By the way, I really like it when you break down the music / chords, etc., on screen, and would like to see more of that. Your comment completely echo's my experience of this album. It was the first Joni Mitchell album I bought. when I was 15. It's been a staple of my life ever since. I too always listen to the entire album. Of all her albums, I still enjoy this one the most. It has the most variety, the increasing jazz influence, and incredible lyrics. The arrangements are stellar and there is good alternation between guitar and piano-centric songs. "Blue" and "Hejira" would be tied for my second favorite albums, but neither has the variety and stylistic breadth of "Court & Spark".
Summer of 1974. I was only sixteen year old and hitchhiked with a friend from a Chicago suburb across upper Midwest USA to Yellowstone Park and down to Salt Lake City. A couple of those days I traveled with Joni Mitchell and it is branded in my memory. On day two in South Dakota we were picked up by two girls in a van heading back to California after a road trip east across Canada, and then headed back west, visiting sites along the way. We traveled with these girls for two days stopping at various sites; Mount Rushmore, Cody Wyoming, Yellowstone Park etc. We were getting along fine, indulging in hash and listening to an excellent sound system they had as we drove the miles. They had the full Court And Spark record on tape and it was the first time I heard it. (I did know of and enjoyed Joni's earlier recordings and had already heard Help Me I should add.) They must have played it at keast a half dozen times those two days but I certainly did not complain. As I got more familiar after each listen I began to love it and have ever since. Whenever I here it now I cannot help thinking of that experience in my life... and how I spent those couple days traveling with Joni.
For me the 1-2 punch o' People's Parties / Same Situation is the pinnacle o' this Joni Mitchell album. Her observations 'n vulnerabilities on full display 'n the music fits to perfection...Love, love, love!!!
PS: You said you were interested in knowing how this was received at the time . I happen to vividly remember the release of this album (and Bob Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks" around the same time, and Paul SImon's "Still Crazy After All These Years"......those three albums were major "songwriter" albums of 1974-1975, major albums for those three 60s artists) Anyways, I can attest: when "Court And Spark" came out, it was played a lot in my house, and it was an album that never left the turntable as the years went on, if you know what I mean. It's stayed a perennial, an instant classic. She got airplay as well. CONVERSELY: I asked my Aunt a few weeks ago, about Joni. She had been a hardcore Joni fan since her earliest albums in the late 60s. She told me she DIDN'T like "Court And Spark" when it came out....and still doesn't! For her, this was too jazzy, she didn't like the departure from the "folk" sound! Ha! For me, it's THE Joni Mitchell album. Perfectly paced and sequenced, also! THANK YOU CAROLINE!!!!!!!! Yes, at the time of its release and for months afterward, Court and Spark was EVERYWHERE, and that was a good thing. (For reference, I was living in L.A. at the time.)
Yeah, those albums were playing all over the place then. I'm of a similar mind to your aunt; these tunes seem a little overworked rhythmically, too artificed. But I love Joni, and she had such great players with her, that i've learned to love most of this album, even in these jazz stylings which aren't really to my natural taste.
My god, Help Me pretty much defined my childhood. I was 11 when it was all over the radio. Even then, it captured me and still hasn't let go of me 48 years later.
Great stuff again! Hope you continue - The Hissing of Summer Lawns is fantastic and strange. (or if you want to go back pre-Blue, Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon are both awesome too in the more folky acoustic-y period)

Anyone who likes any Joni album is a wise person; blessed with empathy, compassion, culture and intelligence. Let's face it, her records reach a special place within us and connect us emotionally. Be it the sophisticated arrangements of Court & Spark era, the aching honesty of Blue or the cool detachment of Hejira (my 3 personal favourites) musically, lyrically...no one can touch her. And if 'Ray's Dad's Cadillac' doesn't put a smile on your face, why are you here?
Always a pleasure to listen to/watch your reactions and enjoyment of good music! Here's something I just discovered about Raised on Robbery. Originally the lyric was "blue money riding on the Maple Leafs" which would have meant a $5 bet as Canadian $5 bills are blue. You can clearly hear this if you listen to the original album. However I see Wikipedia (and later live versions on RUclips) say "little money riding..." Seems like she changed the lyric to make it less Canadian and more comprehensible to American/international audiences. Of course that was back in the day when there was no Wikipedia and people couldn't hear the song and say "what is blue money?" and find out in a few seconds.
Now can you do Van Morrison's "Blue Money" too?! So cool to find this out after all these decades! And of course I'm going to check my albums (yes, I have multiple copies of this) to see if the earlier pressings have the "blue" reference.
You answered the question that's always burned in my mind: why didn't Joni ever do "Help Me" live?! Thank you! Man oh man, that song blows me away, musically and lyrically, a perfect record....you're right: I WAS shocked to hear that bit of info! What's funny is the song from this album she DOES do live is the next one: "Free Man In Paris"! Which you (and I ) never liked nearly as much! LOVED your reaction to "Car On A Hill", my other favorite! Thanks for explaining why that turnaround works musically! I agree, I could listen to that section on a loop, lol. She wisely only uses it twice in the song so we don't get sick of it! I've always noticed that! Very smart songwriting! Don't beat the chorus to death! *** Joni did all the arrangements on this one! Masterful! Most of her early stuff was spare and acoustic. These arrangements are so sophisticated and tasteful and perfect. Not a note out of place. Beautifully engineered and recorded as well. THIS VIDEO GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS! Totally agree with your analysis of her abilities as a lyricist. She knows how to "paint a picture" as you say. She captures so much about being a human, being a woman (and also a man), being in and out of love, feeling insecure, feeling wise.....what a writer.
"You love your lovin'/But not like you love your freedom" -- that is a theme with her -- which in "Help Me" she finally admits is true also of herself. She SAID that she didn't want to be famous -- but in some songs she celebrates the wealth, the privilege, her "superiority" or at least conspicuous distinction from everyone else.
She's not celebrating fame on this record at ALL. Nearly every word of "People's Parties" is about the phoniness and awkward social obligations that accompany being a public figure and having to attend soirees in the Hollywood Hills. "Free Man in Paris" is about wanting to escape the trappings of fame, etc. To my mind, this record has always been an honest account of a very famous artist wrestling with having to be famous while still creating art that rings true. The second side of the album is a bit different, but many of the songs seem to speak to wanting some kind of escape, and I think a lot of them presage the road trip album she'd go on to make two years later.

Still my favorite studio album of hers, for me. Several great songs but the one that did me in was 'Same Situation'. I knew she was good but it was at that moment I realised I was listening to a true musical genius of my own time and generation. 'Twisted' was a foretaste of her experimentation with jazz vocals, successful but imo really a minor sideroad compared to her great folk-rock epics still to come. The G-word is terribly overused for musicians we admire. All I will say is this: anyone who can fit the word "unfettered" into the chorus of a charting pop single has my vote.
Help Me is every 70s song, it just has the atmosphere from those years music. Larry Carlton does an outstanding job there. Since you seem to really appreciate Joni's lyrical mastery, I suggest you listen to Hejira next. She uses her very peculiar phrasing skill to glue together words, melody and rhythm throughout the album.
So nice of you to appreciate this album....Mitchell did unusual "odd" tunings on her guitar because her Creativity was unbounded (David Crosby called them "Martian tunings" when they jammed back in the past). Her collaboration with Mingus was so brilliant, and when Jaco Pastorius played Bass with her....I appreciate how you appreciate Music, and are always exploratory and curious. Isn't that the point? Brilliant album. The first of the 'big three' for me with the best coming soon. I realise that the way RUclips works requires you to chop songs up, but because I know these songs so well I found the jump cuts really disturbing. Your reaction is cool and the album is great but the video I found hard to enjoy. Having said that, I owe you thanks because I will be listening to Court And Spark this afternoon..... Probably The Hissing Of Summer Lawns and Hejira too.
Hi Caroline, I'm so glad your doing Joni! I'm 64 and bought this LP not long after it came out and I still pull it out fairly often, and still love it alot!. I really loved all of your Beatles "first listens". I think it would be so cool for you to do Kate Bush someday. Think about it!
It's wonderful that you exposed this album's 'great unknowns' - folks know the AM radio hits (fine fine, good good) - but those hidden jewels are THE real treasures of this album... and most of hers, too. But like LADIES OF THE CANYON, BLUE, ROSES, COURT & SPARK is a work that begs weeks-on-end of solo devourings. Just one album at a time, for days and weeks. A road trip with just one set of songs.
I'd also caution Caroline: spending days/weeks/months with any of her albums will likely change your preferences of favorites. After decades with them, I am happy that I occasionally find a song I'm bored listening to AT THAT TIME (or year, even), they all come around again.
After a certain number of Joni albums you start taking for granted how rich and buttery her voice was all the way through her range, in every register. “People’s Parties” was a great demonstration of that. I always felt the low dip in the three-part melodic figure at the end, with the “laughing” descant up high, was a great expression of how a person can feel a wave of depression while keeping up a light front.

I really enjoy your reactions and analysis of the music. It would be even more fun to see you react to each song in its entirety, but I know there are good reasons why you don't. The silver lining to that cloud is that the longer the video, the more likely the time constraints imposed by everyday life would cause me to put it on the back burner in hopes of a future listen, so I'm not complaining.
You MUST hear the followup album, "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" next. It's in the same jazz-pop style of "Court And Spark", but more experimental and weird (in the best possible ways). It was trashed at the time but many (like myself) now regard it as her masterpiece. BTW it almost looked like you were going to tear up at the close of "Same Situation"!! It's always interesting seeing a woman hear "Court And Spark"--the quintessential "woman's album" for decades now (although many men tend to enjoy and identify with it just as much)--for the first time.
Second this recommendation. Harry's House is one of her best songs. When she slid older pop hits into her songs was always special. Centerpiece in HH, Unchained Melody in Chinese Cafe, Goodbye Baby in This Flight Tonight.
I don't think you read too much into this. She was capable of standing a few feet from herself and observing what was happening -- the confluence of popularity, talent, the music business, her own desires, and what the world expected from a young talented beautiful woman. She watched with a clear eye.
I went through a period where I listen to Help Me every day for almost a year. It took a long to find out who sung it. I had it on a old tape, without a label.
I've been listening to this ever since it came out.... God weren't we so lucky with all the musicians and records we had growing up in the 60's and 70's.... It never gets old and always feels fresh. This album, Hejira and The Hissing of Summer Lawns are just albums that I always put on. She is just pure genius.... And I don't use that word often... Keep on Rocking.
I have to admit, Joni Mitchell, is an artist I’ve long neglected in my record collection. I own a lot of them now and wish I had explored her work more earlier in my life. She’s recently been the focus of a lot of reactions on RUclips, I think probably because Rick Beato admitted she’s one his musical heroes. It got me moving on listening to her catalog too. Court And Spark is one of her albums that was already in my vocabulary. She has an amazing way with phrasing. The only person that comes to mind who does something similar at times is Brian Van Der Ark.

I drove to the 1974 World's Fair from Chicago to Spokane, in a refurb '66 Mustang, with no bumpers, Court and Spark on endless loop 8 track. It was graduation from HS, and welcome to the adult world. It was part of the soundtrack to my early adult life. With Joni, Bette Midler Barbra Streisand; Beatles; Steely Dan; Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy; Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Burned into my mind, the summer of 1974.

Joni loved jazz and jazz musicians loved Joni. She had a stellar line-up on Court and Spark. Max Bennet on bass, guitarist Larry Carlton, Joe Sample on keyboards, and the fabulous John Guerin on drums.
I’d love to see your reaction to some other landmark albums. I’d suggest FOREVER CHANGES by Love, SONG CYCLE by Van Dyke Parks, ODDESSEY AND ORACLE by The Zombies, and THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY.

One of my very favourite albums for its musicality and the lyrics that are so perfect. I find it difficult to choose between this album and Blue, For the Roses and The Hissing of Summer Lawns as to which would be my favourite Joni album, they are all so fantastic.
Caroline, May I suggest an album for you to react to. The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds. It's considered their greatest work and it features many different instruments, (like Sgt. Peppers did). In the mid '60's The Beatles considered The Beach Boys to be their main competition. The Beach Boys were an American band that popularized "surf/rock music". But Pet Sounds isn't like that Brian Wilson is considered one of the true geniuses of 20th century music.
I have enjoyed watching your videos. This one brought back the memory of seeing her in concert in February 1976, which was right after the release of The Hissing of Summer Lawns. What I remember is how polite and observant the audience was, almost too quiet. May I suggest you consider creating a video on Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys' album from 1966? It served as an inspiration for Sgt. Pepper's. Another album to consider is Forever Changes by a band called Love. Psychedelia classic that influenced many other artists. Released about the same time.
Wonderful album. I remember this young woman who used to live in my city years ago who said she was a big Joni fan. We were talking abouthow good "Court and Spark" is and running down the songs. She said something like, "And the greatest Joni Mitchell song ever, "Twisted". Which is funny, cuz it's actually a cover by Wardell Gray & Annie Ross. I personally think she has several better songs than that one.
I was listening to Court & Spark one night in 1974, literally while waiting for a car on the hill. From my balcony, I watched for headlights coming up to my apartment from the street below.. for hours.. 😢🍺

If you liked Twisted you really should familiarize yourself with Lambert Hendrix and Ross. Their albums LHR Sing a Song of Basie and LHR sings Ellington would be the best contenders. Please keep going with Joni.

I don't love the album version of Just like this train much either but the version she played on David Letterman, its one of her all time top live performances and she changes the song into a far better one. A must watch video for any Joni fan
A complex album. Personally I love it when 'serious' artists allow pop sensibilities in and Help Me has a gorgeous groove: too often the from the heart direct to the heart approach gets undervalued. This video Caroline is a balanced, honest response. Check out Joni's paintings too.
I'm old enough to remember when this album came out. The ONLY thing wrong with this album is that it is over too soon. Her live double album, "Miles of Aisles" is great as well. If nothing else, listen to her "Hits" album. Joni Mitchell is one of my top 2 or 3 favorite female artists of all time. She is easily the coolest of them all (IMO).
You must have put a lot of effort into making this video, combining a first reaction with interesting hindsight works exceptionally well for me as a viewer. I just wish CAZZA would cover a few Joni Mitchell songs and share her insights into the chord progressions, I think it could be such fun 😃

Thank you for entertaining my suggestion of this LP, Hissing and Hejira. I fell in love for the first time to these 3 albums. On these albums Joni gains complete control of her vocal range without using the extremes as a party trick. " Free Man In Paris" was written about and from the viewpoint of her friend David Geffen.Joni Mitchell has the uncanny ability to take a Polaroid of time - and then write about that moment. I consider these three albums similar to achievement of The Beatles White Album and Abbey Road. Her best work musically and lyrically by far. " Raised On Robbery: is about a woman working as a hooker - " sitting on her groceries, up after midnight cooking".....and now " Hissing of Summer Lawns"?????

Raised on Robbery could be my favorite Joni song. I like the lyrics, Especially the last verse. "Hey where you going? Don't go yet. Your glass ain't empty and we just met. You're mean when you're loaded." If he is mean when he's loaded, why does she want him to finish his drink?

Court and spark is a absolute masterpiece. With strong melodies throughout and lyrics that weave a story the way only joni can tell.

My favorite album by my all-time favorite vocalist... It just never gets old.
The way she places the phrase "unfettered and alive" is magical. I can't think of another writer who would do that.
The only one I can think of would be Elton John, he crammed a lot of Bernie's words into some interesting bars at times.

Man oh man, that song blows me away, musically and lyrically, a perfect record....you're right: I WAS shocked to hear that bit of info! What's funny is the song from this album she DOES do live is the next one: "Free Man In Paris"! Which you (and I ) never liked nearly as much! LOVED your reaction to "Car On A Hill", my other favorite! Thanks for explaining why that turnaround works musically! I agree, I could listen to that section on a loop, lol. She wisely only uses it twice in the song so we don't get sick of it! I've always noticed that! Very smart songwriting! Don't beat the chorus to death! *** Joni did all the arrangements on this one! Masterful! Most of her early stuff was spare and acoustic. These arrangements are so sophisticated and tasteful and perfect. Not a note out of place. Beautifully engineered and recorded as well. THIS VIDEO GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS! Totally agree with your analysis of her abilities as a lyricist. She knows how to "paint a picture" as you say. She captures so much about being a human, being a woman (and also a man), being in and out of love, feeling insecure, feeling wise.....what a writer.
"You love your lovin'/But not like you love your freedom" -- that is a theme with her -- which in "Help Me" she finally admits is true also of herself.
She SAID that she didn't want to be famous -- but in some songs she celebrates the wealth, the privilege, her "superiority" or at least conspicuous distinction from everyone else.

She's not celebrating fame on this record at ALL. Nearly every word of "People's Parties" is about the phoniness and awkward social obligations that accompany being a public figure and having to attend soirees in the Hollywood Hills. "Free Man in Paris" is about wanting to escape the trappings of fame, etc. To my mind, this record has always been an honest account of a very famous artist wrestling with having to be famous while still creating art that rings true. The second side of the album is a bit different, but many of the songs seem to speak to wanting some kind of escape, and I think a lot of them presage the road trip album she'd go on to make two years later.
I'm amazed that "Down to You" wasn't in your favs.... it is simply the best song on the Album

Still my favorite studio album of hers, for me. Several great songs but the one that did me in was 'Same Situation'. I knew she was good but it was at that moment I realised I was listening to a true musical genius of my own time and generation. 'Twisted' was a foretaste of her experimentation with jazz vocals, successful but imo really a minor sideroad compared to her great folk-rock epics still to come. The G-word is terribly overused for musicians we admire. All I will say is this: anyone who can fit the word "unfettered" into the chorus of a charting pop single has my vote.
Back in the day everyone’s girlfriend had this record. Of all the female performers at the time I always liked Joni best.
Help Me is every 70s song, it just has the atmosphere from those years music. Larry Carlton does an outstanding job there.
Since you seem to really appreciate Joni's lyrical mastery, I suggest you listen to Hejira next.
She uses her very peculiar phrasing skill to glue together words, melody and rhythm throughout the album.
This is more your speed, not Nirvana. I don't know what you were thinking 🙄.

Cheech and Chong on Twisted
So nice of you to appreciate this album....Mitchell did unusual "odd" tunings on her guitar because her Creativity was unbounded (David Crosby called them "Martian tunings" when they jammed back in the past). Her collaboration with Mingus was so brilliant, and when Jaco Pastorius played Bass with her....I appreciate how you appreciate Music, and are always exploratory and curious. Isn't that the point? I realise that the way RUclips works requires you to chop songs up, but because I know these songs so well I found the jump cuts really disturbing. Your reaction is cool and the album is great but the video I found hard to enjoy. Having said that, I owe you thanks because I will be listening to Court And Spark this afternoon..... Probably The Hissing Of Summer Lawns and Hejira too.
Hi Caroline, I'm so glad your doing Joni! I'm 64 and bought this LP not long after it came out and I still pull it out fairly often, and still love it alot!. I really loved all of your Beatles "first listens". I think it would be so cool for you to do Kate Bush someday. Think about it!
It's wonderful that you exposed this album's 'great unknowns' - folks know the AM radio hits (fine fine, good good) - but those hidden jewels are THE real treasures of this album... and most of hers, too. But like LADIES OF THE CANYON, BLUE, ROSES, COURT & SPARK is a work that begs weeks-on-end of solo devourings. Just one album at a time, for days and weeks. A road trip with just one set of songs.
I'd also caution Caroline: spending days/weeks/months with any of her albums will likely change your preferences of favorites. After decades with them, I am happy that I occasionally find a song I'm bored listening to AT THAT TIME (or year, even), they all come around again.
After a certain number of Joni albums you start taking for granted how rich and buttery her voice was all the way through her range, in every register. “People’s Parties” was a great demonstration of that. I always felt the low dip in the three-part melodic figure at the end, with the “laughing” descant up high, was a great expression of how a person can feel a wave of depression while keeping up a light front.

Peoples Party was played on acoustic with a rarely used alternate tuning. I think the guitar was also overdubbed.

I really enjoy your reactions and analysis of the music. It would be even more fun to see you react to each song in its entirety, but I know there are good reasons why you don't. The silver lining to that cloud is that the longer the video, the more likely the time constraints imposed by everyday life would cause me to put it on the back burner in hopes of a future listen, so I'm not complaining.
Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira are my favorites…deeper and more experimental. Incredible.
You MUST hear the followup album, "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" next. It's in the same jazz-pop style of "Court And Spark", but more experimental and weird (in the best possible ways). It was trashed at the time but many (like myself) now regard it as her masterpiece. BTW it almost looked like you were going to tear up at the close of "Same Situation"!! It's always interesting seeing a woman hear "Court And Spark"--the quintessential "woman's album" for decades now (although many men tend to enjoy and identify with it just as much)--for the first time.
Second this recommendation. Harry's House is one of her best songs. When she slid older pop hits into her songs was always special. Centerpiece in HH, Unchained Melody in Chinese Cafe, Goodbye Baby in This Flight Tonight.

I don't think you read too much into this. She was capable of standing a few feet from herself and observing what was happening -- the confluence of popularity, talent, the music business, her own desires, and what the world expected from a young talented beautiful woman. She watched with a clear eye.

I went through a period where I listen to Help Me every day for almost a year. It took a long to find out who sung it. I had it on a old tape, without a label.
I've been listening to this ever since it came out.... God weren't we so lucky with all the musicians and records we had growing up in the 60's and 70's.... It never gets old and always feels fresh. This album, Hejira and The Hissing of Summer Lawns are just albums that I always put on. She is just pure genius.... And I don't use that word often... Keep on Rocking.

I have to admit, Joni Mitchell, is an artist I’ve long neglected in my record collection. I own a lot of them now and wish I had explored her work more earlier in my life. She’s recently been the focus of a lot of reactions on RUclips, I think probably because Rick Beato admitted she’s one his musical heroes. It got me moving on listening to her catalog too. Court And Spark is one of her albums that was already in my vocabulary. She has an amazing way with phrasing. The only person that comes to mind who does something similar at times is Brian Van Der Ark.

I drove to the 1974 World's Fair from Chicago to Spokane, in a refurb '66 Mustang, with no bumpers, Court and Spark on endless loop 8 track. It was graduation from HS, and welcome to the adult world. It was part of the soundtrack to my early adult life. With Joni, Bette Midler Barbra Streisand; Beatles; Steely Dan; Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy; Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Burned into my mind, the summer of 1974.

One of my very favourite albums for its musicality and the lyrics that are so perfect. I find it difficult to choose between this album and Blue, For the Roses and The Hissing of Summer Lawns as to which would be my favourite Joni album, they are all so fantastic.

The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds.
It's considered their greatest work and it features many different instruments, (like Sgt. Peppers did).
In the mid '60's The Beatles considered The Beach Boys to be their main competition.
The Beach Boys were an American band that popularized "surf/rock music". But Pet Sounds isn't like that
Brian Wilson is considered one of the true geniuses of 20th century music.
I have enjoyed watching your videos. This one brought back the memory of seeing her in concert in February 1976, which was right after the release of The Hissing of Summer Lawns. What I remember is how polite and observant the audience was, almost too quiet. May I suggest you consider creating a video on Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys' album from 1966? It served as an inspiration for Sgt. Pepper's. Another album to consider is Forever Changes by a band called Love. Psychedelia classic that influenced many other artists. Released about the same time.
Wonderful album. I remember this young woman who used to live in my city years ago who said she was a big Joni fan. We were talking abouthow good "Court and Spark" is and running down the songs. She said something like, "And the greatest Joni Mitchell song ever, "Twisted". Which is funny, cuz it's actually a cover by Wardell Gray & Annie Ross. I personally think she has several better songs than that one.
I was listening to Court & Spark one night in 1974, literally while waiting for a car on the hill. From my balcony, I watched for headlights coming up to my apartment from the street below.. for hours.. 😢🍺

If you liked Twisted you really should familiarize yourself with Lambert Hendrix and Ross. Their albums LHR Sing a Song of Basie and LHR sings Ellington would be the best contenders. Please keep going with Joni.

I don't love the album version of Just like this train much either but the version she played on David Letterman, its one of her all time top live performances and she changes the song into a far better one. A must watch video for any Joni fan
A complex album. Personally I love it when 'serious' artists allow pop sensibilities in and Help Me has a gorgeous groove: too often the from the heart direct to the heart approach gets undervalued.

I'm old enough to remember when this album came out. The ONLY thing wrong with this album is that it is over too soon. Her live double album, "Miles of Aisles" is great as well. If nothing else, listen to her "Hits" album. Joni Mitchell is one of my top 2 or 3 favorite female artists of all time. She is easily the coolest of them all (IMO).

Thank you for entertaining my suggestion of this LP, Hissing and Hejira. I fell in love for the first time to these 3 albums. On these albums Joni gains complete control of her vocal range without using the extremes as a party trick. " Free Man In Paris" was written about and from the viewpoint of her friend David Geffen.Joni Mitchell has the uncanny ability to take a Polaroid of time - and then write about that moment. I consider these three albums similar to achievement of The Beatles White Album and Abbey Road. Her best work musically and lyrically by far. " Raised On Robbery: is about a woman working as a hooker - " sitting on her groceries, up after midnight cooking".....and now " Hissing of Summer Lawns"?????

Raised on Robbery could be my favorite Joni song. I like the lyrics, Especially the last verse. "Hey where you going? Don't go yet. Your glass ain't empty and we just met. You're mean when you're loaded." If he is mean when he's loaded, why does she want him to finish his drink?
He is mean when he's loaded with money. She wants him to get rid of his money by buying more drinks.
