Aye, I do think FF9 does deserve a Remake, but not in the way, of me saying I want it in a newer graphics like FF7 (I’ll save my reasoning at the end of my comment). I already wrote my ideas for a potential one in my videos and other comments talking about it in line to your points 1. Staying mostly a classic traditional 1-1 style: Something akin to Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven, Trials of Mana, Star Ocean 2 and Dragon Quest 3. Where they’re FULLY visual upgrades and can be experienced as one game would be ideal for FF9 Remake (as we see that the Multipart Structure for FF7R has both been a blessing and a curse, the latter evident with Rebirth not meeting sales expectations) 2. Yep expanding characters like Freya, Amarant and Beatrix would be ideal, even giving decdicated Sidquests, ATEs and whatnot would help greatly among also as you said voice acting And 3 it’s combat: I do think FF9 Remake is better to remain turn-based as the original pays homage to the more classic FF games including being the last that had its ATB system. Among the Remake being turn based would not only A: Keep costs down, but B: satsifying the classic FF fans who have been LONGING for a major turn based FF game ever since the recent departures. And while Octopath, Dragon Quest and upcoming Fantasian Neo does exist, there is still that thirst for Final Fantasy to return at least to its turn based roots and while I do think FF has found its place with the hybrid combat that 7R has, it’s only been just 7R and not the next mainline FF game which should have that and add new things to its 4: as to improve upon it. Obviously with faster reaction times and inputs, I would also throw in timing based attacks, maybe mid-character switching like in FFX, among also having expanded dual attacks not limited to just Vivi and Steiner. Have Trance activated manually, maybe since modern FF loves the Stagger system have in form of that or close to Octopath’s break system. Even adding dynamic character angles when your party members attack like with Persona, Metaphor, Like A Dragon and the upcoming Expedition 33. Now obviously FF9 on paper doesn’t really need a remake as it’s still a great game. But given the crisis Square’s facing with its core fanbase and most FF releases now has just been action, action, action, opposed to others that can branch things out like Yakuza with having both games with newer ones turn based and spinoffs and Judgement still be brawlers, or MonHunter with mainline being action and Stories being turn based. Not to mention that Turn based games have been thriving recently with Metaphor Refantazio, Like A Dragon, Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload, and even WRPGs like Baldurs Gate 3. And the hype surrounding Expedition 33 is absolutely insane
Im torn on this... Itd be a great thing...but, what if it gets Nomura-fied? A never ending franchise...and they probably bring that one beloved character back to life for a sequel involving alternate dimensions and what not
I heard that the ff7 remake changes weren’t pushed by nomura. Buuuuuut I look at kh, 3rd birthday, and other stuff he’s involved with and they seem to shoe in time travel
Yall really need to learn about who Nojima is and what kind of story choices he has pushed for before blaming Nomura for any and every change and over the top moment
an idea for the battle system for turn based is the old but proven double/triple tech synergies. This not only makes the gameplay more engaging but also makes sense narrative wise since it's such character development heavy game. We already had a bit of it with the vivi/steiner sword magic combo but i'd like to see it for the whole party. Maybe as certain events happen in the course of the game you start unlocking new passives or techs with some of the involved members. I'd love to see maybe a character switch in/out system similar FFX as this would also complement the double/triple tech system. The trance mechanic needs to be reworked entirely. The conditions for "heightened state of emotion" needs to be something that can be more or less controlled, in a way so that trance can be weaved in to the regular fights to make it more dynamic. Summons also need a few touch ups to make it less "classic" but can't think of anything for now.
Input modifications would be cool. I would think for martial characters, it could be something where the input varies each time and shows up on screen to replicate the uniqueness of each physical situation, while magic could involve memorized combinations in a way that reflects magic and study. If combat were FF7R style, I'd love to see an expansion of the Vivi-Steiner combo. Maybe it still ends up pretty simple, but some more character combos where new abilities are unlocked by party comp. Amarant's and Freya's special abilities often involved different aspects of elemental damage, healing, or special effects, so maybe which ones they have available depends on other party members.
Honestly, my dream FFIX remake keeps the turn based combat with some QoL (like maybe allowing us to swap party members in battle like in FFX). Then just redo all the models of the game. Visually, something like the FFIX Memoria Project but with more texture to all the models.
Final Fantasy 9's one of my all-time favorite entries and my second favorite FF game, my #1 being 6. The rumors about FF 9 getting a remake treatment does seem ideal, but if Square Enix truly wants to go that direction after the success of FF 7 Remake then I wouldn't mind it at all. Then again, FF 9 during it's time was pure, magic and artistically creative that nobody at that time made a RPG like FF 9 felt so revolutionary during the Playstation 1's life cycle. I love your analysis, interpretation and intelligence prior to this video and glad I'm subscribed!
For me, we already have a perfect proof of concept in the Memoria Project, from 2023. It keeps the original art style (the most important part of a potential remake IMO) but simply brings it into the modern era (voice acting, movable camera, improved graphics etc.) It's by no means perfect, but give the concept to the devs at square, plus a professional budget, and it could be amazing. However, if it does happen, it will inevitably come out in 3 parts, over a several year period. Most modern open world rpgs, even rhe really good ones, reuse a tonne of textures, buildings and set dressing to fill up their huge worlds. But, the amount of detail put into the original final fantasy games would need to be honoured in order for it to have any chance of being well received. The reality is, these details take a lot of time to achieve. Also, the cynic in me acknowledges that marketing teams know they can get far more money out of people if they stretch 1 game out into 3. It's just the truth of modern media, I'm afraid. However, the plus side to this (and where I wholeheartedly agree with you) is that it gives us a chance to flesh out more of these peripheral characters. There is no point in remaking something, if you don't expand on it. That's why a 1-1 remake wouldn't cut it for me. There's no point in doing it unless you can add something new, and like you say, we already have the diffinitive version of the original, with the Moguri mod.
Like you said in the later section of the video, FF9 does *not* need a remake. At the moment, Square Enix does not have the minds to make justice to FF9, all their projects try to innovate and turn into something else, than what makes jrpgs what they is. If they want to appeal to modern audiences, make new games. Do not try create something else from great source material. If the game would be hands of Nihon Falcom, or some Atlus team, remake could have the potential to be respectful new interpretion. All Ff7r, XVI, and FF7 rebirth had some good ideas but as jrpgs so average games. Very good points about what it could be though. Just hope for once Square creates something new and original, where they can try all these innovative ideas.
I could agree with this for the sole reason that since it's the weakest of the playstation era, the upgrade could be drastic enough to even out the continuous quality in all the franchises entries. This logic could also be applied to FF13.
That one's impossible. You'll have to throw away most of it. There's not a single aspect of that one that isn't critically flawed in some way: junction, plot, characters, world building - you can only catch a trashfire in a bottle like that once. You can only make it worse by making it better. Love it, btw.
@@vsolyomiouch. I think the junction system was just poorly explained. Also the world building/lore (Hyne etc) was again, poorly explained but kinda cool.
I'm not personally a fan of remakes that do more with the story. Especially when it's decades later, to me it's just fan fiction at that point. Art is influenced and shaped by the times/condition of the time it is made, and an FF9 now would be fundamentally very different even if they were just following the original game's blueprint.
My dream Ff9 remake is just a full rehaul similar to Ff7 but just scaled down. Idk how exactly they’d pull it off but I’d want them to do that but keeping it within one game. Taking out fluff and basically giving us the story 1:1, with environments fully remade, voice acting, recomposed music, and etc.
And not to say I dislike the fluff because it’s always fun to do things like mini games and side quests but I’d easily sacrifice that for the whole story to be contained in one game, at least for Ff9
An option to reduce or increase random encounter rate, I don’t feel like exploring because I can’t take more than a short walk without some squirrel demanding stage presence. :/
Ff 9 was a classic love letter game to the older games. Make it traditional JRPG or there needs to be riots. If they expand anything, I think they should allow playing some things like Garnet and Steiner going off alone. Especially the time Steiner truly rejoins the party, he's still basically "level 10" when everyone else is much higher level.
I think VI and the original trilogy deserve it more. FFIX's visual style is a core aspect of the game that I worry something will be lost in the translation.
ni no kuni and visions of mana are two games that are imo the direction the remake could go to be both faithful but offer a proper remake yet traditional treatment of ff ix
All I’d like is: voiceovers and refined graphics. Leave the story alone (maybe some small tweaks) and keep the battle system. A remake but keeping the old school aspects would be the way to go for me. Going the route of FFVII would kill the original vibe of this game.
yes it does! This game has so much potential and it didn't show it fully on the PS1, due to the limited hardware. It has a beautiful fantasy world that can become more immersive with high resolution graphics and 3d landscapes (not pre-rendered images). Check the memoria project
To be honest I just have had no time to chat with guests. Being in Australia makes booking calls incredibly hard, and usually can only happen on weekends, which is harder because I'm always trying to be as present of a parent as I can be! There's some stuff in the works for next year so don't rule out a comeback, just has to be convenient for me that's all. I do really enjoy doing it though! Thanks for asking!
I have thought about this since this is my favorite game OAT. 1. Uprgrade but don't change the animation style The cartoony style is iconic and was necessary at the time to compensate for the lack of graphics (even though FF were the most graphically advanced games out there), it's welcome today as an alternative to all these games with realistic graphics. 2. Combat system should be turn based and would be a hybrid between Clair Obscur: Operation 33, FFX (specifically the in-fight character rotation) and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. 3. The way you spoke of updating the settings and story is almost perfect, imo so no notes.
I think 9 is fine as is. Its (very few) flaws give it personality and zest. I guess I would make Tetra Master more consistent, introduce Eiko and Amarant into the story sooner, and give Freya more to do. Is this enough to necessitate a massive remake which would take many years and even entire entries a la FF7R, according to one of the original producers? Personally, I'd rather have that fabled 9 anime.
I just finished the game on Steam with MoguriMod for the first tie ever. I really liked it. I devoured it. Regarding the remake question, I have some thoughts/worries. 1- I agree that Freija could use a little more space. No need a full on unveiling the past, mistery is a thing. But space to present herself and expose her emotions a bit more. 2- Amarant...I think it's fine. Not everybody needs to stand out. Maybe by getting him a little earlier in the game his "friction" with Zidane's pov could have more space and evolve less abruptly. Kind of what happens to Steiner. 3- I worry about the acting. Being on a PSX, and having a lot of text/no voice, "rudimentary acting" that give this naive tone to the scenes will be difficult to translate into a full fledged sequence. Lots of work in here to keep the characters true to themselves and not overdo them. 4- I would still keep the turn-based combat. It works great. Overall give more agility and smoothness to the experience but I think it's great. 5- A bit more space to the game in general. I feel like the game takes a long time to set itself up in terms of story. And the map, visiting areas, combat encounters and such don't get enough space for how deep the skill system and habilities learning is until later in the game. Almost around 3rd disc content. Give its structure depth a bit more usage in general and earlier in the game. 6- Do not be afraid to go Old School. It's becoming trend lately and I really like that. 7- Maybe amp up the difficulty. Just a bit, no need to go to the point of being annoying. A really great game in the end that I don't know why I took so long to get into.
It doesn't need one. Just replayed through it. Probably why this video is on my feed. So many modern games fail to keep me invested. And as an adult, my game time is limited. Threw this on and 20 some odd years since my 1st playthrough, it is still one of the most well crafted games, period. Outside of BG3, nothing in the present can captivate me with all aspects from characters and settings, to story and gameplay. FF16 felt so skeletal in comparison.
Id rather a 4k remaster were everything is just using modern models and all buildings and the overworld to scale rather than towns appearing small and expanding upon entering. That is literally it lol. All the story beats and mechanics that don't get affected by scale should be left alone.
Yes I would love to see all the best remade we have 7 so we need 8,9 next 10 has part 2 but a remake of them would be enjoyed too. But 8 and 9 are the 2 I most want again
i agree not remade like ff7, more like the original with 3d backdrops i think ff9 remake would be cool in hd 2d style remake thats the direction i think it should go. but only time will tell you already know they been working on it, so you get what you get.
This is my favorite game of all time by a huge margin, but honestly, i hope it doesnt happen. For one the game is already essentially perfect, the only complaints i could possibly have for it are fixed by moguri, and it also has some improvements like the beatrix mod that would not be there in a remake. 2: they cant do it anyway, ffvii is already three games and ix is a far larger story. Theyd never do it to the quality of the fan-reimmagining that was released about a year ago, and if its not at least that good i really dont need it. 3: i dont think they can make the game look better than the preeendered backgrounds, more realistic =/= better
Yes because I personally just want it!! Those against remakes/remasters just don't buy the remake it's as simple as that it doesn't affect you so let people enjoy things!!! 😉
Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite and it absolutely "deserves" a remake, but it really doesn't NEED one. To be completely honest, I don't want a remake that changes so much of the story beats and moments like 7re (I still like them, but story took a big hit for me) and I'm afraid they would change the art style, I don't know how I feel about voice acting in IX. Moguri Mod is enough for me actually.
If they do the art style from the intro for the whole game would be great I see the need to do some combat tweeks the rather way to easy or like the final bosses the have a high difficulty compared to everything you just fought
I think it’s weird that Final Fantasy IX should get a remake before Final Fantasy VIII. Don’t get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy IX as much as the next guy, but I think FFVIII should get remade first, and then FFIX. Maybe FFX could get a remake but I don’t really think it’s necessary.
I think FFIX did itself a disservice by choosing the font it used because of the confusion around the pronunciation of Iifa. It's not Lifa, it's Iifa - it's a capital "I". The Japanese reading of it is イーファ or (in lower case - iifa). This has propogated as a misunderstanding for years. This video made me remember this. 😅 In any case, I don't think I want a full remake of this game - I think if the game was enchanced and expanded using 3D pre-rendered backgrounds with more versatility and dynamism, I'd be all for that. If it was something like FFVII Remake, it may lose its essence and the stylization of the characters that is communicated so effectively in its current form.
Somehow between 1999 and now FF creation magic has mostly turned into necromancy. IX wasn't meant for a larger open world, it felt small scale and theatrical with locations feeling more like scenery than real places. It was whimsical exaggerated and grotesque at times. There's no way we'll get anything like that in the remake from today's Square. Let it rest in peace.
Dunno if you changed anything, but the audio in this video was particularly good. FFIX deserves only the best treatment which makes me wary around a remake
Deserve? Why so aggressive?! 😂😂 Out of any ff game, 9 by far deserves it. it defo deserves the same treatment as 7 got, and aslong as 9 got a gd remake dont care if 6 and 8 got one eventually too. No other need a remake but a film of ff10 would be beautiful. 9 works for a film too.
It deserves a remake all right, just not one like FFVII. What they should do is improve what needs to be improved and add what needs to be added. Just don't overdo it. Know what I mean?
Dude called the Iifa Tree the "Lifa Tree." Disliked. Bruh. The tileset when you enter it literally spells the name of the tree Iifa. Like come TF on. And no, this game does NOT need a remake. Deserves it, sure. But if it's gonna be like the 7 remake I'm taking a hard pass.
According to you!! According to others well Final Fantasy is a argued which one is actually Goated!! Now I don't hate FF6 definitely love the game!! FF7 on the other hand in my opinion not even top 5!!
There's a reason FF9 took the series back to its roots!! It's Fantasy!! It's not suppose to be realistic!! As Someone who loves cartoon network i appreciate this kind of art design!! I like sci fi and realistic games too like GTA but when it comes to Final Fantasy I'd rather they stick with their Fantasy roots!!
@pierre0227 that tells me that Final Fantasy is dying and the only reason it's still selling today is because OG fans will buy the game based off the title name alone!! I'll admit I've done this too!! While I'm ok with FF16 didn't really like 13 trilogy, 15 or FF7 Remake and Rebirth!! That's just me though!!
They debunked 6!! Unfortunately Square backed down because according to them it'd take 20+ years just to remake the game because of all the characters all the boss fights and much more!!
NOOOOO!!!!! God this is so frustrating. Just play the original game jfc. When will people understand that graphical improvement does not necessarily make a game better and that a games “flaws” are a core part of the experience.
It's fine if you don't like or agree with remakes!! Simply just don't buy it boom your pockets aren't damaged and it doesn't affect you in anyway shape or form!!!
No. Sqaure has shown what they do to classics. An ff9 remake not only wouldn’t happen for 7 years it would be another unreal clone void of all its charm. Ff9 is fine the way it is.
If it happens just simply don't buy the remake it's as simple as that and it won't affect you!! Plus if they did do a remake it's not like it'd be the end of the world!!!
FF9 does not deserve a remake All this remake ff9 talk comes from FF7 haters they made up rumors lies trailers because ff7 triggered some ff9 fans Besides the discussion for a remake was always between 6 and 7 If there is another remake it will be FF6
I'm with you, as long as they don't follow the formula of FFVII Remake/Rebirth/whatever's next. I'd be all in 😎👍

I thought I was the only one lol. As much as I love the FF7 remake/rebirth we could have done without all of the extra story bending.
If nomura gets to direct this, expect dumb time travel and or mutliverse plot ideas
Nomura is fucking poison who fucks up everything he touches. What an arrogant delusional twit
I heard that the ff7 remake changes weren’t pushed by nomura. Buuuuuut I look at kh, 3rd birthday, and other stuff he’s involved with and they seem to shoe in time travel

FFIX is definitely underrated and most definitely deserves a remake! Don't know if I've mentioned it but, congrats on 10k subs! You deserves it.
Thank you!!! That's incredibly kind to say. Appreciate the support!

Great suggestions!! Would be cool to see!
Final Fantasy IX also has really cute item and equipment icons.
Just upscale the graphics and add voice acting and redone cutscenes.

Being able to control when Trance moves are used instead of them activating automatically would be one of the best updates.
I would love a remaster or remake, I'd throw my cash at it as soon as it came to PC because I'm just about done with consoles.
After 8, then 9.

I have wanted to play this game for a while, as I always was intrigued by the character of Vivi in Kingdom Hearts 2
Xenogears needs it more!! 😆
A proper version that is a respectable game the entire way through would be amazing. Or even just a full anime version of the story.
It really does, specially that disc 2 part that was rushed. My fav game of all time
That would be amazing
10000000000% correct!!!

I'd really be interested to see another team have a go at doing something like this - we might just be pleasantly surprised!
Does the most special game ever created deserve a proper remake? I'd say so yeah
I wish they’ll make a remake with battle system just like the classic. Turn based, my team on the right side and enemies on the left side.
8 definitely makes sense more
I can agree with this!

What ever happened to your podcast? It was very enjoyable to get multiple in-depth interviews. I miss it
To be honest I just have had no time to chat with guests.
I would love a nine remake. I got the original for the PS1 and I played on my PS3 blue moon.
Alright, Erek... you're hired.
Ok! I'll start Monday!!!!
turn based all the way!!! all characters playable at anytime switch from roll to roll.
Id rather a 4k remaster were everything is just using modern models and all buildings and the overworld to scale rather than towns appearing small and expanding upon entering. That is literally it lol. All the story beats and mechanics that don't get affected by scale should be left alone.
for combat i would keep it the same but add the octopath/bravely system
In any case, I don't think I want a full remake of this game - I think if the game was enchanced and expanded using 3D pre-rendered backgrounds with more versatility and dynamism, I'd be all for that. If it was something like FFVII Remake, it may lose its essence and the stylization of the characters that is communicated so effectively in its current form.
omg I never realized it was the "eefa" tree.. haha. Or maybe I did? I honestly can't remember. But easy enough to mess up!!
Yes, we need this! But it has to be turn-based...
🐻🐻🐻🐻
🐻🐻🐻🐻
Metaphor-like style
This would be an instant buy. But I doubt 9 will ever get a remake like 7 did.
Either a single part remake or no remake at all in my opinion.
Im fine with a 3d ff7 remake, but a 3d ff9 would miss the point of what 9 is suppose to represent and its old style jrpgs.
A remake would be pretty cool! But maybe I should play the original game first before having any strong opinion about this matter 🐻
Yeah we gotta get you to play these games first!!!
@ErekLadd 🐻🐻🐻
Any backstory stuff we all know would be DLC
Both 8 and 9 need a remake
A pure turn based feel would fit well with this one. I don't think an action RPG is needed.
Dunno if you changed anything, but the audio in this video was particularly good.
FFIX deserves only the best treatment which makes me wary around a remake
Thanks! I use the same settings for most videos so I'm not sure to be honest!! 🤣
@ErekLadd glad FFIX caught you in such great form then!
Damn this reminds I forgot to make my video on this.
I wish it would. But I have given up hope at this point. 😂
Normies aren't gonna install mods.
I want a ff6 , 8, 9 remake.
Nah. It holds up. The psx version still looks great and has airtight gameplay. Ff6 or ff8 need remakes more.
Who's gonna tell him?
It deserves a remake all right, just not one like FFVII. What they should do is improve what needs to be improved and add what needs to be added. Just don't overdo it. Know what I mean?
All mods are for pc not everyone that wants a remake can afford a pc most ppl i know can barely buy a xbox series s
I think 9 is already top notch while a 8 remake has more to offer I think (though a tad more controversial I guess)
Lets talk 8 first lmao jk all for it but the 3 part plan just blows
FF8 should have gotten it first 😢
Dude called the Iifa Tree the "Lifa Tree." Disliked. Bruh. The tileset when you enter it literally spells the name of the tree Iifa. Like come TF on.
And no, this game does NOT need a remake. Deserves it, sure. But if it's gonna be like the 7 remake I'm taking a hard pass.
God forbid someone make a mistake 🙄
FF6 is the GOAT and didn't get a remake yet. Why the f*ck would 9 get one?
According to you!! According to others well Final Fantasy is a argued which one is actually Goated!! Now I don't hate FF6 definitely love the game!! FF7 on the other hand in my opinion not even top 5!!
FF9 was a more "meh" entry in the series. Most of the game is on the easy side of things.
Not a fan of 9 but I can't see it as realistic as 7 or 8.
@@thevangsta9892 and they haven’t gone back to its roots so what does that tell you?
@@thevangsta9892 oh you mean the setting. Well ff16 looks more realistic as art.
That's just me though!!
just don't bring multiple timelines bullshit into ff ix remake ;)
No, it's 6 turn next
They debunked 6!! Unfortunately Square backed down because according to them it'd take 20+ years just to remake the game because of all the characters all the boss fights and much more!!
Only if they make the minigames worth my time
FF9 does not deserve a remake
All this remake ff9 talk comes from FF7 haters they made up rumors lies trailers because ff7 triggered some ff9 fans
Besides the discussion for a remake was always between 6 and 7
If there is another remake it will be FF6
BTW 6 has already been debunked!! It's not happening!! 9 hasn't been debunked yet!!
