There is an old Italian saying, “Translations are like lovers. If faithful, then not beautiful. If beautiful, then not faithful!” They who debate the merits of Fitzgerald’s translation forget this. Let’s take that which Omar urges: Push the debates, the analyses, the discussions aside. Savor this moment, these feelings, this beauty while they last. For we, too, shall soon be gone. Fitzgerald’s translation is beautiful, if not faithful, but let us savor the beauty while we can. I would like to know whose voice gave us this lovely rendition, for it is one of the better voices I’ve heard for recitation of poetry, this magnificent piece in particular, and all the other poems I’ve found in the playlists. Well done, whoever you are. It would be nice to know an email address to send a personal note.
A masterful reading as always. I'm definitely not just here to finally hear someone pronounce "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" properly, though. Perish the thought.
Thank you - a fine clearly spoken presentation. Just one point, Edward FitzGerald's was not born in the small and lovely town of Woodbridge, but in the village of Bredfield at Bredfield Hall otherwise known as the White House no longer in existence. Let us hope the man and his Mystic Masterpiece are given better recognition in this country sparked by the distance of time through next years 140th anniversary / celebrations next year. Beautiful voice.
Soft on the ear.
I just love the work of Omar Khayyam.

Yes! And thanks for your informative, horizon-broadening , thought provoking, perspecive changing (mine anyway) commentary.
