@@contemporarilyancient I was just using EU as an abbreviation for Expanded Universe. Some people also call it Star Wars Legends. It's basically everything that came before the Disney takeover. When Disney bought out Star Wars, they reset the entire timeline. If I remember correctly, they only kept the 6 live action movies, plus the Clone Wars movie and TV show. They essentially erased all of the books that had been written over ~37 years. If you ever get the opportunity to read them, I recommend that you start with the original Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Just keep in mind that they are two completely different timelines, and that the latest sequels (Force Awakens, Solo, The Mandolorian, Rebels, etc) don't exist. It's a lot to keep track of, but trust me, the old books are SO much better than the new ones. 👍

He had been trying to create a force sensitive clone that to take over if he died (I’m pretty sure he actually posses the clone with his force spirit, but I can’t remember for certain) it’s actually one of the failed clones that escaped and became Rey’s grandfather. But the one pulling the strings in the sequels is one of the force sensitive clones. They actually do make a brief reference to this in episode nine by showing snoke to be a clone

In his defense, he assumed he had broken Vader to such a degree, that he could threaten Vader and almost kill him several times without so much as a word out of place. It's only in the sequal trilogy do they make it that he assumes Vader will betray him. He even stopped following the Rule of 2, assuming his own power to grand to ever need to have an apprentice usurp him.

Vader planned on having Luke join him to usurp the emperor and even before that he was training Starkiller. Vader knew that his body was basically made to serve Palpatine so anything he did to kill him had to be indirect. And even then Palpatine's plan was to trade in for a younger and probably better Skywalker who would start the process over again. Which would keep his rule of 1 going as long as he cycled through apprentice before they had a chance to kill him.

Also, he never really believed in the rule of two in the first place when he started training Maul and then Dooku immediately after. The whole point of the rule is so the Sith can train in secret while the Jedi were the dominant force in the galaxy. What Palpatine did ended up being what Bane wanted to prevent as what should have just been 2 sith turned into the Sith making a reamergence, their revenge if you will. But your right he did feel safe being the emperor that it didn't matter even if it did make him a massive target for the Jedi.
