I remember listening to this song when I didn't understood half of the lyrics (I'm french) but it get me in tears every time, just because of the way he raps, the clip... ldk why...I guess I felt what he means in this song, and it shows his talent, especially for storytelling ! I was on the same situation for a lot of his songs, like When I'm gone

I always loved this song when I bought the album in 2013. I was too young to understand the story. But now I can and Marshall was right, it was a tangled web they had. Just relieving he got to apologize to his Mom for everything.

My brother killed himself when I was little and my mom became an alcoholic. She couldn't cope. I used to get so mad at her and listened to Cleaning Out My Closet on repeat to piss her off. I grew up, I realized what she went through was one of the hardest things a mother could endure and I found myself appreciating her in a new way. She died from the alcoholism, I had to take her off of life support. I kissed her forehead as she died in my arms and all I could hear was this song in my head. I lost my dad last year, he got murdered. I found myself wanting my mama and looking for her strength. She wasn't here but I found that strength because of the love she gave me when she was here. I love you mama. Rest in peace💕

Em. I hope you see this.
My little brother died from Drug use in 2021... All of our lives he and me were all that we had. I became his mother, in a sense, looking out for him, checking up on him. Our mom always struggled with men and drugs. As my brother grew up he had this burning hatred for our mom and he never let it be left unsaid. The last few years of his life, he really came around and was able to open up to my mom. This song was his dedication to her that we all make mistakes, and we either let them eat us alive and destroy us... or we learn to let them go and let people be who they are.
I have been clean for 8 years now, and I work in a rehabilitation center helping people get into the program. But, 3 years ago when my brother died, it was the worst pain I'd ever experienced. He asked me to be the one to make sure that the doctors always did all they could because he was dying slowly from Endocarditis. It still eats me up, knowing I allowed them to pull the plug on the only other person in this world who knew and understands me. Your music takes me back to a time with him that I cannot experience any other way. You were always his favorite artist (and mine but that's irrelevant). Thank you, Em. You do so much more than just write music, you affect people's lives in so many ways.

Haven't heard this in so many years, and boy is it making me cry like a baby. I relate to his life so much, especially his relationship with his mother. I know I held so much resentment towards my Mother in the past, but finding forgiveness in my heart was one of the fulfilling feelings I ever felt. So happy he was able to get to that point cause his hatred for his Mother was relatable for me, but also broke my heart.

    LYRICS:
Mom, I know I let you down
And though you say the days are happy
Why is the power off and I'm fucked up?
And, mom, I know he's not around
But don't you place the blame on me
As you pour yourself another drink, yeah
I went in headfirst, never thinkin' about who, what I said hurt
In what verse, my mom probably got it the worst
The brunt of it, but as stubborn as we are, did I take it too far?
"Cleanin' Out My Closet" and all them other songs
But regardless, I don't hate you 'cause, Ma
You're still beautiful to me, 'cause you're my Ma
Though far be it from you to be calm
Our house was Vietnam, Desert Storm
And both of us put together could form an atomic bomb
    Equivalent to chemical warfare
And forever we could drag this on and on
But agree to disagree, that gift for me
Up under the Christmas tree don't mean shit to me
    You're kickin' me out? It's 15 degrees
And it's Christmas Eve, "Little prick, just leave"
Ma, let me grab my fucking coat
Anything to have each other's goats
Why we always at each other's throats?
Especially when Dad, he fucked us both
We're in the same fuckin' boat
You'd think that'd make us close (nope)
Further away it drove us, but together, headlights shine
And a car full of belongings, still got a ways to go
Back to grandma's house, it's straight up the road
And I was the man of the house, the oldest
So my shoulders carried the weight of the load
Then Nate got taken away by the state at eight years old
And that's when I realized you were sick
And it wasn't fixable or changeable
And to this day we remain estranged, and I hate it though, but
I guess we are who we are
Headlights shining in the dark night, I drive on
Maybe we took this too far
'Cause to this day we remain estranged, and I hate it though
'Cause you ain't even get to witness your grandbabies grow
But I'm sorry, momma, for "Cleanin' Out My Closet"
At the time I was angry, rightfully? Maybe so
Never meant that far to take it though
'Cause now I know it's not your fault, and I'm not makin' jokes
That song I no longer play at shows
And I cringe every time it's on the radio
And I think of Nathan being placed in a home
And all the medicine you fed us and
How I just wanted you to taste your own
But now the medication's takin' over
And your mental state's deterioratin' slow
And I'm way too old to cry, the shit is painful though
But, Ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan, yo
All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both
Foster care, that cross you bear, few may be as heavy as yours
But I love you, Debbie Mathers
Oh, what a tangled web we have 'cause
One thing I never asked was
Where the fuck my deadbeat dad was
Fuck it, I guess he had trouble keepin' up with every address
But I'da flipped every mattress, every rock and desert cactus
    Owned a collection of maps
And followed my kids to the edge of the atlas
If someone ever moved 'em from me
That you coulda bet your asses
If I had to come down the chimney, dressed as Santa, kidnap 'em
And although one has only met their grandma once
You pulled up in our drive one night
As we were leavin' to get some hamburgers
Me, her and Nate, we introduced you, hugged you
And as you left I had this overwhelming sadness
Come over me as we pulled off to go our separate paths and
I saw your headlights as I looked back
And I'm mad I didn't get the chance to
Thank you for being my mom and my dad
So, mom, please accept this as a
Tribute, I wrote this on the jet, I guess I had to
Get this off my chest, I hope I get the chance to
Lay it 'fore I'm dead, the stewardess said to fasten
My seatbelt, I guess we're crashin'
So, if I'm not dreamin', I hope you get this message that
I will always love you from afar, 'cause you're my mom
I guess we are who we are
Headlights shining in the dark night, I drive on
Maybe we took this too far
    I want a new life

I deeply relate to Eminem because I came from a broken home, I resented my mom for the longest and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how sick my mom was, this song makes me cry because I feel the same as Eminem, I had the same feelings he had when he made “Cleanin out my closet” because it reflected how I felt at the time about my mom, what just made me become a sobbing mess is when he says
“And I'm way too old to cry, the shit is painful though
But, Ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan, yo
All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both
Foster care, that cross you bear, few may be as heavy as yours
But I love you, Debbie Mathers”
    And
“And I'm mad I didn't get the chance to,
Thank you for being my mom and dad”
I’ve never related to lyrics as much as these.
I regret the horrible things I’ve said to her and learned to forgive despite the pain that was caused, now I’m loving her from afar, we are not close now in anyway but every time she acts out I just remember that she’s sick and can’t control her own actions like a normal person can

And it makes me sick everytime when I hear these words such as "i love you" or "you are everything for us" or "you are nothing but a delusional bully". I was getting sick of this. I felt broken after my mom passed away and my ex girlfriend ditched me away. I didn't even want to celebrate holidays but afterwards I went because after all i am part of that garbage family being raised by drinkers, gossipers and father which i dislike his hypocrisy because he did something good. I used to relate so much to his songs and feel like he was speaking for me, so to hear this and see that no matter how rough I thought it was, there's always hope for a loving family, it just hits too hard.. you gotta really understand the Marshall Mathers story to realize just how significant this song is. I'm really happy he made this for not only himself and his mother, but for all those who had strained relationships with their parents growing up.

I'm a grown man but no joke, this song makes me cry every single time I listen to it. It makes me think of my own family and the strained relationships I have with some of them; it's painful to even think about and I feel an immense guilt most of the time, yet I have no idea what to do.

This song is really beautiful tbh. In this song he's apologizing to his mom for "cleaning out my closet" but you have to understand his mom had a drug problem and pushed all of her anger on her young son. When he wrote that song he was filled with rage. Now in her later years he knows what kind of mother she was but he realized what she was going through a single mom with a drug addiction. He feels guilty for making that song but I understand why he did it. He's so sad to see his mom finally wearing away. He does love her and this song is so nice.

Today I'm 34, I don't hate her anymore, I just feel sad for everything that happened, I feel sad for her sometimes, I totally understand Eminem in this song and in cleaning out my closet, and Jade is right too

I lost my mom two years ago its hard to think about how much more time I could have spent If I hadn't moved to Los Angeles. In her final years my younger brother took on here illness burden. He quit his job dumped his girlfriend gave up his entire lifestyle just to take care of my mother.
I'm glad Eminem is trying to make things right with his mother although this was not his mother in this video its still is a good representation of his mom.
I hope he actually is trying to make things right between them.
