    I really appreciate you making this video. I think people (myself included) get too caught up in spending a lot of money to get the sound they want.

      For sure man! It’s easy to do! I think the main thing I’m trying to get across here is that it’s okay to allow yourself to get something that meets your aesthetics or makes you feel connected to something, but at the end of the day you should be able to make anything work!
      Glad yr tuning in!

    In the 60's I Heard Mississippi John Hurt live at a small gathering. I dig this show like the basement feel of the set.home like.

    They sound different, but both sound good. The Lyon & Healy sounds deeper and a bit richer to me than the Fender.

      Yes it’s amazing how deep of a voice that little guitar has! But agreed, both guitars sound fantastic!

    And for the record, the Lyon & Healy sounds better 😅❤

    Well. I’ve indicated before that one of the things I love about your videos is that they feel like “home”. I like old stuff also. But I am also and old guy so it stands to reason. If I was just listening to audio of some old music it would be different. But watching old music being played, the right “feel” and the right setting just makes it better. I have two Gretsch roots guitars. Bought them used. Both 12 frets, both cheap and both discontinued now. They sound old. I love playing them. (If you can call what I do playing! 😂😂). You’re doing a great job young dude. Keep it up!

    We have a lot of cheap guitars cycle through my family. My sister bought one of those cheap Fenders and we all agreed it was the best sounding of all of them.

    I love my Harmony H1215s but once I can afford a Martin CEO-7 I will probably never put it down. Except to play my Strats and my Tele.
    And for the record, the H1215 from ‘62 that was dragged all up and down the Gulf Coast by a tugboat captain for years and years does sound better (darker, woodier?, more warm and less resonant) than the pristine‘66 I just got. Which is also pretty fantastic.

    Interesting - I did think when you shared the video of the John Hurt tune that the guitar was less 'dry' sounding than I expected, but I didn't for a second think that it was the sound of a different guitar.

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks Год назад +2

      Dude I love that you remember that! I mean no two vintage guitars sound a like, so I could see why you’d gladly just adjust your expectations.

    glad I found your channel and subscribed. I like the topic of this one. And they both sound good. But of course, look who is playing them! I do prefer the deeper richer tone of the Lyon Healy . I have a mandolin my great uncle put together back in the 40s or so. His brother gave it to me back in the 80s. Being a horn player I wouldn't do it justice. I hope to one day come to your shop in Duluth, catch up with you and see what you think of it. Maybe shoot some video of you too?

    Everything you said is totally true and there are a lot of great inexpensive guitars out there. I am curious, how much setup did you do on the fender? As for the comparison, they both sound good. The sound of the older one I think lends itself better to blues style guitar with the smaller body more responsive body and what sounds like a lower action that gives a nice “slap” when you play the thumb rhythm. Either way, good work!

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks Год назад +1

      Thanks David! Good question, and yes, I did have to give the guitar a setup. But in all honesty, no more than a guitar of twice its value. String action and neck relief. But you're on the money, playability is everything.

    I've been looking at some vintage parlors recently. But the more I realize it, it's not the guitar, it's the player. Sure fit, finish, and age matter, but it's not the majority of what makes a song sound good.
    Excellent video, I was fooled lol

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks Год назад +1

      For sure! Yeah playability and time is the most important factors in my opinion. But it’s also nice to look at something pretty too to keep coming back to it after some hard practice sessions.
      Thanks for watching, sorry for the prank 😁!

    It’s true players bond with certain guitars. I have a ‘72 Stella parlour and it beats my other, newer resos for depth, bark and sweetness. Plus dryness and dust! Maybe they’re the magic ingredients. The test is this: If you could only keep one acoustic, which would it be? Over to you.

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks Год назад +1

      Haha, oh yes tone-dust must be taken in to account!
      Oof, so I have three main guitars, the fraulini, the L&H, and the one I made. I guess if I HAD to choose it would be the one I made!

    I was looking around at some parlor guitars the other day because I’m in the market. I find all kinds of options, but I told my son that I feel like I’m betraying who I am as a musician if I buy an expensive guitar. Feels like I’m somehow taking the easy way out…anyway, I’m not very good, so I suppose I’m just the right fit for those cheap guitars 😂

    • @kostringworks
      @kostringworks Год назад +3

      Could be true! But also, if you wanna buy something nicer it may inspire you to play more, thereby making you a better player!

    • @sc1915
      @sc1915 Год назад +1

      A musician friend of mine once said "your instrument should be better than you!". A low quality instrument can be limited in what it can do whereas a quality instrument can give you incredible inspiration! Having said that, I personally don't own anything expensive and I do have a couple of old Harmony's that I have no intention of parting with because they sound great.
      It's the player, not the guitar (as seen and heard in this video).
