If all goes as planned im getting married next fall. I dont want an atypical wedding at all i strictly want the handfasting ceremony. So these type videos are very helpful in much needed decision making.
I just witnessed my first handfasting last year and I absolutely loved the meaning behind these ceremonies. It was beautiful and such an honor to watch!
Thank you for this lovely, simple demonstration of HF. It was very useful for recapping before my recent wedding ceremony. My US wedding clients loved it.
Instead of twirling the knot after tying it with the first method, I'm thinking of braiding the ends, not sure where to go from there, bt I like the idea of braids. your lives woven into each others.
I'm getting married on 8/30 so less than two weeks away. We are going to be doing the second version you mentioned (starting at 4:47). It's so beautiful
Thank you so much for sharing this. We're having a friend officiate our handfasting in September 2022 and this is perfect for showing him how we want it done.
Brilliant! Thank you so much! I'm officiating my friends' wedding latter this summer and they would like a handfasting ritual but like all the rest, I've never done any of it before, sooooo once again, thank you!
What if one side of the family isn't there in your life? As sad as this might seem, I don't think my family will have anything to do with me when I find the one for me. And I don't think it would be genuine to represent a family you don't have. I don't mean to be sad, I've accepted it, however, I'm very curious on how I could change it to fit me. I do want to do this. It's a lovely ceremony. I like this video as well, and I've never really questioned the saying "tied the knot" and it surprised me when I learned that's were it came from. Very informative.
Do you have close friends? If so, have friends come up and represent you. Family is not blood, it's a bond you create with people whom you love. If that happens to be friends or your significant other's family, then so be it! You can absolutely do this ceremony if you want to.
I love this idea! I especially loved the 2nd one as a whole, and the part where friends/family come up and lay the fabric over your hands. (I’d probably braid the ends of the third one though once done for decoration to put in a picture box). But that 2nd one 😍😍😍 so so beautiful
When I get married some day I want a soft of combination between a handfastings and a traditional wedding, so I'm looking at both closely to determine what aspects I want to include.
We used your tutorial to guide the hand fasting portion of our wedding last Saturday, thank you so much for that :) I was wondering if anyone has sent you the completed version of #1? I mean if anyone has made specific suggestions for how to finish it off like you mention about 4.15 min in, “if you have an arty family member they can make that into a beautiful piece of knot work.” I’ve tried googling and haven’t come up with much but if possible, if you could point me in a direction that would be very helpful.
Hi Emily, So sorry to take so long to get back to you....and I suspect that you have it all sorted out by now. Sadly I do not have a photo - but I know it has been done! If it hasn't been sorted yet I suggest you maybe have a word with a florist? or one of the set design type companies that scene set for couples or venues these days? I will make a point of taking my bits of cloth to a favourite florist and getting them to film a tutorial for me! Hope you had a wonderful day - and congratulations! xx

This is wonderful! Thank you so much for posting this! Can you tell me what type of ribbon I need to look for when looking for something to tie the knot with?
It’s believed by some that if you get hand-fasted to someone that you’re together for eternity, from this life to all other future lives. So you better be sure that you really love that person. Lol I never want to get married but there’s one man that I wouldn’t mind being attached to for eternity, so if it ever gets to that point hand-fasting may be the way to go.
Hey Mal, I'm afraid my tech is not up to much here (poor phone for filming!) ... and I don't have volunteers to hand either with the lockdown...BUT both the infinity knot, and the one with the ribbons that tie below the hands could be done with five strands instead of the three shown in the film here. Alternatively, you might find a 'how to' on five strand braids - for hair or bread maybe? - that could be adapted. Best wishes, x j
I'm (K)not sure it has a name Mary - or if it does I don't know what it is! I think of it as the Saltire knot, as the cloth forms the cross that is depicted on the Scottish flag (which is called the Saltire), but I have also referred to it as the 'Tah Dah' hand-fasting - as it certainly creates a proper 'Tah Dah' moment in the ceremony!

Hi Tara. Thanks for taking the time to comment. There really are endless ways that a binding knot can be tied - as many as there are knots really! - but I think it would be limited by the complexity of the shape you are trying to make. There are many Celtic style knots that could be tried, but if you have a particular form in mind, it might be worth seeing if you could make the shape in two parts - and then join them together in the ceremony? Alternatively, make a very simple knot in the ceremony, and use that as the centre of a larger or more complex/Celtic design to be kept as a memento. Have fun trying them out! J
I’m getting ready to officiate a wedding and they’ve asked this to be done. Is it OK to do it at the end of the ceremony after the vows and exchanges of the rings?
Hi Richard, No rules that I'm aware of (though I'm sure there will be folk who disagree on that!) - and I have seen folk bound together at the end of the ceremony (one left hand to one right hand) and then walk out bound together for photos. Takes the handfast into the rest of the day in a fun way.
Hi Abby, the cord is the kind used to make curtain tie backs - and I got it at my local branch of Dunelm Mill - but any curtain supplies shop should have them. Have a grand day when it comes! x j

Hi Jennifer, Glad you found the video helpful, and a bit of a yes & no answer on the Wiccan weddings! Humanism is purely non-religious, and in my mind a Wiccan wedding is very much a religious occasion. In fact given that the rites involved might be waaaaay older than Christianity, i suspect you could say it is MORE religious! There are celebrants that are happy to include a lightweight version of say 'jumping the broomstick', or asking the cardinal directions for their 'blessing' or support for the marriage to follow the ceremony. It is a bit of a wavy line that guides each of us on where a - once common - serious religious act becomes a non-religious cross cultural 'symbolic gesture', as jumping the broomstick has become, so would suggest that if you can't find a local Pagan officiant, do speak to an interfaith minister, or have a look at the HSS website, or at my blog to find out if a non religious ceremony might be an option for you and your partner. Have a great day when it comes round, and do shout me direct for any more information, if this doesn't cover it all for you. Jane xx
Hiya Wolverine! Honestly? I'm not sure... I think it would be a proposal of marriage with the hand fasting bit being either a ritual included at an engagement or betrothal occasion, or as an element included in the wedding ceremony - when you get to that! If you are considering a proposal the advice I'd offer is very simple: Be yourself, but know too what sort of proposal would make her happy, and mix and match till it feels right! Best wishes! x J
