idea how I'm going to do it yet, but watching how you designed the face and did the scales will really help me.
@@CarulliCakes My dragon cake turned out awesome, thanks to watching and rewatching your video a ton of times while creating it. After piping about 15 million (or so it seemed) scales on the cake, I was glad to be done! Thanks for posting this video, it was so helpful. I would love to show you a picture of my finished cake, do you have an email I could send it to?
Thank you so much for that feed back! I definitely wasn't very good at placement in this video and hopefully can make a new video that can highlight all the details next time! Appreciate your time!
I know this was a long video so thank you for hanging in there and let me know what you think in the comments!!
I love that you used buttercream icing instead of fondant to make such a cool looking cake.
Thank you, that means a lot!

I would cut the pieced out to allow them to dry to the shape of the cake!!
You did an amazing job!! Love this so much!!! What size tip did you use to make the scales??
Thank you so much!! I used a 12 tip and a bunch of rounds tips in between!!

Beautiful cake. How do you get your black so dark? And do you have a template or link you’d be willing to share for the eyes? Thank you!

Wow, this is AMAZING! My boys want a dragon cake really bad but I’m so scared! I think I’m going to try it anyways!!
GURL YOU GOT THIS!! Don't be afraid! Practice makes progress and as long as you love what you're doing it'll be wonderful!!
I wonder what this would look like if done with a leaf tip instead of a round tip. Have you ever tried?
If you check out our Instagram, under the story slide with the dragon you will find a dragon with that tip being used !
Do you have to air brush the cake?
Great question!! NO, you do not have to airbrush, I was just having fun and experimenting!
Which icing tip do you use for the scales?
What tips are using to cover the head of that dragon cake?
A simple Wilton "12 Round Tip, but you could use any "round" tip, or cut the tip of your icing bag and it will work the same!
Awesome job! I was asked to make this cake for a friend of mine because she loves it! Just wondering if you'd care to share your buttercream recipie =)
I use an American style buttercream but it can be replicated with any recipe!! I'll drop the recipe in my next video!!
Can I use cream cheese frostin???

American Buttercream but French or Italian works just as well!!
Awesome🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
