I want this played at my funeral…but it has to be by this version of the King Singers who produced such a clean, stunning rendition of Sullivan’s music x
"The Long Day Closes" was written in1868 by Sir Arthur Sullivan, who was indeed one half of the duo Gilbert & Sullivan. This piece was often performed at the funerals of members of the D'Oyly Carte Opera company, who performed their Savoy operas from 1870-1882. Search my uploads for a clip of Paul Phoenix (the tenor in the above) singing Sullivan's "When a Merry Maiden Marries" (from The Gondoliers) for the Queen Mum as an 11 year old chorister.
It's probably just 'typos' but in fact the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company performed the Savoy Operas professionally continuously from 1878 until 1982 in the form of the 'old' company, [prior to, and during the first production of 'Pinafore' the company was funded by others in addition to Richard D'Oyly Carte's input, and was not The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company until substantially into the first production.] - There have been firm proposals immediately before the uncertainty now generated by Covid-19 to re-institute professional performances by D'Oyly Carte as the result of the generosity of a distinguished individual benefactor.
His finest work was done other than in the well-known collaboration with W.S.Gilbert: try The Golden Legend, The Light of the World, his serious opera Ivanhoe, the Symphony in E, etc......etc.....!
This goes to show JUST HOW GOOD 'The King Singers' are.. From 'Widdicombe Fare' to 'the Long Day Closes' ... Whatever they sing, it ALWAYS sounds superb, wonderfu,l uplifting, and totally amazing... *sighs* :0)x
Sullivan was famous for his choral music and hymns and love songs before he worked with Gilbert. Both were marvelous in their own right and magical together. Beautiful vocal performance!
@paracletelux ... Awww sweet 'lil Paul', how cute was he then .. AND look at what he does now, what a singer and all-round cracking bloke, he is totally an asset toTKS... The whole ensemble fill my heart and soul with undiluted joy. Many thanks for posting these gems, for us all to enjoy ... :0)x
@paracletelux .. Hello it's nice to see you here too,, not only loving LIBERA, as everyone should, but also the AWESOME KINGS SINGERS too... with harmonies too exquisite to be true, I wonder if any of 'our' grown up Libera lads will one day grace the stage as a Kings Singer?? Wow wouldn't that be fabulous.. Oh well I can dream can't I .. :0)x
@paracletelux This is a very good summing up except for the fact that the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company did not come into existence until 1877 when (as the Comedy Opera Company) they performed THE SORCERER. THESPIS (the first G & S) was performed at the Gaiety Theatre by that houses stock company and never entered the D'Oyly Carte repertoire. TRIAL BY JURY did not enter the repertoire until the SORCERER revival of 1884. The company eventually disbanded in 1982 (not 1882 as stated.
@MetalJasnic If you love bass notes, may I suggest Glenn Miller singing, "A basso profundo am I". It's here: watch?v=eo_lUP_Jdt0 BTW, Stephen (the bass of TKS) is singing a B1 just before the last note (a fourth below!)
Robbertstoop, this part song is by Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), the composer of The Mikado and HMS Pinafore etc. . What are you drivelling about when you say it's by an older Sullivan? Being written in the 1860s, it's technically by a younger Sullivan; the same man, nonetheless. Don't be fatuous, unless you wish to conform to prevalent youtube standards . And don't make any assertions until you're sure of your facts.
Did they sing anything else that night? I notice no orchestra on stage so wondered if they did the whole session and, if so, is the rest available anywhere please?
This beautiful hymn was sang at my father's funeral. Absolutely beautiful rendition! Loved every second of it....

This is a perfect performance of a gorgeous song that deserves a lot more performances. We will be singing it at my father's funeral.
Just sublime. Bless Sir Arthur and the Kingsingers.
This song makes my spine tingle. Perfection at its' best. Have asked it to be sung at my funeral
Never thought such a beautiful song could be our schools alma mater.
there are no words for this wonderful performance, I'm speachless. I enjoyed every second of this pleasure!
vocally, you get as close to perfection as can be...
a great performance!!!

Legend
Koninklijk Mannenkoor Zang en Vriendschap zong dit op de ere begraafplaats aan de zeeweg Zo mooi.
Wow...Hauntingly beautiful.
Lovely rendition of this choral music. Had no idea that Sullivan had fame as a solo composer.
The King's Singers were great!

Got to love the bass note on the final chord. Just makes me all wibbly
It's the penultimate bass note that gets me!
Perfection.
OMG! I didn't expect to see you here. (Love your channel and musical taste)
very moving

Lovely performance. Thanks.

Both were marvelous in their own right and magical together. Beautiful vocal performance!
But those long final chords are killers, even for the KSs!
Beautiful !!!
A musical moment
Heard them sing this in Dallas last weekend. Amazing.
Wonderful! Thank you so much.
Full of beauty👍
One of the hymns i miss most singing in our Stravagazza choir...the long day closes...
Simply amazing ! I hope to meet you again soon in France...Thanks for sharing this video.
Ah, I am so glad that someone posted snidbits from this performance! I was wanting something new from them! Great song and arrangement!

@WBensburg : whoops, nice catch!
It is Stephen singing the B1. U can tell by how he slides up from it to the D.
@paracletelux Just wanted to correct a typo: the D'Oyly Carte Opera company closed in 1982, not 1882. :)
Drop a semitone? Far from it. These guys are spot on from one end to the other.
+Edward Higginbottom You're absolutely right. They are faultless in their tuning, as one would expect from this prestigious ensemble.

Sounds like David singing that at 3:56

BTW, Stephen (the bass of TKS) is singing a B1 just before the last note (a fourth below!)
Is that an overtone, or an actual B1 that's rattling my subwoofer at 3:56?

Magnificent! Were the lyrics written by W. S. Gilbert?
No, Henry Chorley wrote the text.
Is this the King Singers? Why so little information?
@robbertstoop Sorry, but it IS the same Sullivan!!!
What a long voyage and now its the end..........Goodbye.
Did they sing anything else that night? I notice no orchestra on stage so wondered if they did the whole session and, if so, is the rest available anywhere please?
This is the finale of an hour and a half concert. :)

@@WBensburg Thank you ever so much Bill. Muchos appreciatos. :)
@@NickJay have u find the entire concert?
@@SkyFly96 I just checked and yes I do. It's 175 Mb so not sure it would send by email. But yes I got it, thanks.
Closiz, rosiz, reposiz surely?
Nope, Henry Fothergill Chorley.
Not a nice comment yet fact:
even this high quality ensemble drops in tone height, nearly a semitone.
Check for yourself, please.
+jepz11 think your idea of a semitone is a little different to mine!
+sussexbearandpelt So?
+jepz11 Starts out in the key of F and ends in the key of F.
@@rumba7 I'd say they dropped from F to E# ;)
Rubbish. They are incapable of pitch errors.
Perfection.
