In today's video, we go behind the scenes on a night portrait shoot with Dan, shot on medium format film with my Mamiya RZ67, Cinestill 800T and Lomography Colour Negative 800 (both pushed to 1600 ISO).
It was my first time taking photos like this on film, shooting in such low light and with artificial lights on shoot, so a lot of learning curves but equally a lot of fun. I really enjoyed pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, and I hope you enjoy the video and photographs as much as I enjoyed creating them!

images like this are often not done very well I think but you absolutely outdid yourself here
Oh wow, thank you! I really appreciate that because it was definitely out of my comfort zone haha!
Sophia, thank you so much!
Thank you for watching!
Love that you keep pushing yourself to try new shooting scenarios Sophia, talent & courage
Thank you Gareth! Got to keep learning and improving where I can, even if it's a little uncomfortable to step into new techniques and scenarios 😂
@@SophiaCarey No one ever grew in their comfort zone
These 🤌🏾 *chefs kiss*
Thank you so much!
That's the best part of photography....Although sticking to the rules makes things "correct"; sometimes its ok to place your creative spin on things. The worst accidents can turn out to be the best pictures. Experiment to find your best shot. Good shooting.
I definitely agree! It’s all a learning and development (pardon the pun) process at the end of the day. I definitely agree that you learn best when you do things “wrong”. Thanks for watching and for the support, as always!
Push iso from 800 to 1600 that mean you should +1 ev when developing so nothing go wrong
Really loved that you showed the unedited version too. Love your videos
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
they turned out very nice! Good job. And I like the model as well
Subscribed, the red light deffo gave it that extra sauce
Thank you so much! It was really fun working with the artificial lights
Love this shoot & your work ❤ what lens were you using? Thanks in advance🙏
Thank you so much! For the digitals, I think it was a mixture of a 35mm and a 28-70, and for the film it was 110mm
Thank you Sophia, you’re a sweet. Hope to catch up with you one of these days on the road:)
Small light, big camera. Great job!
Hahaha got things on reverse to how they are usually 🤣 and thank you!
Oh man pushing it definitely gives it a whole different vibe. Loved the video~ also love how i feel like im learning with you throughout the process!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Some beautiful work here and Dan did great too 👌🏼
Thank you so much! And he did! Dan is always amazing to work with
These are 🔥🔥
Thank you so much!
Litterally just saw your shot on comethrough’s story! You shot right beside my flat too. So many other amazing photographers near me 😅🖤
Hahaha no way! I live right around here too!
Great video Sophia! I like how you are directing your models :)
Thank you so much!
@3:10 is underexposed in the BEST way! 🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful shots Sophia!
Thank you so much!
Crazy underrated
Ahh too kind! Thank you
Wonderful, as always!
Thank you so much!
love the idea!
hey, which app did you use to preview camera settings?
Hey! The Light Meter app is linked in the description
amazing video as always Soph
Thank you so much!
So different from your other work! Love how these came out
Also I'm for sure investing in that LED light packs so much punch for how small it is
Ah thank you so much!!
And yeah would definitely recommend it! Especially for event work!
You got some nice photos !
Thank you so much!
🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Sorryi couldn't subscribe but that's purely because I don't want to get into film photography.(saying this voluntarily even before fully watching the video) At least not for a long time. But I just want to add, your compositions and lighting ideas are fantastic, plus you're making informative content about them that literally any camera using creative can learn from, so thanks a million! Keep at it!
Also, kudos to the model Dan and to the videographer Hanna for working with all these crazy colors. Totally worth it!
Hey! Haha no worries at all, thank you for the words of support and encouragement regardless! I do also make videos about digital photography/photography in general though that you might be interested in!
Thanks so much for the kind words! I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again!
I really love your work and want to start photography and take similar photos like you but don’t know where to start 🙃 extremely underwhelming
Great video :)
Thank you so much!
7:07 good stuff
Ohhh it says LuckY you XD
That makes more sense
Hahahaha 🤣🤣
@@SophiaCarey those shots turned out so freaking sick though, love it!!! Definitely lucky me for clicking on this!
@@danklabunde haha, thank you so much! maybe that was my subliminal messaging 🤣

wish you used the tripod for your camera and helf the light with your hand. too underexposed and grainy for my personal taste. looks like a fun shoot though!
I don’t really get on with shooting portraits on a tripod personally, especially when shooting with a waist level viewfinder. There’s a disconnect I can’t get behind, plus the light stand I had with me for this shoot would not have held the Mamiya by any stretch 🤣 but definitely agree on the grain. I’ve since found out that this lens has a considerable amount of haze, so I might reshoot a similar concept with my new version of the lens (with no haze) and see if that helps make a difference
what lens you got on it?
It’s the sekor c 110mm!
@@SophiaCarey ooooh, yeah, your project's vision and that lens went really well together. Personally im a fan of the 65mm because of its almost 2:1 scale down of what i can already see. Im not sure what to shoot with it though.
@@jonathanclarke5763 I actually don’t have another lens for my RZ! I have the 90mm on the RB but nothing else for the RZ. I’d like to try something wider like they 65mm eventually!
@@SophiaCarey it's a really fun lens. Really nice for...omg that's it, environmental portraits.
Hey if you ever get one and do a vid on it, like your other vids, I'll for sure watch that one too ☺️.
@@jonathanclarke5763 haha all the more reason to get one soon then! 🤣
The film loses sensibility when shot under artificial light.
I always prefer shooting with natural light, I’m much more comfortable with it, but it was good to push myself out of my comfort zone and experiment with a type of lighting that I’m not used to for sure
Second video I've seen of yours and definitely earning a sub. Nice job!!
Thank you so much!
