- Lance Bass said growing up in the boy band NSYNC meant he was called "gay" all the time: "Being in a boy band, I got called gay every single day that I was in the band. And it wasn't because they actually thought I was gay. It's just because I was in a boy band. All of us got that. I definitely wasn't singled out. I think all of us got it equally."
He also reveals that his mom went on the road with him on his first tour, and that it was strongly advised not to talk about his personal life: "Being in the entertainment industry, you get told certain things and they allude to certain things. No one ever flat-out said, 'Listen, if you're gay, you can't do this," Bass says. "But they would [say] things like, 'You know, if you have a girlfriend, you can't really talk about them' and 'Remember your audience, your fans out there. They don't want to really know about your personal life.' So that always to me was kind of a backhanded, like, 'Look, we know you're gay, keep it a secret, kid.'"

It must’ve been really strange being the ultimate “symbol of attraction” for the female gaze as a member of the boy band, and being gay at the same time. I know idols in Korea are still going through what lance went through. Must be hard.
When I was in school insecure people called guys gay if they did anything nice or endearing or sensitive. I always thought it was funny because it was like they thought you'd call someone gay to 'eliminate a threat', like ah if we emasculate the guy, he'll be seen as less of a guy, and the girls won't want them.
Clearly, not the case with this band.
Of all the Nsync members, Lance definitely aged the best for sure.

I actually don't think them telling him not to talk about his personal life was necessarily a sly comment. They literally said that to all of them. They would be more popular with their audience if the girls thought they were single and available. Probably noone thought he was gay
I was going to come down and say this.
You’re right, but as a closeted, young, impressionable kid who was hyper-aware of the fact that he was hiding a secret he probably internalised what they said differently. He also said that he wasn’t singled out when being called gay because the whole band was called gay just for being in a boy band.

I think this too. I don’t think I would have had the biggest crush on him and my walls filled with his posters when I was 12 if I knew about his dating life. They sold more being single in the public eye.

The Backstreet Boys all had to hide the fact that they all were pretty much in serious relationships. It was about money. I am sure they didn't want anyone to come out as gay at the time too but still he that wasn't some backhanded comment to just him implying he was gay

From what I remember, all boybands were called “gay” back in the day when I was a preteen. Sure they were popular among lots of fans, but there’s always ignorant haters.
I'm a 61 yr old female married to a 66 yr old man & we have 2 adult sons (ages 33 & 20. I have a gay female cousin on my mom's side & my husband has 1 gay brother. Lance Bass and Darren Hayes of Savage Garden are my very favorites then and now. I really don't have idea they had that in common. But the time I knew about it. Not bothers me. I loved them both the same. Same extremely talented beautiful people. 😍

I never said you were gay but I wasn't a N*Sync member. I did reprimand people for writing themselves love letters and saying they were from you though. Some of their names as far as I know were Kayla Ann Adkins, Dorothy Weyant and Ralanda Tara Cook.

Back when I was a kid, the term “gay” was used to offend and insult people. Back then, that behavior was considered normal. But today, it’s frowned upon to use that word in an offensive manner as LGBTQ has become more acceptable.

It got so bad that magazines started hounding him saying they knew he was gay and they would post the story forcing him to come out with or without him. So he had a day to decide what to do and therefore his piece in People magazine came out.

Back then, being called ‘gay’ was not a compliment. When I used it, it meant ‘stupid’, ‘weird’, ‘bad’. It was wrong, but I was trying to fit in with the crowd. You perpetuate LGBTQ as ‘the other’ like other minorities. We then grow up and realize it was wrong.

Doh the problem was not that he was called gay for being gay, as people didn’t know it then, it was just because he was in a boyband which is something enjoyed by mostly girls. Therefore, gay was not used as a connotation of his sexuality but as a slur to diminish these men for catering to young female audiences. Anything that gets a huge following among women, especially young women, gets discredited and/or perceived as of inferior quality.
The whole band was called gay for being a boyband.
