  • Video footage taken at Asojinja shrine in Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture, shows children slathering mud on a “daiguji,” a representative chosen from the shrine parishioner, during the Dorouchi Matsuri festival held on March 25. Designated an important intangible folk cultural property by the prefecture and said to trace back to the Edo Period (1603-1867), the rite is offered to bring a plentiful harvest. During the rite the daiguji is given copious amounts of sake to drink inside the shrine and is then led out dressed in a white hooded robe to an engraved stone guardian for the community located about 500 meters away. Along the route laughing children with specially prepared mud eagerly smear the figure as he stumbles by.
