    I wouldn’t recommend anyone get into automotive. You require the training a doctor needs but get paid a fraction.
    The flat rate system basically protects the shop from paying you if they aren’t getting paid. Well if I’m taking a risk of not getting paid then I should be getting paid way more money. I’ve met so many younger guys that quit because they were making 15 bucks an hour to bust their ass and pay for tools. So they go find some job that’s a lot easier, pays more and no more buying tools. Most of the shops I’ve worked for act like your committing a crime when you ask for a day off. This new car dealer I worked for had some old guys that worked there for well over 30 years, they have back problems, joint problems and more problems that are caused by working on cars so they slowed down a lot and the dealer fired them because they were slowing down. All the years they made that dealership money and they fired them because they slowed down literally from making them money.
    Why would any kid want to get into this shitty business when they could get a job working in the computer industry making more money and not messing up their body. I’m 33 and I have 3 bad disks in my back from this business. Lifting all the heavy transmissions, tires. Yeah I make well above average money but I can’t do this job for much longer so it really wasn’t worth the time I have invested.
    So to any kids reading this find a better career

    Don't expect to make 120k for a long time in the field. The only way to get a raise in the field is to switch jobs. Even after 12 plus years if you do reach master tech status because your employer finally sent you to school you will probably have to work 70 hours a week to make 120k. Also, the median price of a house in Boston is 500k so I'm going to take a stab at the fact of 40k being just above the poverty level in the Boston. Did I mention the schools cost 30k for a 9 month program and tools will run about 30k to 50k. Stay away young grasshopper.

    Automotive mechanics spend a lot of time looking at their own shoes wondering when they will afford new ones and why they choose that dirty career instead of being a doctor who probably retains less knowledge

    I'm a master tech...and never saw 45k a year...tools are more like 50k after 5 years, and several thousand a year after...it's the pay, and lies about how much a tech makes doesn't help the situation...interview the techs, not the bosses

    • @ScooterTuck11
      @ScooterTuck11 6 лет назад +3

      Kazadrix Myer I agree. I'm currently serving in the Marines. But I do my own work. I've been thinking about doing 20 years retire and then go to a tech school to refine my skills but I don't want to be stuck at 20-40k a year. That's not good enough. Even where I'm originally from. Yes, interview the mechanic not bosses. 👍

  • @northsideirish312
    @northsideirish312 6 лет назад +9

    Maybe such a shortage is caused by UNFAIRLY LOW PAY FOR VERY DIFFICULT WORK and there are far more attractive career choices available to kids today. Is there a valid reason why a teenage girl was interviewed for this instead of a beaten-down demoralized underpaid experienced veteran tech? Most likely because that bitter veteran would talk about the harsh ugly truth too much. First, increase the pay to a much higher respectable level that is commensurate with the physical and mental demands of this dirty job and maybe that shortage would end sooner than later.

    Been a mechanic for many years...most shops crap on the mechanics....stick your flat rate I will only work hourly, but the only way to make money is to kick out the middle man and work for yourself...by 2024 most good skilled mechanics will either retire or quit and no one is filling their shoes...you'll miss us when we're gone...Even top mechanics at BMW will never make $100,000 a year but sales associates do...it's not worth working for anyone but yourself....be good at what you do,be honest and make people pay you for your skills and cut up hands...

      It’s 2024 now and I’m a 24 year old ASE master tech making about $82k a year and working on getting my L1 and F1 ASE’s as that’ll increase my pay to $86k a year I work as a fleet mechanic and we have a union which is why the pay is “high” I have 6 years experience and my advise to anyone who really wants to be a mechanic is go to a fleet job usually better pay better benefits and easier less stressful job I’m not rich by any means but I live comfortable and I’m starting to enjoy my job again after leaving the dealership.

Also use knee pads, eye and ear protections and don't forget the 5 P's; proper-planning-prevents-pisspoor-performance. Seen a lot of guys crap out after 10 years from not following my plan.

    The only thing a team system means is they put 2-weak techs with three strong techs and it's a wash for them. I was one of the strong techs, that cost me about $20,000 a year when they did that. And then they say oh you don't want to be part of the team?! No not when you put me with some dumb ass and then they take my paycheck I don't.

    In 2017 if you want a good quality diagnostic tech and repair/maintenance mechanic that owns labscops and different scan tools with reprogramming hardware /software. You better be willing to pay them 80-100k a year. Starting out as a lube, tire, basic maintenance guy at 12 an hour flate rate and you have to buy your own tools with the cost of living is a joke. And that is just a little bit of the problem in this industry.

  • @ppap351
    @ppap351 5 лет назад +7

    I am interested in knowing where she obtained her information? This was a very poorly researched documentary. The tech shortage is the direct result of the dealership owner's greed. PERIOD. Instead of interviewing management or a rookie hourly tech, she should have talked to some of the senior level flat rate techs. The flat rate system benefits ONLY the dealership owners. She should have also asked why the dealerships don't adopt an hourly pay system like the rest of the world or any of the other technical professions. A new tech graduates a "for profit" tech school with $30k+ in student loan debt coupled with the cost of the tools so they can earn $11 an hour?
    Hey lady, the tech shortage can be resolved very easily... better pay, working conditions and benefits. Your solution to hire more women or educate the parents about the stigma associated with the profession is almost as laughable as the decision to hire you as a reporter for WGBH.

    My my my! This was 7 years ago. It's horribly worse now in the present, August 14,2024. Being in South Louisiana, only a few years ago you could go to an auto dealership and not see a NOW HIRING AUTO TECHNICIANS sign. Today you see NOW HIRING AUTO TECHNICIANS at every single one.

    At the end of this massive display of inordinate nonsense, she says 'starting salary is 40 grand and you'll work your way up to 80 grand" NOPE NOPE NOPE total fiction and I invite anyone else to prove me wrong here. She needs to support that blindly optimistic statement with factual evidence, and until that appears, it's NOT truth. Oh yes you'll work your way toward what you believe is upward based only on empty promises and desperate hope only to discover you fell for the bait and switch. If this career is so awesome and every tech really is banking 80 grand, then why is there a shortage? Not one word about breathing in polluted air and exposure to hazardous chemicals all day while struggling in a blazing hot malodorous filthy garage all summer and you'll really love how the ice/snow exacerbates the job misery all winter.

    This problem has been going on for over 20 years and nothing has or will be done about it, companies have been treating mechanics like crap for years and want us to do more and more with making crap pay and expect us to have the latest tools and skills. They keep saying the answer is young tech kids, most bail out within 2 years and can you blame them long hours/nights/weekends and Holidays. I started out working 3rd shift for 13 years with Wed/Thurs off, no one wants to work those hours, especially for what company's want to pay today, at least I was making $3 to $5 above the average for my area. Management is horrible and has been for the last 15+ years with people with little to no mechanical skills or knowledge trying to tell us how to do our job. Plus, mechanics talk we hear how companies treat their mechanics and which companies to stay away from. (a little hint- all the companies that are offering sign bonuses) because they can't keep anybody when the sign on is over. If you want to start to fix this problem first you would need to promote older mechanics into management and double the salary, bring back a real tool and boot allowance, not $250 that will barely get you a Snap-on screwdriver set.

    • @bigg4454
      @bigg4454 7 лет назад +2

      @Alex Rodriguez - Only thing that I mighta did wrong with was to compare what I got vs. what you guys (the reasonably successful ones) get these days. Why? I been it this field since 1973 and like I said it was 48k, I made in 1998. So there IS a big difference not to mention where you are employed. I came back to this stuff a couple years ago and now there's You Tube and what seems to be more awareness and concern about his field. I only wish there was more interaction "back in the day". The issues were rarely addressed back then. So I'll say this, you guys are on the right track bringin' this out in the open. In the end, I was doing something right because I went to a job I liked everyday in spite of workin' for certified dickheads and "conglomerate minded" ass kissin' retailers that do not support their young and up coming techs. The general public been takin' you guys for granted far too long.

Because your not going to get rich being a mechanic, it will have however, give you an honest days work for an honest days work that is very secure and a person coming in, age 20, fresh out of high school, will not be able to take your job, as in other fields or careers.

    The first thing you should do is quit lying about how much mechanics make. I was a union Ford triple Master gas and diesel mechanic. Hybrid and natural gas certified. I had my smog license brake license and lamp license. I made $34.65 an hour. That's nowhere near $120,000 a year!!! you should really quit lying to the young kids on how much money they're going to make. It's not a good way to start off a relationship.😢

    All you guys are in not on commission as a flat rate flagging tech. You guys are an hourly wage is the problem. It's up to you how much work you can get done in a 8 hour day and how much work you want to do. I flag on a average 15 hours a day in an 8 hour day with a 1 hour lunch. I am on time clock for 8 hours I get paid for all the work that I have done that for the day. If you are a flagging tech at a dealership. You are on commission not tied to the time clock. If you work on a car that pays 15 hours for that job and you take the full 15 hours to finish that job your not making any money. It's all about how fast and how aggressive and how determine you want to make money. I made that 35K back when I first started at Toyota out of school in 1995 as a flagging tech. I make way more money now with a different car line dealership. I bought tools as what was needed to do the specific job not buy all 10- 20K of tools all at once on a tool truck that's just stupid. I am still in this career as a flagging technician in a luxury car line. You make or break your own day for your pay. It's all up to you if you choose to be an hourly tech where you get paid by the time clock or be a commission flagging tech at the dealer and make lots of money. Most places have in shop tool boxes now days and besides If you want to save money there Sears craftsman and Harbor Freight if you want to save money in this career. Every trade now days require tools of some sort now.
