@A_Name136 Observers only detect changes in blockstate. Writing on a sign changes the NBT data, not the blockstate

For that last contraption at 31:30, the tripwire hooks make me think that a CUD (Comparator Update Detector) that is paired with a Tripwire Hook is involved. Those things have a crazy amount of range for detecting tripwire hooks being placed, which is why there isn't anything inside the nearby walls.
I don't see any reason why a CUD wouldn't work for this
Good chance! I was already wondering if they have some kind of stupidly long raycast, because of course they would... only in Minecraft could placing a tripwire hook trigger a check for another hook for a long distance, and not have it be a surprise.
It turns out, we don't have to wait nor subscribe to find out the answer
I knew about tripwire hooks updating states even if not connected with wire, meaning you could update a bud powered piston with them for example (and use that as detector since you can't directly use an observer on the hook). He is probably using another way of detection but the tripwire hook part of it just has to do with it's ray cast/search range being really long.
EDIT 1: Just tested the detection range for the hook, it's a 40 block gap wetween the two hooks (hooks not included).
EDIT 2: Just found a way to turn it into a switch, you can place the hook onto a dispenser, detect the dispenser with an observer, point the observer into a copper bulb and use the signal from the copper bulb to bud power the dispenser. Now every time you place a hook it toggles the copper bulb.
I kinda suspect it's one of those event-queue-order wireless redstone transmitter systems, but using string blocks in that glitched invisible block state you can get by zero-ticking the blocks out from under grounded string.

I actually think I know what happened here, it looks similar to how you can use the damage a cactus gives you when standing on it to jump higher the moment it damages the player.

@mixednarwhal nah it's more complicated than that, because you need to be taking fall damage and bouncing when those 2 actions are supposed to be mutually exclusive, the reason you get the boost at the end might be the same concept but the way you trick the game into letting you do both is the interesting part

With c-buds you're able to detect *if the square of the inventory of a container is clicked*.
This means that you can have a beacon which powers redstone when someone clicks on the square where the item is supposed to go even without having anything in your inventory to activate the beacon. It truly feels like magic.

it's all below the floor. Tripwirehooks have a 40 block detection distance to other hooks so he likely used a BUD/CUD responding to tripwirehook placements and a simple counter so it toggles the lamps when enough have been placed.
@ZÏ̇̃ Tripwires should only update in the direction they face, but the range is 40 blocks so it could just be behind the dirt.

I guess the last mechanism works because behind the walls in 40 block radius there's tripwire hooks and two of them in specific directions have a single string connected to them and every time something passes the string it'll send the redstone signal if there's another hook on the opposite side. And because you place the hook it'll success on sending the signal which would activate the redstone wired to the lamps and if all 4 sides get to send the signal they will activate the lamp. And the last blue hook works because you place the hook and it updates the one behind the wall and the updated hook updates the nearby placed piston with slimeblock on the middle and redstone block on top, activating the mechanism and powering the lamps
