    I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465 for 8 years, and I can tell you that if you do not ride that bike hard enough you will never get the engine to clean out, and it will run ratty on you the whole time. It looks to me like you are riding scared, like you are scared of the power, and I do not blame you, it is a beast.
    But if you give it half throttle or more, and run it through the gears a couple times on a flat road, it will clean out and run right. You need to gas it pretty hard when it is cold to get it to clean out, or it will run ratty. I know I did the same thing when I first got mine.
    After you first start it find a road where you can run it through the gears at half throttle or more, just be careful on the throttle, go slow up to half throttle, or 3/4 throttle, roll it on slowly. Then go through the gears a couple times and it will start to clean out on you, once it is cleaned out it will pull the front wheel every time you hit the throttle, so be careful with the throttle after it cleans out.
    And if you lug it around at 1/4 throttle, like you are doing at the beginning of this video, it will foul a plug on you. It's a big bore race bike, and you have to run it hard to clean it out, and keep it from fouling a plug. If you baby it around it will never clean out, and you will think it needs a new top end, when it does not need a new top end.
    I only did one top end job a year on my Suzuki RM465, they have so much power you can never use it all, so it does not stree the piston and rings very much, so they last a lot longer than they do on a 125 or a 250. Because you are running at lower rpm's, with way more power.
    Trust me, I will bet that bike does not need a top end, unless you know for sure it does, I aould bet it does not need it. You have to run it at higher rpm's to get the engine to run right, if you putt around on it at barely above idle it will never clean out, and run ratty like it needs a new tope end, when it dont.

    The bike sounds great, you just need to give it more throttle so it does not run so ratty. It's a big bore race bike and it wants to run at higher rpm's. just roll the throttle on so it does not wheelie on you. I would bet the farm it does not need a new top end, it starts 1st kick and I do not hear any piston or ring chatter. The engine sounds great when you get on it, it sounds tight, like the pistin and rings are in good shape. You should only have to do a new top end once a year.
    I would also suggest you get some mx gloves and some mx boots, riding with no gloves and tennis shows will not be good if you hit a tree branch on your hands, or fall, you could hurt your feet or your hands. And one last thing, you need to get that beats on a motocross track, where you can open it up and feel that power, the trails you are on are not made for that bike, I doubt you even got out of 2nd gear.

    When you ride it like that short-shifting it you are loading up the engine, that is why it is running so ratty, you need to wind the gears out to higher rpm's in each gear so it keeps the engine cleaned out, and it will not run so ratty on you.
    You are lugging the engine too much, and it is not a trail bike, it does not like those tight twisty slow turn trails, it is better on bigger areas and mx tracks. Stay out of the woods, if possible, and just gun it on the longer straights, you are not giving it enough throttle to keep it from running ratty.
    If you have any questions about it, just ask me.

    • @2strokereptile
      @2strokereptile 6 месяцев назад

      You summed it up well. Ive come from a KTM380 so not scared of giving it some.
      I just thought they should be ridden like that using the torque instead of revs. Mate used to ride his YZ490 like that. This is my first VMX big bore.
      My 16yr old nephew got on it later in the day and gave it a good flogging.
      It was cleared out after he rode it. He absolutely loved it. It still rattles a bit though. I dont think its ever been opened up before.
      I did have my boots on and checked the gloves on later.
      The track going down was a bit dry and slippery until we'd been up and down a few times.
      Wish there had of been some jumps.

    • @steves2241
      @steves2241 6 месяцев назад

      @@2strokereptile Yeah I noticed there was a rattle somewhere, but I do not think it is in the engine. When you were gassing it up the hill it sounded great, and it cleaned out a little then.
      I would check to see if something is loose somewhere and causing the rattle. It does vibrate a lot, and things can work loose sometimes. When I rode mine it was at a place with a long straight, right next to where I parked the truck.
      So I would start it then run it through the gears full throttle 2 or 3 times, that gets the engine cleared out, then as you ride it you do not want to use the torque only, if you lug the engine too much you will foul the plug then it will never run right, unless you put a new plug in it.
      If you putt around on it at 1/2 throttle, or less, you are not burning all the fuel it is pumping into the engine, that loads it up and fouls the plug, then it will run ratty on you. Once you start it and start riding it, you have to get the engine cleaned out, then ride it at high enough rpm's to keep it cleared out.
      Then it will run like a monster, and not run so ratty. You were cruising it around right above idle for long periods of time, and it was running ratty, but when you got to that hill and you gave it about 1/2 throttle it took off like a rocket.
      That is how you need to ride it all the time, you need to get on the gas and get it into the powerband almost all the time, I used to ride mine at 1/2 throttle to 3/4 throttle, to keep the engine cleaned out and keep it from running ratty.
      I also mixed my gas at 40:1 using Bel-Ray MC-1 racing oil, and that helped to keep it running better too. I rode every weekend all day Saturday and Sunday during the summer, then over the winter I put a new top end on it.
      It ran like a champ, best bike I ever had. And not once in the 8 years I had it did I have a problem with the engine, or a breakdown. it started 2nd kick when cold, and 1st kick when warm.
      You should be able to ride it all summer on one top end, that is what I did. And I rode it hard too, usually around 3/4 throttle. Just remember it has all that power so do not just give it full throttle, roll the throttle on so it does not flip on you.
      When it is running right the front wheel should come up in every gear at the touch of the throttle, except for 5th gear. Just run it at higher rpm's so the plug does not get fouled and the engine stays cleared out, and it will run forever.
      I tried not to ride it at idle like you were doing, I did not like hearing it run ratty like that, I was entier on the gas or off the gas, it's a race bike, and that is how they were made to run. Try not to idle it around, the more you do that the mosr it will make the engine run ratty, and the harder it will be to keep it cleared out.
      It is a bog bore race bike, and it needs to be run hard enough to burn all the fuel the carb is pumping into the cylinder, if not, the bike will run ratty, and not want to have that instant pop when you hit the throttle.
      When you ran it at idle for a while then you hit the gas it ran ratty, until you went a little ways down the trail, then it cleared out and it was lifting the front wheel with a blip of the throttle.
      If you keep the rpm's up and ride it in a lower gear, and do not short shift it, the bike will not run so ratty. You short shift a 4 stroke, not a big bore 2 stroke race bike like the RM465.
      Run it harder at higher rpm's and the bike will run great, stay cleared out, not foul a plug, and not run so ratty. Do not putt around on it at idle, or lug the engine in a higher gear, that is the worst thing you can do. Ride it like you stole it, and try to keep it at 1/2 throttle or higher, and you will see what I am talking about.

    • @steves2241
      @steves2241 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@2strokereptile Exactly, it is not made for woods riding. It is made for a motocross track, where you can run it hard at high rpm's, and fast speeds. I used to ride mine at a gravel pit with miles long straights where I could run it at top spedd in 5th gear.
      It is a racer, and the carb is dumping so much fuel in the cylinder if you putt it around it is not buring all that fule then it starts to load up the engine and if you do it for too long it will foul a plug and die on you, then be really hard to start, and you will have to put a new spark plug in it.
      I used to carry a 6 pack of spark plugs with me in my tool box just in case I fouled a plug, when I first got it. I would foul a plug once in a while, because I putt around on it right above idle. Then I learned I had to run in harder at higher rpm's, and I never fould a plug again, and it did not run so ratty.
      And I am sure there were some loose bolts, those big boke 2 strokes have a lot of vibration, and bolts come loose, so I would check them after every ride. And loc-tite some of them that you do not need to remove very often, or use a lock washer where you can.
      Take care of it, and it will run forever, those engines are bulletproof, it is almost impossible to hurt one. The only problem I ever had was I ran it at too high rpm's one day on a long straight and it got real hot, because it is air-cooled, and it started sputtering a little. So I pulled the head when I got home and the head gasket was melted a little, so I just put a new head gasket on it and it ran like brand new.
      In 8 years that is the only problem I ever had with the engine, and it was a simple fix, I even had a spare head gasket already, so I was ready to ride again in an hour.
      I would also clean the air filter after every ride, and it should run all day with no problems every time you ride. I can tell by the sound of the engine it is in good shape. When they start 1st kick and they do not die on you, with no chatter from the rings the engine has a lot of wear left on it.
      I would ride it all summer, then do a top end on it over the winter. New piston and rings, base gasket, and head gasket, and it will be like a brand new engine again.
