It’s not a reward - it’s designed to be psychologically and physically taxing. They’re showing how harsh and dangerous outside is and then they swoop in with Lumon branded tents and marshmallows to get the innies back in line. Remember what Cobelvig said in season 1 about giving prisoners false freedom. It’s kinda like a sick human version of letting your cat outside when it’s storming so they associate outside with wet and thunder so they never try to escape.
Helly went from telling the speech at the gala to waking up while being drowned. When you think of it that way this is even more messed up. Poor Helly, she's been through so much.
Yeah for a split second probably just assumed she was being tortured for her actions. And then seeing it was irv must’ve been so damn confusing
And right after she said, “They torture us”
Irv may have left Dylan a clue re what he learned about the Exports Hall. His last words to him was, "Hang in there!" Wasnt there a hang-in-there poster in the breakroom?
The loss of Irving will re-focus Dylan to find out about that hall. After all, he declined to look for it when Irving asked him to join him. Dylan was too distracted with the family visitation perk dangled in front of him.
“Hey kid…” -Irving “what’s for dinner”…
Bingo!!!
I love that we are only half way through the season.... in many shows they would have had marks reintegration or this Helly reveal as the finale, but they didn't leave us hanging. We can't possibly predict what might happen next and I love the novelty of not knowing, as many shows are very formulaic these days.
yeah for instance 'From'
We ain’t even halfway through the season😂
@@Amziiwaugh YES! I stopped watching in season 3 episode 5 I think. Too much filler and character keeping information to themselves. So annoying.
@ i stopped after ep 3
It reminds me of the days when we were waiting for new episodes of Lost to come out.
I think Helena used Marks attraction for her to make sure he stays on her side when Irving ultimately tried to call her out. She called out for Mark first before Milkshake. Mark didn’t choose to go down the mountain until Milkshake pulled the walk-in out of his pocket. So a side of him was waiting to get the answer too. Cant wait to see how Mark feels about Helena’s betrayal and LAWD if Helena/Helly gets preggo.
Milchick with this dramatic ass "you're fired" speech at the end lol
Someone on twitter remembered that Gwendolyn Y mentioned having animatronic Eagan dolls for the perpetuity wing. So their “twins” could very well be animatronic dolls for MDR
it's frustrating to see so many reactors completely unaware the innies are mostly super inexperienced emotionally. And Helena, outright played on Mark's desire for Helly R. to deceive him into sex by pretending to be Helly R. which is sexual assault. She's also 100% into the Eagan cult and visited the waterfall for that reason. When she ridiculed the book's passage at the campfire, that was her splitting the group against Irving. She knows that Irving, like Milchik, is a follower of Kier's teachings. Bottom line, Irv was getting too close and acting too bold. Well she FAFO and he showed just how bold he was willing to become. :)
Irv rejected Eagan when Burt was retired (smashed the deviled egg in the guidebook while sneering at the Kier Eagan picture). Helena was manipulating Mark and Dylan. Irv told her to stop mocking the story because he knew she was the outie (but did not yet know she was an Eagan).
I think she was mocking the story to try to act more like her innie, since Irv was on to her.
@@LeVidocqagree, though it’s also possible Helena finds the mythology stupid, even if she bought into the corporate side of things. She was really overcompensating with Irv, Helly R would not have done all that imo.
(I agree with the original commenter though that regardless of the sincerity of Helena’s feelings, she deceived Mark about his identity and that by definition is violation of consent.)
Man two consenting adults having sex is NOT sexual assault. Are you mentally stable?
Britt Lower is such a phenomenal actor, I knew she was Helena before the first episode even dropped! Before rhe season premiere, Apple released a sneak peak scene, which was the scene where Mark and Helena are walking back to MDR after the Keanu video, and she asks him if he and Gemma looked happy in the wedding picture. Just from that one clip, the way Britt very subtly changed the way she walked and talked and especially her facial expressions, I could tell it wasn't Helly! Britt needs an Emmy!
Remember Outie Irving has been investigating Lumon. We will see him again.
The instrument is a theremin and it is indeed real.
@@jasonellis4998 This instrument is central to the show The Big Door Prize on Apple. Which is another uncanny valley kind of show, in its own way. Also really good.
@@jasonellis4998 Yep! The actress, 15-year-old Sarah Bock, learned it especially for the episode.
@@GiantPetRat She is not 15 , she was born in 2006.
@ She was 15 at time of filming, tho. At least, according to the creators' podcast.
@@GiantPetRat, but what we heard was a similar instrument, the Ondes Martenot, played by Theodore Shapiro.
We'll still see Irving. Remember in the phone both he told someone "My innie got the message." He has had some way of communicating between innie and outie, so I think he knew he had all the info he needed to be able to work against Lumon from the outside only.
The message was the painting, he drinks coffee and blasts music late at night so that he falls asleep at work. That's when the visions of the ooze come through. Sleeping is also when he had a vision that solidified Helena as an Eagan
Irving already wanted to di3 after the OTC; he believes Irving inee and Brut inee will be together in the afterlife. Now he got to go after sacrificing himself to get the truth out about Hellena
i think they’re still inside Lumon.
bc when Milchieck woke Helly
he “removed the block” rather than just switching Helly R on.
if they were outside you don’t need to remove a block at all.
Her looking at that cult waterfall with longing was the final clue before the big reveal
I interpreted it more as her enjoying some solitude in a beautiful setting after having sex (and as far as we know, perhaps losing her virginity). It’s perhaps the most peaceful morning she’s ever experienced… until it’s not.
But your interpretation makes sense too, it could be a glimpse into her devotion to Kier lore
I feel now that Mark is reintegrated, overtime he will eventually remember this occuance. Outtie Mark could get his sister to seek Outtie Irv out and start getting the help they're looking for, i mean Irv's dreams blended together and had his outtie draw in the first place, he will somehow remember and return
the question for me is will Irv hold onto his little notebook and question it or will it be hidden for Dylan and Mark to find so they can explore the dark hallway with all his "possessions" being taken away
The more I wonder why Helena Eagan didn't properly plan her story through when she invaded the innie world, the more something dawns on me. Helena Eagan might not be used to people questioning her at all. She might be used to people taking her words to be fact being that she is part of such a powerful family. Even if people don't believe a word you say, it doesn't mean that in order to stay in good graces with you, they too won't lie by saying they believe.
Outie Helena Eagan might be too used to thinking that people accept her words at face value.
Her weakness is that she is far too full of herself and thinks she is mentally superior to an innie, when in truth, she is far from it.
It's also satire about executives or managers in general. There are plenty of overconfident managers who think the lower jobs are mindless and then completely fail when they have to do them.
Been waiting for y’all! What a wild episode!
I get the feeling that the ORTBO is really just an elaborate ruse for Milkshake and Helena to torture the rest of the MDR team. Getting them out of the office and on this trip will A). delay Mark's further search for Ms. Casey inside the Lumon building, since Mark isn't feeling like doing any actual work there anyways; B). dissuade further desires for innies to see the outside or to sleep because the conditions of the ORTBO are grueling, and they are told ghost stories so that they could have nightmares, and C). indoctrinate them even further by demonstrating what happens if they indulge in the 4 tempers too much (and not serve Kier by being his slaves), they will end up like Dieter.
See how Helena is the first to instigate trouble when they are sitting around the bonfire, she very consciously undermined Milkshake's authority and made a joke, and that's when Mark and Dylan followed suit. And Milkshake then angrily discarded the marshmellows into the fire to show dominance. I got this feeling that this episode was rehearsed by Milkshake and Helena as a form of torture. Perhaps the promised "copious luxury meats" were never there to begin with.
And also, getting them out of the setting they're familiar with would heighten the innies' senses and sow discord among them.
On paper it does sounds like good measures, however they didn't expect the cover would be blown so fast, just because Irv has super strong spidey-senses, and that they overestimate the others' compliance with the company after all that went down.
Yes and innie was pregnant before, if u go back to season 1 they say it on the news, so that begs the question is hellena pregnant bc you know they didn’t use protection. She took advantage of him so sad
There was no elevator DING for Irving at the end of the episode to say he turned back into an outtie. Do you think Reghabi already started to reintegrated him and that’s why she said she’s better at it now?
Also! I think Petey stopped going back to work and that’s why he got sick. Maybe reintegration takes a while to kick in on both sides and your brain needs you to maintain a routine of being turned on and off until you’re balanced in the middle.
The ding is for turning into an innie.
@@LeVidocq the ding goes both ways
Until that moment in the tent with Mark and Helena, I had completely forgotten that Mark was reintegrated.
I think he’s not fully integrated yet and it will take multiple sessions. He was acting like full innie Mark throughout the episode, surprised at seeing fire for the first time, pretty cavalier about the search for Gemma.. until the reintegration kicked in for a moment and he got flashes of her. I don’t think Mark is a good enough liar to have been faking so well.
@@normaladjacentThe biggest tell to me is because outie Mark would absolutely not have slept with Helly. Being told your presumed dead wife is alive and then you sleep with another woman the next day? No way in hell.
I think Irving stopped being a true believer in S1 when Burt was “retired” and he became disillusioned with the idea of severance. Irv smashing an egg in the handbook while glaring at Kier’s portrait felt like the last nail in the coffin of his devotion to me.
I also don’t think Irv’s dreams were religious visions, they’re outie Irv trying to send him messages. I imagine outie Irv probably knows exactly who Helena is, and that’s how innie Irv, through his creepy dream, figured it out.
I can’t imagine this will be the last we see of Irving, but I’m not sure if we’ll ever see pure innie Irving B again. I’m not even sure if he’s actually fired from the severed floor, I feel like it’s possible that ding was just them wiping his memories (“clean slate” was one of the worst options along with “overtime” and “Glasgow,” which we now know is how Helena was on the severed floor). Though even a “clean slate” Irv with innie Mark and Dylan would probably be dangerous to Lumon.
I no longer think it's a matrix environment. Or at least, not with this episode. And when another RUclipsr pointed out a section of Petey's map called Team Building Room, it reaffirmed that theory for me.
Remember the second Mark innie in the first episode of this season mentioning that their Eagan museum had moving mannequins? It made me think of animatronics. So when the shadow versions of the 4 innies appeared, I wondered if they were animatronics because of the way they moved and stood. ORTBO also can be an anagram for Robot. Plus, there is the indoor plant room Burt showed Irv in season 1. And this season, Mark and Helly found the large indoor goat meadow.
But it wasn't until yet another RUclipsr mentioning about how Walt Disney had a brother that something finally dawned on me. The child like innies were placed in an indoor simulator constructed like a theme park ride. It looks massively vast. But in truth, the footprint is small. You are actually looking at a lot of forced perspective fx and are moving in a circle or spiral winding path downhill. You can't tell you are going in circles because rocks and trees are blocking your full view ahead. All just like the theme park rides.
It's like the Truman Show or the battle arenas of the Hunger Games. It's all a stage set. It's all an optical illusion. It's just like a Disney World ride. They think they are on an endless journey, but in truth, they are just moving in circles.
Yeah I was thinking that too. A sound stage would be a way to control everything but make them feel like they're outside.
I was suspicious of this too, but then again, the water drowning Helena looked very real tho
@yubinp1791 It's an indoor swimming pool shaped like a lake. 😉😊
If you look at the letters they only spell Eagan, also the numbers are representative of the letters in the word Eagan. They also form her face in that shot
Did you notice at the very last moment when Irv was being "banished" - the zolly shot was different. His face did not distort at all. The background distorted. Different than all the other zolly shots. And, importantly, there was NO CHIME! His implant didn't trigger. I don't know exactly what this means, but something was different. Has Irv already re-integrated?
I think the chime is the elevator. We didn't hear it in the season finale either I don't think
@ at the end of 1x9, there was definitely a chime. And we heard the chime at the start of 2x4 when we discovered Irv on the ice. And in 2x2 when the outties went down the operator there was a chime for each of them except Helena, for the obvious reason. The chime occurs regardless of they’re in an elevator or not.
I think it's for more dramatically depicting the difference between switching to an outie and being deactivated. They want it to look different because it's a "death" in a way and it wouldn't be as compelling if it just looked like the usual switch.
this show just proves itself to be the most unpredictable on TV and I *love* them for it! That's artistry! Great reaction as usual:)
Couldn't agree more!
Irvin was cold in this episode.
Excellent commentary. The Mark/Helly/Helena conundrum reminds me of Fringe.
Milkshake is a mountebank
Irving is ex military, we can assume hes still strong enough in his 60s to pull a woman half his weight for a few steps.
when Irv said “we should eat it” as his first thoughts seeing the creature, it scared and shocked me a little. almost like seeing his animalistic tendencies come out.
That was my first thought. Perhaps I’ve seen too many survivor kind of shows. Mark thought the fire was beautiful I’d of implying he hadn’t seen it before. I wonder what Irving’s plan would have been to cook the seal.
@@leeci33 Remember, Irving (outtie) has a military background. That is part of his training.
@PlayaP69 yep that was my thought too.
The instrument is a theremin!
The instrument is called a theramin. It's a synthetic instrument that measures the placement of your hands in the air above the sensors and translates it into the weird sounds you hear there.
This shit getting wild. Love yall reactions to this show
ORTBO = ROBOT
Why can't we see their breath in the cold air?
@@annetterendon392 It's so interesting because they did film outside in the cold!
You don't see your breath if the air has low humidity. It has to be cold and humid out. As mentioned elsewhere, they did film outdoors on location in the Catskills.
I love Dylan 😂 11:27
the instrument is called a theremin. I've wanted one for years.
I think Irving was reintegrated. His innie’s drawings of the exports hall match his outie’s drawings and we hadn’t seen that (drawing) from his innie in S1
Irving finally was the main character in this episode
The doubling of Irving's voice at 8:07 is weird. Is this implying that the "twins" are some sort of animatronics, and they have Irv's twin saying this through a digital recording? If so, does this have implications for the statues in the Perpetuity Wing?
12:05 When you replicate a person or living thing, either by CGI or (more often) in robotics, a less-than-perfect copy is actually repulsive to the human eye. If you graph "likeness" on the X-axis and "appeal" on the Y-axis, a copy doesn't have to be accurate to be appealing (think Hello Kitty versus an actual cat), but as the likeness of the copy approaches sameness, it becomes revolting just before it's fully accurate (think bad taxidermy of a cat). This dramatic dip in appeal just before a copy achieves full accuracy is called "the uncanny valley". It's an evolutionary thing. We've evolved to hate imposters.
those subtitles are cheeks
Ms. Hwaung is playing the theremin.
17:54 it’s the same instrument that was used to do part of the Dr Who theme. A theremin
29:25 this moment is so powerful for Irv. Loved it
Great episode. Enjoyed your reaction to it.
such a good episode
The instrument is called a theremin
Irvin will get unsevered like Mark did
mark isn't unsevered, he's reintegrated, that's different. Technically Pete's unsevered cuz his chip was removed at the funeral
This was like Kauffman and Tarkovsky had watched the 1st season then wanted to make an episode of their own. Not only is Milkshake a pure evil sociopath, he's also one pretentious prat.
I don’t want to be a hater, I’m sorry, but the girl really pisses me off with how she thinks she’s got everything figured out but in reality she doesn’t even understand half the show
Irv is a fit veteran. He wasn’t about to get overpowered by a debutante. I’m really surprised that you guys thought that he was going to be the one that was going to be hurt. He also has some investigative skills so he might’ve been military intelligence or even more than that after he got out of the Navy.
Yea that was weird. He’s an old man, but still a man.
The subtitles in this recording are so goofy
vanilla milkshake
I do not think they were outside of lumen. They are in a simulated environment in the building. Think about it - there’s no way the other three outties would agree to go just stand in the winter forest without any knowledge of what’s happening to them. Especially Mark
Plus the tallest waterfall on the planet is only 70ft LOL. That’s as high as they can get in the building .
It could be outside. And they are being lied to.
Petey’s map had a “team building” area…
each scene does not require a yt call to action
Irv! 😫
What if, inne Mark n Helena produce a love child
No way no one told me Milchick and regahbi were RUclipsrs
