I will admit rock painting kits never made sense for me when all you need is rocks and paint. Honestly I feel like creativity for kids is probably best.
They make sense for me because rocks don’t naturally occur where I live (I know, weird, right?) but it seems like it’s pretty rare to be in an area like that. When I need rocks for an art project, I always feel silly going to a store to buy some since everyone else probably just gets them from their yard or from a park, lol.
Not to mentiom you can buy better paint for pretty cheap. And a wider variety of colors, better brushes, etc. When i was a kid it was what got me interested in painting and art in general.
Same.go get paint from dollar store or whatever (you get more paint anyways that you can use later) then find rocks outside and boom! Made your own kit
The point of rock painting is to hide them out around town and brighten someone’s day when they find it (usually kids, but I definitely smile whenever i see one)
@@annapruitt5546 Painting rocks is a fun activity which I personally find stress relieving. And they're mostly just decorative but you can do that too.
Little bit of advice: I've found that using a cosmetic sponge for the first couple layers works great when painting rocks. It smears the paint on pretty smooth, and seems to apply more paint than a brush does. Really made it faster for getting those base coats in place.
When I was a small child I had a tricycle with a little container on the back of it that I used to fill with rocks....I loved the sounds of rocks and I still do actually
Loved this! I used to paint rocks and leave them around parks for people to find, before covid-19, it was fun. Now I have a HUGE stash to disperse when vaccines get rolling in the USA.
There is a certain time during the year we paint rocks in indiana and hide them. Whoever finds the rocks can either keep them or move them. It is always fun to see the current kinds of rocks and styles. Does anyone else do this? I hope you're doing well!
You could make a similar and much cheaper rock painting kit from stuff from the Dollar Tree. Minimal Kit: 1. Bag of river rocks from the floral section 2. Strip of acrylic paint pots 3. Paintbrush set (I recommend the Crafter's Square sets for adults, not the kid sets) 4. Rub-on transfers (They don't have faces, but they do have some nice word and picture transfers. Find them in the craft section with the stickers. These are rub-ons, not water transfers.) Total Price: $4 They also have glitter glues, stick-on jewels, and google eyes. I'm not sure if they have metallic paint pot strips, because I usually don't buy paint strips like that, but it would be worth checking, because they do have the paint strips in different varieties. AND you could make an even better kit by adding a tube of Fix-All Adhesive (find in the hardware section) for gluing things on the rocks and a bottle of Mod Podge for sealing the rocks after they are painted. $8 for a deluxe kit with metallic paints, glitter glues, stick-on jewels and google eyes. $10 for a super deluxe kit with all of that plus Fix-All Adhesive and Mod Podge!
I feel like Jackie isn’t aware of the rock painting community aspect of things because she mentioned how they’re weather proof for plants but really it’s because they are often outdoor decoration and people make “Community Rock Gardens” hehe
I work in a arts and craft supply store and we regularly have people come in and ask if we sell rocks, then be completely baffled when we say "no". When literally less than 50 meters from our door, there's a large river where you could pick up all the rocks you like for free. Edit: Also a little disclaimer here: Acrylic paint is waterproof, yes, but in most cases not fully weatherproof by default! There ARE some brands that make specifically weatherproof acrylics, but every other acrylic color needs to be sealed with a clear coat to make it actually weatherproof. Otherwise, if you put your painted rock for example outside or into a plant pot as decoration, the color WILL come off after a while. ALSO, acrylics need aproximately an hour to fully dry, even though you'll be able to touch and not smear them after just a few minutes. The fact that the dinosaur's face remained sticky is probably due to the several layers of acrylics below not being fully dry yet and the 'tattoo' constantly absorbing the moisture from below.
Apparently, painting rocks and leaving them places is a thing too, which is kind of cool! I didn't know this until someone painted a rock and left it in my mom's gnome village.
