The only thing I'd hope for in the R6 III is the pre-capture mode of the R1/R5 II. The pre-capture on the R6 II isn't very good if you want to shoot RAW! But the 30 fps is a downgrade from the R6 II! Therefore I hope I can resist the temptation to buy the new R6 III and keep my R6 II. This camera can do more than I probably ever will need!

I love the articulating screen , as a portrait photographer it has been a game changer. I hope canon don't start to forget that cameras are photo first and video after, I know most of your viewers are video centric so this statement may be received with some hostility😊 but I think the screen is perfect as it is now. Just hope they would have given it a to mode LCD screen so I don't have so much going on in the view finder.
Cameras are whatever you need them to be first. Not all are photo first. Not all are video first. And depending on the shooter and their preferences, this can change.
R6 ii is already the fastest non-stacked sensor out there. Considering that the stacked or partially stacked sensors loss a stop or two of DR, I prefer my R6 ii. I wish Canon gives us 4k120 though.
I know many people like to have that flip out screen - but as a sports photographer, I really never use the screen at all especially out in the field and I think that's what the R1 is used for the most. I never review photos on the screen either as I'm usually out in the field in full sunlight and would rather look at my pics right in the viewfinder where I can see the full colours and brightness. They could remove the LCD screen altogether and I wouldn't miss it at all. If you're using the R1 as a Vlogger or to produce videos, I think you might have the wrong camera. Maybe the R5II would have some better use for the flip out screen, but I honestly don't think it's missed in the R1, not for sports which is what that camera does best.
The rear display and all those touch AF and other programing features to display on that display, and that includes all the video functions, is priced into the value of the camera. Without the rear display, it's not worth the price you paid for it. And many sporting events photogs take other pictures not simply of the "event" itself. Photos of athletes are taken in many other settings besides during the "Event". Not many athletes would even care to peep a photo through your micro EVF. And not many sports photogs that I know personally would care to hand their camera to a subject or client to peep an image through the EVF. In addition there are many "sports" photographers that choose to use their Canon R5 as they did the 5D.
I almost never use it for shooting sports weddings events. For me shooting a processional with the evf causes perspective issues which I can quickly correct shooting traditionally. Also when I see spirts shooters taking fast paced AFTER the event capturing hugs, player conversations etc. They are shooting traditionally.

I shoot the R6 mk ii currently. The screen/viewfinder resolution & quality are important, but the stacked sensor with improved auto focus, especially with a usable pre shoot, would be my biggest interest. And possibly full 14 bit raw with electronic shutter.

There’s 3 things it must have for me to upgrade. Stacked sensor, pre-shooting and C-Log2. If any of those are missing, forget it However, it would make sense if they stuck with C-Log 3 if it’s the same stacked sensor from the R3. Canon has said that sensor isn’t capable of the DR C-Log2 gives, which is BS
Thanks, Simon - This is good news! About the 30 fps continuous shooting: Maybe this time its 14bit instead of 12bit (12bit as in the R6 II) Would make sense.
Perhaps, but it's a capability that only recently made its way to stills hybrid cameras. Perhaps its says something about the range of the sensor, its for high end cameras, or maybe in a later firmware...
and this won't have global shutter so that might come down the line ikn R6v or something, because right now I shoot events and when shooting dancers etc, I'm getting 5 fingers merging into one and the photos look crap and I'm shooting at around 1/200 and can't really go to HSS as I'll lose light.
and some reviewers complained about DR on R5ii, so canon should see what went wrong with that and don't make the same mistake on R6ii. Any complaints or omissions on R5ii should be fixed by R6iii. And the tilt screen is a gimic, flippy does the job.
Depends... in video, the dynamic range is much better. Architecturally, the R5 II should have less noise at high ISO. That's the whole point of moving the circuitry to the back side of the photo site.... Not sure what happened here.
The stacked sensor prevented any increases in DR…. but clog2 let you use more of the available DR, which is why it seems it got better on the video side.
I am fully aware that every innovation is indeed innovation, though the R6 II is already so great, it is hard to find actual subject of photography where that camera acts like a limiting factor.
I can do without eye-control AF. But if Canon wants to dominate the market, they should put the "smart controller" in the 5,6,&7 series. There is no focus controller that comes close to the smart controller. Amazing feature on the R1 and R3.
Well, it would make sense for the R6 to be made compatible with the R52 grips, including the cooling grip and that would make it a much more practical video camera too because it’s also crunching roughly half the data to produce video so he would probably make it a lot more reliable as a video camera for long form recording.
Along with everything else you mentioned as spec for the R6 Mark III, C-Log 2 would knock it out of the park and go very nicely with a Full HDMI port for video! 😊 I will be pissed if it gets the New Flip Tilt screen as the R5 II I just bought should have had it for the price I paid! 😢
As exciting as this is James, I am more interested in the R7 replacement. The tilt screen like the a7r5 seems strange... that the R63 would get it and the R52 didn't? Seems to weird to me.
@ yes I’m also waiting for the R7 replacement and is why I bought a used R6 Mark II as a back up for my R5 Mark II saving money for the R7 II in the future. Thanks ☺️
I have just bought an R6ii at a greatly discounted price so I expect the R6 iii to arrive fairly soon. Do I care ... no ...as having tried the sensor in the R6 ii and knowing what my R5 Mk 1 was like for noise (having had one for 3 years) the R6 ii is a brilliant camera and sensor combo. The low light performance and focus improvements over my older R5 made me buy it. If I want another R5 I will wait until the R5 ii is about to be replaced as new prices are crazy and the new model is often not in the real world much if any better than the older model for most shooters. The law of diminishing returns seems to be coming in massively with cameras now.
I have the MK1. The only thing I see as worth upgrading to is a better EVF. If the MK3 has one with more resolution like the R5, I'll be willing to upgrade. Otherwise, the MK1 works perfectly for me. Greetings and happy holidays.
Interesting my upgrade is next month I’ve been using the “R” since day one good camera but looking at all the changes in the last 4 1/2 years has been crazy good and the R6III sounds good but I’ve been eyeing the R5II for my upgrade
If these specs are accurate, the R6 III looks to be a great camera for the price or even an increased price of a few hundred dollars. I would have liked the tilt/flip screen on my R5 II, but that isn't a deal breaker. The R6 III will be a nice step into full frame mirrorless for photographers still shooting with a DSLR not wanting to break the bank for an R5 II. Thanks, Simon! Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
Hey Simon correct me if I am wrong but didn't the flippy screen debut on the 60D and dual pixel auto focus debut on the 70D. The 7D, 5D & 1D never got the flippy screen, and didn't get dual pixel AF until after the high volume 📷 s did. So, this like business as usual at Canon 🤔
How many years ago was Canon's last CP+ introduction of a stills / hybrid camera? I've only been a Canon shooter for six years, but I don't remember one. Maybe I missed it. Or maybe the tradition is over.
Help me figure this out...I love shooting video. Most of the time...97% of time Im shooting muay thai on the R6 Mark II. I have bad eyesite and prefer using the evf when shooting video. Im on the fence for an upgrade because I want to shoot longer video when recording muay thai training and muay thai matches. Should I get the R5 MarkII for the autofocus for the evf? Im hoping they make an update for the evf autofocus when recording video. Or should I get the C80 and get a large external monitor. Is there any rumors for the R5MARKII having evf auto focus for videography?
As a longtime Canon user who just recently switched jobs and bought a Panasonic S5iix with a Sigma 28-105 f2.8, I can say I’m going to likely stick with Panasonic going forward. Too much bang for your buck, open gate 6k is a godsend for deliverables, excellent log footage and color science. Disappointed in Canon dragging its feet to third party lenses with the R mount.
Cameras like computers are outdated after you buy them. Then comes along a new and shiny one. They left out the add ons on the R5II on purpose. Will ppl regret their R5II purchase?
I feel like the r6 mark iii is going to be a very different camera, its going to be a bit of a test bed for some of the new tech that has been in development. However I would definitely say that the R5 and R1 where probably finalised way before some of this stuff was readily available and tested and thats why those cameras didn't get some of the upgrades... The one thing I will say is that, putting all this new tech stuff in, could make the price significant, but I will 100% be keeping my eyes on this camera, It could be absolutely fantastic.

Hi Simon, clearly a fully stacked sensor will be a better class than a partially-stacked sensor, which shouldn't even surprise Nikon ;-) Regarding potentially outshining the R5ii, I remain pretty zen .. I would have loved the R5ii to get the patented tilted EVF (when shooting as low as possible), but I'm only exceptionally using the LCD for shooting. Seems clear to me Canon didn't want to risk any potential reliability issues with the new LCD movements on the workhorses like the R1 & R5ii.
Nice job on the presentation, Simon. I thought, though, it might be something to pique my interest…but not that revolutionary at all. Nice incremental upgrade though. Excellent upgrade for RP users, though; or those not in the Canon interchangeable lens market right now. Merry Christmas to you and yours! :)
I don't know much about the science of high iso and noise, but its 2024 going into 2025, is there technically a way that noise and grain can be removed by the sensor of whatever (and I don't mean in camera noise reduction), but that you can shoot at 6400 and have a clear as day, absolutely sharp, zero noise image in jpeg or raw, because of some advancement in technology of the cameras. Because it seems the cameras have peaked now and Manny said the same thing and there's still no security features, because if no one steals cameras then no one is replacing them and camera companies need those thefts .
In simple terms no. There is no technical means to remove noise. Noise is present in every image you take even at low ISO, it is just that at low ISO there is significantly more S/N.
A stacked sensor, all things being equal, should produce less noise than a traditional sensor, but the Nikon Z6 III and R5 II have shown otherwise... Without knowing the sensor architecture, its hard to know why, but I sense the electron well isn't as deep or they did not expand the light capturing surface of the photo site...
Canon’s only camera that doesn’t overheat for video is the R5C and it has terrible battery life and no Clog-2. Can we just get something like the FX3 or A7SIII that is reliable for video.
I'm on the bubble and waiting to see how the R6 MkIII shakes out. I presently have the MkII and MKI (which I absolutely love despite the occasional overheating in video). I'm planning for one camera purchase in 2025 being either the R5 MkII or the R6 MkIII. If Canon did all that you listed AND upped the resolution to 30/33 mega pickles () with the inclusion of CLOG2 being icing on the cake, it would literally spank the competition and certainly make my decision easier. It would also be nice if they'd release an 85mm f1.4 akin to their recent 55mm and 35mm at R6MkIII launch. Thanks Simon for all that you do with this useful and informative channel. All the best this holiday season to you and yours!
be interesting to see if Canon will release a C-LOG 2.5 so to speak .. a new profile that improves the noise situ with CLOG3, but isn't quite as good as CLOG2. be a good time for Canon to get clever with the next R6 release
Somehow the r5c has a clog3 that has a 13.5 stops sensor, this is kind of clog 2.5. Every thing keeps pushing me to R5C. It's got log, dual slots, clog2 in Raw, a Fan, but will I ever use 8K Raw? It's still missing clog2 in mp4. But thanks to Sony we get slog3 in every release. I now have 2 Sony's that can do 10 bit 422 slog3. and they are 15 stop sensors. That's what Canon needs to aim for. Unfortunately the r5ii came in almost 3 grand too much (In Canada) to compete and you still need Grip fan.
Thank you! Wow, looking like a great camera! I have the original R6 and I was holding out for R6 mk iii and decided not to get R5 mk ii just because I think the price to value ratio will be better in the R6 mk iii. If specs hold true and depending on the price Canan will release it at (concerned about tanking $Can now below 0.70) I think this will be a great camera. A little sad to see the resolutionat 24 mega pickels but hey, can't ahve it all :).
Probably dropping to 30fps but full 14-bit. The R6 Mark II shoots at 40fps, but the image goes to 12-bit, rather than the 14-bit it gets when using the mechanical shutter.
It won't outshine the R5 Mk II with only 24 mp. I'm a small bird photographer. Cropability is super important. By all accounts though, the R6 Mk II is a fantastic camera for just about everything else, and I'm sure the Mk III will be too.

I'm thinking about things in a different way than I did before I started watching your channel. For instance, I'm much more aware of Canon's development cycle, but also their forward vision. I remember in the past people saying that Canon doesn't innovate - but they come out with a perfected version of what the other companies are doing. That sounded good at the time. But more and more, the others are flipping the script, and the appearance is that Canon is just lagging behind in the technology war. But I just realized that the biggest thing is that they just don't seem to understand perception. Honestly, the LCD in the R1 may wind up being superior to the R6iii (probably will be), but the PERCEPTION of a lower-tier camera having an OLED vari-angle screen when the recently-released flagship doesn't? It makes their "flagship" seem like less and less of a flagship.
For what I shoot (wildlife, and the occasional sports), all for fun/hobby, my R6 Mk II is great, the features of the R6 Mk III aren't enough for me to upgrade. If I buy another camera in 2025 it'll be the R5 MK ii, for the ability to crop, pre-shooting, and the almost non-existent rolling shutter. I'm fortunate to have the 1 Dx, 1 Dx Mk ii, R7, and R6 Mk ii....so I'm not 100% yet on whether I'll even get another camera in 2025.
I would prefer to have/see a Nikon Z8 with a native 24mpix sensor and uncrippled firmware. Focus stacking, 5-axis internal ibis, etc. A true *native* mid to pro range 24mp class successor to the D5 and D750. That would end all the pointless debates in a hurry.
I do not understand canons logic, give the mkiii a stacked sensor and CF express card and reduce the maximum frame rate from 40 frames per second to 30 frames per second
So by March the R6iii will be in the shop? Nah. I think the R7 ii will be out before the next R5/6. The R6 is not in the same class as the R5. It is an alternative to the R1/R3.
Simon, All things considered this is a more-than-decent upgrade over it's predecesor. But I'm imagining the whining beginning to crescendo. "Deal breaker!" I hear shouted from the rafters. Realistically, an adult-sized HDMI port? Praise the Lord. Sure, they should have upgraded the guts to a CFExpress 4/PCI 4 card-reader/bus. And what? No 32-bit float audio? I guess we'll have to wait for the Sony A7 V for those. (Just kidding.) But someone has got to be first with upgrading the data paths.
Agreed. I love the 30mp sensor in my 5D4. If that sensor was in the R6(i,ii,iii) I would be more inclined to make the switch over. However, I still don't like the fake feeling of the EVF, compared to a mirrored VF.
Hmmmm...why R6m3 would that just make us R5M2 buys angry? I mean I waited so long for the R5M2, then a R6m3 at a cheaper prince...hmmmmm...pretty much makes me decide the R5m2 will be my last Canon last me till I'm 6 ft under. If R6m3 is a success...why buy the R5m2...the consumer pie is only so big as afar as us old farts. But maybe Canon will make up for us old people with new youngings so maybe that's a good market....make more money by selling more cheaper cameras and less money by selling expensive cameras....will I guess the bean counters have figured it all out...profit is king regardless of how one gets there. this was a good video, didn't care for the R4 one.
Clog2 should be standard for future Canon full frame mirrorless cameras moving forward. Not having Clog2 would be the dealbreaker for me.
honestly makes it not that much of an upgrade for video shooters.
It's like getting your first glasses after years not saying I don't need glasses...
If it's 24 megapixel stacked, it could possibly be the same sensor/similar as the c80 / c400. So I would expect clog2 would be a no brainer.
Ideally it should have all iterations of it, just like how Sony’s have slog 1-3 on its cameras even if you’re only gonna use slog3.

That's possible Marcel. I don't get too carried away with leaks. It could still do 40 fps, but have the 30 fps at a different specs level...
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I have no problem shooting with 30 fps, still very fast!👍
no c-log2 would be a huge disapointment for a lot
Perhaps, but it's a capability that only recently made its way to stills hybrid cameras. Perhaps its says something about the range of the sensor, its for high end cameras, or maybe in a later firmware...
I will be a bit jealous about that screen and the 30 fps but I still love my R5
What about focus staking with flash? Would be a nice feature for macro photography. I think only the R3 and R5 II have this feature.
and this won't have global shutter so that might come down the line ikn R6v or something, because right now I shoot events and when shooting dancers etc, I'm getting 5 fingers merging into one and the photos look crap and I'm shooting at around 1/200 and can't really go to HSS as I'll lose light.
Get a sony a9 maybe?
and some reviewers complained about DR on R5ii, so canon should see what went wrong with that and don't make the same mistake on R6ii.
Its far more of a big update compared to the MK1, but less so against the MK2
I can do without eye-control AF. But if Canon wants to dominate the market, they should put the "smart controller" in the 5,6,&7 series. There is no focus controller that comes close to the smart controller. Amazing feature on the R1 and R3.
Clog 2 omission is the only miss! SOOO close
I feel like it needs this feature just to match the other cameras on a shoot
Thanks ☺️
As Mk1 owner the only update I’m looking for is clog 2 and slightly higher megapixels. If not I’m just going to get a R5 used for cheaper.
Will wait until I see it. However, happy I did not get the R5II (yet).
R3iii specs sound cool and promising for the R7ii
It does sound cool, but the R7 is the camera I am most interested in.
Very interesting Simon, Have a safe and happy Christmas!
Thanks! I hope you and your loved ones have a great Christmas.
I have the R6ii and there doesn’t seem to be any upgrade the photo or video quality so I wouldn’t upgrade.
Same here. I just wish Canon would add the ability to save settings to an sd card for the R6 II.
No raw no Log2 … that is a bummer! Why is it so hard for Canon to make something like the fx3?
I have the MK1. The only thing I see as worth upgrading to is a better EVF. If the MK3 has one with more resolution like the R5, I'll be willing to upgrade. Otherwise, the MK1 works perfectly for me. Greetings and happy holidays.
Interesting my upgrade is next month I’ve been using the “R” since day one good camera but looking at all the changes in the last 4 1/2 years has been crazy good and the R6III sounds good but I’ve been eyeing the R5II for my upgrade
for what I do now (real estate photos) not a big deal but for what I want to do going forward it's massive!
Instead of another camera, I would have preferred a set of sigma fullframe lenses.
More and more im thinking to switch to sony
Hey Simon correct me if I am wrong but didn't the flippy screen debut on the 60D and dual pixel auto focus debut on the 70D. The 7D, 5D & 1D never got the flippy screen, and didn't get dual pixel AF until after the high volume 📷 s did. So, this like business as usual at Canon 🤔
well, retooling a production line is hugely expensive so might make sense to introduce feature X on the next Mk I, II or III line.
So does this basically make the R3 obsolete? If so I’m hoping for some major price jobs (hopefully in the $2000s on the used market)
I have those lenses already. Crap! Well they are Excellent!
I don't suspect we will see this price for very long. I have the 100-500 only.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Got the 100-500mm and sold the 100-400mm. Then got the 200-800mm. Then bought the 15-35mm and 85mm f/1.2. Then rebought the 100-400mm. Sold the R50, R7 and R6 and got the R6II with extra cash. Then Bought the R5II and rebought the R50 because of two RUclips Creators that Live in Miami were Loving my R10 and RF-S & EF-S Glass that I was loaning and I needed a smaller backup camera. Cheers!
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker nice! Which filters can you recommand?
Id like an update on my R6m2 that gives me c-log 2
Hope they release that update after launch of R6m3
When is R6 mk iv due.....
All I want is clog 2, and a more weather resistant body similar to the r5. The Nikon z6iii has a weather sealed body, why not the r6 series too.
Hi Simon, clearly a fully stacked sensor will be a better class than a partially-stacked sensor, which shouldn't even surprise Nikon ;-)
Regarding potentially outshining the R5ii, I remain pretty zen ..
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker ok thanks simon, they should do more R&D
Canon’s only camera that doesn’t overheat for video is the R5C and it has terrible battery life and no Clog-2. Can we just get something like the FX3 or A7SIII that is reliable for video.
Expect the R5C II to fix all that.
How can I belief the R6III is going to cannibalise their newly launched R5II?
I also think the R7II will be launched before the R6III.
By all accounts though, the R6 Mk II is a fantastic camera for just about everything else, and I'm sure the Mk III will be too.
no video specs??
Ok i just got the strangest error on this video. RUclips popped up a black screen with a folder icon with a dead bird on it. WT!? That was disturbing.
I heard it will also come with drone capabilities
Canon will headline there stand at The Photography Show at the Excel in London in early March 2025 with the Canon R6 MKIII and a RF 85mm f1.4L VCM.
Happy Holidays
Back at ya :)

How about the R3 ii?
Nothing heard yet.
The only thing that it is missing is CLOG2 and it sucks because looks like cripple hammer.
so sony a7v will also be 33mp stacked sensor.
If the price stays at $2,500, that would be a seriously good value. Seems like every brand crushes it with their mk iii version 😂.
I need better dynamic range or white balance or custom video bottom in photo mode. Everything else is a gimmick.
What 5d 2
I am still waiting
I would prefer to have/see a Nikon Z8 with a native 24mpix sensor and uncrippled firmware. Focus stacking, 5-axis internal ibis, etc. A true *native* mid to pro range 24mp class successor to the D5 and D750. That would end all the pointless debates in a hurry.
I'm barely holding onto any Canon stuff theses days. It's also all used stuff.
I do not understand canons logic, give the mkiii a stacked sensor and CF express card and reduce the maximum frame rate from 40 frames per second to 30 frames per second
Maybe it will shoot 14bit instead?
Maybe higher bitdepth, resolution and RAw non compressed.
Let's see what the final outcome is. Keep in mind, not matter how much these are validated, they aren't from the official source.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker 👍
just bought a A7IV and I don't like Sony I tried I'm sorry I can't do it. I gotta sell it now and wait for the mark 3.
The R5 11 was a minor update not a new major camera model .That will come in 2029.
Out shine the R5 Mark II? It is going to be 60 megapixels?!
That's why Canon pisses me off! They always know how not to treat their higher end camera customers...
That's almost too good to be true except not having Clog2
Would be awesome if canon can compete with Nikon here
In my opinion, a resolution bump is expected. They should at least increase it to 28 or 30 MP as a necessary photography upgrade.
If the same sensor as the R3 the resolution will be 24 MP.
The 24mpx is for the high speed shooting, better rolling shutter and better uncropped 4k@60p.
I think the writing is on the wall... using the R3 sensor so it will be 24mp. I can't see them changing that resolution anytime soon.
sony introducing a lot of color noise with resolution bump from 24mp to 33mp was a bad move
Agreed. I love the 30mp sensor in my 5D4. If that sensor was in the R6(i,ii,iii) I would be more inclined to make the switch over. However, I still don't like the fake feeling of the EVF, compared to a mirrored VF.
5:43 thats nothing new at Canon. They keep doing this, adding features on cheaper cameras rather than their high-end models
gossip? rumors?
Hmmmm...why R6m3 would that just make us R5M2 buys angry? I mean I waited so long for the R5M2, then a R6m3 at a cheaper prince...hmmmmm...pretty much makes me decide the R5m2 will be my last Canon last me till I'm 6 ft under. If R6m3 is a success...why buy the R5m2...the consumer pie is only so big as afar as us old farts. But maybe Canon will make up for us old people with new youngings so maybe that's a good market....make more money by selling more cheaper cameras and less money by selling expensive cameras....will I guess the bean counters have figured it all out...profit is king regardless of how one gets there. this was a good video, didn't care for the R4 one.
proper , fail free eye controlled AF is a few years off yet.
