- South Sudan Sunday kept hope alive that the Bright Star, the nation’s men’s basketball team, would win an Olympic medal after the East African team won 90-79 in their opening group C match against Puerto Rico, at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
VOA’s Muqbil Yabarow and Mike Hove discussed South Sudan’s chances of winning a medal at the games being held in France’s capital, Paris.

I mean... we know they are great pro players but it is still amazing. There are way more developed countries with more basketball tradition and more pro players that still haven't challenged the USA team as South Sudan did. And they just beat Puerto Rico, which, by the way, has many pro players at the highest level, too and has been at the Olympics many times. So it is an amazing achievement. 👏🏽.

It is from *the Sudan* that those tall African Americans originated. The term *Sudan* actually covers the whole of the Sahara belt from what we call *Sudan* through Chad and all the way to Senegal. Countries like Mali Niger and Senegal were previously called Western Sudan. Just like restricting the name Ethiopia to the country previously called Abyssinia when the name actually actually meant the whole of "Black" Africa. The Atlantic Ocean was previously the Ethiopian Sea. White people causing confusion and obfuscating the earlier perceptions of Africa before colonialism.
& the craziest thing is that the Arab invaders now think they're the real Sudanese forgetting we existed in that land way before they arrived... Just coz they didn't change their country's name to north Sudan & remains as Sudan doesn't make them the real Sudanese
