I spend about 1 hour researching each operating system and test driving it myself before my mum does. These videos take about 1 hour to record and 2-3 hours to edit. So you could say a normal OSFirstTimer video is a 5 hour process to make. The final rendered footage is usually 200 gigabytes which is then compressed to less than a gigabyte down to a 720p mp4 file and uploaded to youtube where it is further compressed.
If working on this channel was a full time job there would be a video every day

I had many acorns back in the day and it took me a long time to get used to not having that drag drop save on PC that your mum seemed to not like. The thing is, if you open a file, you navigate to it and click it, so you have the folder open anyway. So when you want to save, its already open there ready to be dragged and dropped into. You don't have the whole convoluted navigation system in the save dialog that you do these days, where it seemingly randomly changes what folder it thinks you should be in and you have to re-navigate where you want to save the thing.
The amount of drag and drop integration in riscos was revolutionary at the time, for example you could drag the save from one program into the window of another program, it would load the file in that program and you'd never need to save the inter mediatory file.
Ahhh the memories, thanks for this trip down memory lane :)

    • @TheZALGOisCOMING
      @TheZALGOisCOMING 10 лет назад

But that folder would only already be open if you're editing an existing doc, if you're creating a new one (or want to change the save folder) it adds unneccessary steps. Modern save dialogs have a default (my documents, my pictures, desktop...), and if you change it once (which is not complicated, you just start in computer or desktop and navigate to the save folder like you normally would), it remembers.

Anyone who went to school in the early 90s in the UK used Risc OS, it was the UK education standard platform back then. It is a bit quirky, but GUI standards were still developing then, and there was a lot of law-suits over "look and feel" etc. so developers did their bit to make their systems unique. It's a pretty nice OS when you get used to its drag-n-drop ways. It's still developed today and is actually compatible with the ARM based Raspberry Pi.

We always hear strange things. :P
At first I thought those inverted exclamation marks were i's and the apps were called iPaint, iDraw, et cetera, just like Apple's products.
"Push this out of the way." Noooooooo, not again!
In one of the Windows videos I remember her saying it's stupid to center a background, but in this operating system she says it's quite nice. :P

I used this back in the 90's. First on the A310 and later on the A3000 and A5000. One had a whopping 80MB IDE Hard drive. It was simple to use and no frills in my opinion. The BBC Basic V was easy to use, and programming was made alot easier by the SWI calls. I loved using it and spent many a happy hour on an Acorn. Thanks for sharing :)

Chroma Key can be fantastic but if you don't have a green screen it can be problematic. I currently stand against a white wall in my house to do the chroma key effects and you can tell the result is a lot worse than if I were to use a real greenscreen. Using a white wall is what makes me transparent rather than Opaque.

It *is* called the Desktop in RISC OS. In fact, if you're in a command line only mode, you type DESKTOP to go in to the Desktop. Pinboard is a separate program that allows you to put icons on the desktop background, and to have wallpaper, which you can't do by default. You can see that program at 04:07.
Icons running on the icon bar can be closed by middle-clicking on them, because middle button is the Menu button in RISC OS.
When you start using RISC OS you need a 3-button mouse and the knowledge that the use of the middle button to bring up menus is an integral part of the using the Desktop. (Why the trackball!?)
It's also useful to know how to use the right mouse button; that provides some handy features that are sadly missing from other GUIs like Windows to this day.

Acorn computers were _very_ popular in British schools until Win '95 came out - initially the BBC Micro (CLI - if you could find an emulator that would be almost as challenging as MS-DOS, but then again it had a built-in BBC BASIC interpreter so even if you couldn't do anything useful, you could write your first "Hello World" without needing any additional programs / editors) then the Archs (Acorn Archimedes range, notably the A3000, A3010, A3020, A4000 and A5000; eventually followed by the Risc PC - notable for having an expanding case: you could buy additional 'slices' and longer bolts to hold it all together).
The Task Manager briefly shown was very powerful - you could see at a glance how much system memory was being used for various purposes and even control how much memory applications and built-in features (e.g. the icon cache) used.
Another novel feature of the OS was the structure of applications - the other reason they have a pling (!) at the start is they're a modified folder tree. Shift double click and the application folder opens, which contains all the resources the application needs. !Boot (much abused by viruses) tells the OS what to do as soon as it sees the application (e.g. setting up file associations and icons), !Run is the main run file, !Sprites contains the sprites the application used (Sprites themselves were a novel format - they could contain multiple separate images within the same file, including low res and high res versions of the application icon), !Runimage is the main program itself.
Oh, and it was 32-bit. Back in 1988. Seven years before MS caught up. The computers could have been a big hit, but Acorn were quite small and got caught in the trap of only marketing to education. Still, one small bit of Acorn is alive and kicking - ARM. Originally Acorn RISC Machines, then Advanced RISC Machines, it designs chip cores but doesn't actually manufacture them - instead licensing them out to manufacturers.

Yes but with a white wall rather than a green screen. The technique is called chroma key and you can use any plain color to do it but green is the best followed by blue. Any other colour gives you a poor result which I tried to cover up as much as possible in this video.

RISC OS on your A5000 ran from ROM and couldn't be corrupted :) the !Boot folder did the work of loading bits and pieces not in the ROMs and holding shift bypassed it in case something went wrong. I think after 30+ years, it's about time Microsoft added drag saving from an application.
It's a lot easer than going through menus to get the correct directory (folder) where you want to save the file.
    I had an Acorn A5000.
The Desktop is the pinboard and the icon bar.
To enter the multitasking Desktop you would type *desktop

both virtualacorn and rpcemu runs fine on win7 (8 as well) and the same was true back in 2013...
if you really wanted to go hardcore in emulation, run virtual xp under 7, from that xp run winuae and start AmigaOS then run RiscOs from the Acorn Emulator (Arculator?) for AmigaOS:)
(you can add a bonus virtual linux between w7 and xp for maximizing the fun. also dont forget to run ShapeShifter, a MacOS emu in AmigaOS in the same time as you run RiscOS under AmigaOS - to showcase teh Amiga multYtaskin powah!:):)

I remember using this OS. Very chunky Acorn laptop with a greyscale display. You could play music with that Meistro program or whatever it's called, it even had a small selection of different voices. The pin board image did not save automatically even on the original Acorn, you had to save some kind of boot profile as I seem to recall.

    • @PoGGiE06
      @PoGGiE06 10 лет назад

they added the boot profile with Risc OS 3 I think ... it was a mixed blessing. Before that, there was no boot up, everything was held in ROM, and you turned the machine on, and it loaded instantly and never corrupted. Adding boot meant a startup time of several seconds, and the risc of the OS corrupting (although I think that only happened to me once. Unlike Windoze where it happens once ever few years, even on win 7).

The thing with the programs loading to the iconbar is simple: You just have one instance of a program running but you can handle a virtual limitless amount of documents with that, meaning that you just have ONE icon for say 20 open texts.
For having applications automatically started, try the !Configure application, although I admit that this might be too much for a first time use ;)
I still find it the most intuitive classic (stacking windows) GUI, and I really use many different ones.

Then type *Basic for BBC Basic
    *Time to display the time/date.
*DOS to use files using the Microsoft DOS filing system
*ADFS to use the Advanced Disc Filing System by Acorn that could have more files in a directory, file names longer than 8 characters etc than DOS OS.
*RMFS to uses files stored in the ROM.
Type *Roms to list some of the roms.
Type *Desktop to return to the RISC desktop.Remember that the OS is stored in ROM, so you can't get a virus or if you do then just format the hard drive and the computer will still run with no need to install the OS.

Most of the difficulties people face when trying to use RISC OS boil down to:
    a) People have become used to using 2-button mice. Even Windows 7/8 uses the 3rd button very rarely. A 3rd button that must be used all of the time feels odd.
    b) Modern OSes work through a program idiom. Run MS Word, select File->Open, that opens a file selection dialog, find the file. This is based around a file idiom. There are no file open dialogs. Just drag the file to the program to load and drag it away to save.

    I Love The Intro

Well Hello! I still use an Acorn RISC PC running RISC OS 4. I use it mostly now for music although I still do some of my art with it. I run a sequencer program called Melidi and the Sibelius 7 notation software in the machine it was written for. Guess what? It's all NEVER gone wrong, NEVER locks up, it NEVER crashes and is faster than the modern PC I am forced to use. Thanks to the philosophy behind how it was all thought up, I can still transfer files across from that machine to the modern PC or Laptop. And yes, you guessed it, I do that by using a Floppy Disc Drive! This system would have been a real competitor for the Big Boys but why it didn't work out like that is another story.

If it weren't for this video, I would still not know how to close applications running on RiscOS (on my Pi Zero). At first I didn't realize I was dealing with the same system Diana tried!

animesaint :3 I often wondered why I stopped... Back on them now, though :) sooo much fun and they just work and fast. Sure, there's no photoshop, apache2 distro or minecraft, but it will never be unusable due to a windows/mac/linux or any virus! When I moved to a PC, I found the concept of 'reinstalling your operating system' really alien... Why would you need to do that... Windows.

A trackball is more ergonomic (better for you). And no I am not saying "economic" as in price.

    Awesome channel idea, love it!
If you take requests, could you look at Plan 9/Inferno?

Started out being very interested. The hosts manic behavior made me stop watching after 9 minutes though and I think I hung on rather well.

Yeah but he's a 19 year old kid who cant contain his enthusiasm for technology, and that should be applauded and supported.
And his mum is a great side kick in this duo. With a little spit and polish this channel could be quite fun and interesting.
I think that the host should back off a bit more and not take over so much of what the mum does, talk slower and clearer, and not just look at Operatingsystems.
If they broadened this to a channel that looked at UX/UI design of software in general this could be a real fun hit.

I really like these vids. Don't stop now whatever you do. Do me a big favour and tell me, is it possible to run the newest acorn that runs on a rasberrypi on any computer as a o.s. desktop.?? please make a video on the newest one . i would like to see Risc o.s. Your mum and you are great at these videos.

Please DO link to the 'History of RISC OS' Wiki. Acorn released its first GUI in 1986, the iconbar, etc. appearing a year later. Their earlier, but technically superior, ARX OS was delayed into extinction. P.S. Pinboard runs 'on' the desktop, and can be quit it in the Tasks window.

Desktop sounds like it's in relation to the pinboard and the taskbar where as the pinboard is referring to the thing all those icons are pinned to. Right?

I thought each computer had a different OS and for a different OS you needed a different PC. I didn't realize this until I was 10, so you're not alone.

I think you need to consider NeXTSTEP too when considering who came up with the iconbar / taskbar
