Wait, the author has an in world explanation for a film noir inner monologue, with a damn good reason that makes sense?
Dang.
That might well be a big part of the reason he wrote the book.
@@MrfnordTim or it could be the author, being a scientist, read the same authors my adoptive father read (my da being an engineer before he passed).
Heavy on the world building, where the world and the plot drove the story vs the characters. And the world would have thorough detail.
The authors also had a trend where you could introduce one thing like this kiln'ing process, and then try to spiral out all of the impacts that could result and make the world seem more lived in and organic.
"Why wouldn't someone who is a PI take his clones and use them for the scary stuff, plus include a black box for data recovery?"
@@Gauldame and
Just leaving my sacrifice for the algorithm. Great video!
Most noir authors imply that what your reading is the main character narrating events that have already happened (like in a journal or case file) so it's not that they don't have a logically sound reason for the narration it's that he just tells you exactly what it is.
I'm liking these "interesting books I want to talk about" videos.
Absolutely! A patreon series he might want to do is a book club forum. That could be cool
I agree, these videos are a lot more interesting than the...'popular' books.
Same! It's great to see our beautiful reviewer so excited.
“Humanity’s first thought at a new piece of tech is ‘can i fuck it?’”
Ngl, that was my first thought.
(Btw, thank you for supporting trans people. I came out to my mom recently, she’s supportive, but your support of trans people got me thru some hard times)
Great news on coming out :) Amazing :)
ex-terf here -i apologise for all the ignorant people you have to deal with
-i'm glad your mum isn't one of them.
I figure humanity's first thought is "can I kill something with it", then sex, then "how is this entertaining"
@@kyta31 ngl My first thought was how they deal with a golem going out and killing someone. Since it won't last long enough to feel repercussions, do the originals get held liable? These are the things I get stuck on XD
Congratulations!
"Misplaced another of his dittos"
Those pokemon can be hard to keep track of.
Okay that “green model” version of Dom is about to haunt my nightmares
But the ivory one haunts other kinds of dreams
Elf Dom.
It seems your “interesting books you want to talk about” videos are becoming “books I want to read a lot” videos 😂😂😂
When I first heard "Ditto" I first thought of pokemon... Then I found out that ditto is an actual word on the english language... The more you know I guess. (I'm not a native english speaker.)
True🤣
Ditto
English has this habit of randomly mugging other languages for grammar and vocabulary, it makes it awkward to say the least.
I am and I still wasn’t sure what they meant at first lol
I am a native born english speaker, and I thought the same thing.
It might just be we're nerds 🤣
It seems that Dom is determined to fill up our shopping carts with literary recommendations.
Wait... is that bad?
@@Fenomka No, just making an observation.
My wishlist does run over, it's true.
Library!
My shopping cart for books is unfillable
"Yes, the one that was turned into the Kevin Costner movie, but that wasn't his fault!" A few seconds in, and I'm already laughing.
So first of all, it was Brin's idea to hand The Postman to Costner (who not only played the lead role but also directed and produced the film). Second, from what I know of Brin, he's pretty far right politically and probably liked the film just fine.
I'll have to look for the "Lost in Adaptation" episode after this.
Also, I didn't know that about Brin's politics. I didn't get that from reading _The Postman_ but maybe that's just my filter.
(I was lucky enough to have read it in its original form, a two-parter in _Asimov's_ .)
@@dwc1964 I didn't get that from the movie either. But when I watched The Postman I was still pretty young and that was a long time ago. I may have missed some stuff.
@@Squossifrage The Postman was about how preppers are bad and government is good and necessary. Not sure how you would get rightwing politics from that one.
I have no idea what this is, but here's a comment for the algorithm and Dom's smooth narrating.
And I am answering to also protect Dom’s smooth voice from the algorithm.
Hi, I too wish to participate in this.
Hello, I too would like to contribute to engagement in Doms' comment section 😁
Same
It is a lovely thing to protect from the algorithm yes
Every time I see a world like this my number one thought is "why do they have to feel pain?" like just don't give the human copies that aren't treated as humans and dissolve in a day pain sensors. why do they need pain sensors. its just mean at this point. they don't have functional organs, why do they need to feel pain?
Pain( and the fear of pain) also heavily shapes the way we act and react to things- a ditto without pain might end up being too careless/ not be able to tell when it has been wounded/needs to retreat to be useful. After all, you want a functional copy of yourself, not a weird zombie.
@@samiraansari5686 then give them dulled pain sensors, or the ability to feel pressure and heat but not pain. There's real people who don't have the ability to feel pain, and they aren't weird zombies they're just people who don't get pain signals. I just feel like they should at least have the ability to NOT give them pain signals, especially in a society where seriously hurting a ditto only gets you a slap on the wrist while the original person then has to reabsorb those potentially traumatizing memories
@@sassycassyg Yes, there are, but those people )especially as children) often end up injured and have to be find other methods to avoid damage.
@@samiraansari5686 Yes, but they have already learned these things because they are copies of people. Like a person doesn’t need to feel pain repeatedly to avoid something the dittos avoiding sth harmful would also just be an instinct.
I am of the firm belief that anything can be enhanced by adding clones, so I’m all ears.

They can outlive the originals - so we're back into book version "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" then.
I can see watching your latest reviews of things you actually like is going to get expensive. I've already bought Raybearer, and now I've picked up this one. Oddly, neither "50 Shades of Grey" or "Twilight" holds the same appeal.
That's where my mind went too - private eyes, temporary copies, speculative fiction social issues...
That's what I was thinking. This has Roger Rabbit vibes. Possibly one took inspiration from the other? Maybe?
So this is what that Doctor Who "The Flesh" ep was inspired by.
You know it's a good video when it's not even a full minute and you are in equal parts intrigued and confused
Hey Google, create new wishlist titled: Books Dom Recommended
Send in the Clones!
Seriously, jokes aside thank you for sending us good reads for our shopping carts.
i really appreciate that the 'interesting books' you talk about are you know ACTUALLY interesting
Nobody's going to judge you, Dom, for how you look. You look amazing.
Nobody worth his time, at the very least :P
This sounds like a truly interesting plot.
Also loving the ending song!
Oh! David Brin was a big deal in my house when I was a teenager! Sadly I wasn't reading many books myself at the time, but I remember lively conversations at the dinner table between my siblings and my parents about Uplift and Kiln people. Those were good times. :)
I didn't even need to hear the recommendation, I added this book to my to read list just based on the video title, but I watched the video all the way through to feed the algorithm.
A true comrade. :)
@@ayeletarmon686 We all must do our part.
I appreciated the book being described as "chonky". And absolutely lost it during the filk of Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel that started playing during the end credits while I was writing this comment.
These "ditto" golems sound remarkably like the toon copies that appeared in the original novel version of Who Censored Roger Rabbit? They even fall apart in roughly the same way.
Indeed, although the autonomy/thoughts/rights or lack thereof of the doubles in Who Censored Roger Rabbit? are never really touched upon. It's actually kind of odd that this concept isn't more widespread in speculative fiction: it's interesting, and there are clearly more angles to be explored.
@@KyleRayner12 You may want to look at Noah Caldwell-Gervais's review of Soma. That game really goes in depth on exactly that sort of thing.
@@Lazarus1095 Noted, although I'm not exactly a gamer. Thanks for the recommendation.
Every time you swear, I am reminded of how much I enjoy the sound of you swearing. Exceedingly pleasant.
The plot vaguely reminds me of The Who Censored Roger Rabbit plot with the sentient clones with time limits.
This sounds pretty cool, I’ll have to check it out sometime
I always say that I need two of me, and this is kind of the exact thing i was thinking of. 4 of me to go out and do things, all return to one location and join back together at the end of the night. If only it were reality. I could be doing 3 jobs to earn more moony and one to organize and clean/make crafts for selling. alas, I am but only me.
The "Ditto ditto ditto" is going to be stuck in my head all day, and will come back every Hanukkah. 😂
Love the concept of clones being used in a detective story, putting sci-fi ideas within a procedural is my jam. This goes to my to-be-read pile. As always thanks Dom for a great recommendations :)
Really appreciate that you included a short video with one of your cats to accommodate for the lack of outtakes.
I squeed so loud I scared the cats. So excited for a new Dominic video!
I’ve actually met David Brin, and he’s super cool and chill in person!
Love the outro song. Why do I feel like it's going to be playing in my head for DAYS
Just wanted to tell the algorithm that I’m really enjoying these “books Dom actually likes” videos.
Man, if dittos take comfort in returning to their master copy's consciousness, I feel sorry for the ones cloned to handle the original's affairs because they're dying; they are created to outlive their template.
I'm loving these books you enjoy videos, Dom! Keep up the good work! :)
Not having any bloopers is such a casual flex, I'm impressed
Sounds like an Awesome book. Thank you for the suggestion.
This was a fun one. I thought it was the last non-licensed novel he'd written to date, but apparently he's written a couple other stand-alone novels this century. Still no new Uplift novel, though. :-(
I take these kinds of books and stories as evidence that every story has NOT, in fact, been told. That even a story that follows a certain number of tropes or cliches can still be a unique experience.
This kind of reminds me of the "Quick Clones" from the Men in Black animated series
I do love the recommendations for stories I might never have found by myself.
Dr Brin is so fascinating to listen to if anyone ever has a chance
Omg I've never heard of anyone else who's ever read or heard of this book!
I've never been so confused by the plot of a book and I'm totally here for it.
This book would make a super interesting idea for a video game with a mystery and puzzle solving elements. Each ditto you use has a limited time to uncover bits and you have to either get it back to base or retrieve the black box to progress. Different varieties of clone could access areas encouraging you to use each one or level up skills to use better clones. I'd play that kind of game happily.
Anyone else getting "who censored Rodger rabbit" vibes when he said they could outlive the original by about a day?
I have literally never been this early in my entire life
So when are we getting a vid covering the postman and it's "adaptation"
Hopefully never.
I'd really like that!
@@jimcalhoun361 Saying that just makes me more curious, even if I will regret checking it up.
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 I was happy when the announced production of the movie. The book was a great story, a little dated now, that is actually applicable in many ways to what has happened over the last year. What we actually got though is a film that I would really hate to have included in even the 'in name only' category.
@@jimcalhoun361 It was extremely timely in the '80s, felt really dated in the '90s and '00s, but has kinda come back around in some very unsettling ways.
I feel the same way about _The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte_
RUclips algorithm!
And also, wow, this book sounds just like my cup of tea, thanks Mr. Noble!
P.S. Amazing ending song and cat cuddling xD
Love this kind of "let me tell you about this great book" video, but I can't finish them because I always want to read the book.
This sounds like a great read - you do an excellent job of explaining the book without spoiling it at all!
One question I'm always left with when it comes to "making clones of myself to do things I don't want to do" plots: If the clone is of _you,_ with your same mind and thought processes and everything, and you don't want to do the task... what happens if the clone _also_ doesn't want to do it?
I can't be the only one who thought of book version Roger Rabbit when he mentioned dittos outliving their humans by a day
That premise actually sounds interesting. I haven't been into science fiction books for a while, but if the noir detective bit isn't too cliché I might give this one a shot.
"Purple Wage" from Philip Jose Farmer's short story "The Riders of the Purple Wage." [Steve Rogers I got that.gif]
What?! No shout out to Sarah from Pushing Up Roses? That's uncalled for, Dom.

The Detective Conan Soundtrack in the background... Aaah the memories
"books I want to talk about"= Dom's amazing book recommendations
Haven't read this one but have liked some of Brin's other stuff so might have to check this out.
I don't read a whole lot of sci-fi, but you've piqued my interest with this one. Thanks for the recommendation!
I read Brin's "Otherness" in high school, I have REALLY got to read more of his books. Thanks for the heads up on this one.
I always stay for the bloopers, but I was not at all disappointed by the cat taking over :D
Wow! This sounds exactly like my kind of book!
I'm loving these "Books Dom likes" reviews. We seem to have similar tastes in books (cough*discword*cough) so I'm really fining some great books through these.
(You're rocking the Sokka ponytail, btw. XD )
I love everything about The Dom reviews, though the kitty outtakes might be my favorites.
I'd love to see Dominic review the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. I know it's a longshot away but I find the characters embedded in the "world of the rich" and the nostalgic elements of Asian culture very intriguing.
This definitely helps me decide what I will and won’t read
This is giving me flashbacks to my vocaloid days and I swear there is a song about something like this, except the clones don't disappear. Basically about a girl who clones herself because she's lazy, except since her clothes do all her learning and work, they become "better" than her and the question at the end is "which one of us is fake?"
I'm definitely liking Dominic talking about books he likes. I've been avoiding the romances because they just depress me, but talking about good sci-fi? More please.
Brings new meaning to the thought that my brother’s worth 5 people to his boss...
At 4:00 you went straight from talking about ivories to talking about non-human models (t-rex, weasels) and it took me a moment to realise you'd changed topic... I think?
_Begun the Clone Wars have._
Kiln People sounded right up my alley and so far I'm really enjoying it. I can't resist sci-fi with an interesting world.
I'll gladly take video clips of Sir Terry (or Whisp) as a substitution for bloopers any day! Sir Terry's cat cuteness will give my weekend a great start! 😻😻😻😻
This is way up my alley! Thanks Dom
I have to admit I would jump on this in a second to help me finish my coursework. I could even imagine sending a clone to a different class that takes place at the same time and taking notes on the lecture.
What a genius setting for a noir novel. Brin is so clever. I love the Uplift novels too.
The “pleasure model” dom had me ROLLING; thank you for that
I'm so glad you did this video! I've been trying to remember this book title for a while now, but couldn't recall enough info to search with. When I saw/heard the word "dittos", I knew this was the book I had been thinking of. Oddly enough, "ditto" is not an uncommon word in my personal vocabulary, but it didn't ring a bell until I saw it in plural.
man these videos are really great for finding books to read, thank you for making them!
More of these please Dominic!
your videos recently have added so many books to my holiday reading list!
Love your videos. They keep me sane during these weird times we’re living in.
Yay! Yet another good sounding book I've never heard of before!!
I somehow got my hands on one of Brin's novels a few years back (Sundiver), and I absolutely adored the way he wrote. I managed to get my hands on a copy of The Postman recently, I'll add this one to my list to look for in bookstores
I really love your book reviews! Like i always get excited because i discovered something that i might be interested in reading because of you!
Yep! This book sounds right up my alley! Love Sci-fi and Noir
I'm really loving this new Sci-Fi recommendations, keep up the good work!

wow this seems like a really interesting premise backed up with a well thought out world/culture/society! that's a rare combo (well.... at least among books I come across 😅) that seems well worth checking out!!
