- Do you ever wonder why we get sick from time to time? Well kids, this is mostly due to the germs and bacteria we pick up throughout the day. Do you know what germs are? Well...let’s learn all about it together with another Wellness 101 Junior!
Germs are tiny living organisms that exist all around us and can attack our bodies and make us sick. Germs are so small and so sneaky that they can creep into our bodies without us ever knowing until symptoms arrive like fevers, sniffles, rashes, coughing, vomiting, or diarrhea. As a matter of fact...they are so small...that you need a microscope to see them!
Most germs are spread through the air when someone sneezes, coughs, or even breaths. Germs can also spread in sweat, spit, and blood. Another way germs can pass from person to person is when a person touches something that has germs on it, like shaking hands with someone who has a cold, and then touches their face.
Germs have favorite places to live and hide like: door knobs, bathrooms, kitchen counter tops, cell phones and gaming devices!
If you don’t kill these germs, they get inside you and make you sick! But have no fear my friends....you can kill these germs and help protect yourself and others by following these simple steps.
Wash your hands as often as you can. And we are not talking about just running your hands under water either gang. In order to effectively wash your hands you need to scrub with soap and water, front and back and between your fingers and nails for 20 seconds. Try singing the happy birthday song twice to yourself to make sure you’ve scrubbed long enough! Wash your hands before you eat, after using the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, after touching your pets, after you play outside, and after being around a sick person.
Take care of your immune system. Keep your body healthy by eating well, getting plenty of exercise and getting a good night’s rest. You want your immune system at its best to take on any germs that come it’s way.
Get your shots. I know...nobody likes shots, but shots like the flu vaccine will help keep your immune system strong and ready to battle the germs.
And lastly, Cover up! In order to protect others, you’ll need to keep your germs to yourself. If you need to cough or sneeze...use the Dracula cough! Cover your nose and mouth and cough into the crook of your elbow to keep your hands clean and your germs contained...like this!
That’s it gang...remember kiddos...germs are everywhere and they can make you and your loved ones sicks. Do your part to help stop the spread of germs. Together we can all make a difference!
