I was there for the ‘89 US Open and the ‘23 PGA. Absolutely love the renovation. Gorgeous property with so much history. What a treat it must be to be a member to be able to enjoy the two courses frequently. Would love the opportunity to play a course like that.
Love this course. I worked at the neighboring club, which is also a Ross design (Irondequoit CC) for years and always could see #14 and #16 from the 13 and 14 fairways at ICC. Seeing the redesign in 2019-2020 was a treat. Each week I watched Oak Hill get restored back to its original drawings from scratch. At first, you could not believe you were watching them dig up this world-renowned course but after the restoration was finished it made total sense.
Part Oakmont, part Bethpage Black part Shinnecock. Love the short grass around the greens and run off areas. The US open is a real treat when players are challenged with something other than just length and rough. Can't wait.
Absolutely phenomenal redesign. This has sparked a re-found aspiration to design golf courses. The bunkering, new green layouts, even switching the 5 & 6 holes to better suit the landscape were all extremely calculated and truly great decisions.
I’m a member at Holston Hills in Knoxville, TN, which is another Ross masterpiece. Due to budget constraints, it’s largely unchanged from its original Ross design. He truly was a genius and one of a kind.
That is a blessing in disguise. The idiots at my club had essentially a blank check to redo 3 of our greens 6 years ago. What they did is create 3 greens that each have maybe 3 pin placements, max. When it comes to a golf course, access to $$ often leads to dumb decisions.
Was fortunate enough to walk this course at today's practice round. Amazing hole designs, and the greens are definitely a challenge. Hole 13 was fun to watch greenside along with 14 to see the players have a go at driving the green!
Wow, great work. I knew Oak Hill was a great golf course but now I'm obsessed.. Those mounds, bunkers, and greens are just incredible. The things I would do..
As someone born and raised in Rochester it is amazing learning all these details about the gem that is Oak Hill. I can't wait for the PGA Championship and to watch the World's best tackle this course.
I haven't ever seen this course played on TV or really heard of it before. I'm really impressed by not only the original design but also the visionary leadership from Green in his redesign, it looks simply stunning, and while like a lot of other courses in its region/era, totally unique at the same time.
My old man's good friend casually mentioned he can get us on here, crossing my fingers that it becomes a reality. Courses like Oak Hill are why the majors are so awesome. The best tournaments played on some of the more historical and beautiful courses. As golf fans, I wish we were blessed with Oak Hill, Oakmont and many others on a more regular basis.
Donald Ross is my all time favorite golf course designer so I’m glad they restored it close to what he had intended it to play….should be a great pga championship!
I truly believe we are living in one of the greatest times of golf course architecture and re-design. Between Coore/Crenshaw redesigning Pinehurst, this amazing update to Oak Hill, and the amazing courses popping up (Bandon/Sand Valley/Sweetens, etc) this time period will be seen as a golden era.
I don’t think so. Too much maintenance involved with the current architecture trends to make these courses last when they might not be as popular and maybe struggle with revenue. The current trends are massive land, long holes with a lot of tee boxes, no rough, short grass everywhere, super fast and therefore flat greens, even trees are thought of as a problem bc you can’t grow grass under them… I would like to see an architect buck these fads but golf architecture is a very insular industry
@@SpeedzyWGJK I agree with all but the flat greens comment (Sand Hills is the template for modern courses and the greens are not flat at all). It is quite funny because the GOAT architect Allister Mckenzie touted the necessity of outlining holes with trees/wasn't afraid to make his courses "claustrophobic" - just look at Augusta, cypress point, and Pine Valley (the big three) - all would be criticized if built today.
My cousin got a round here through an auction in 1998 or 1999. I flew in from Chicago and played (badly). Tough course. My cousin had grown up on the edge of a Ross design, Brookside CC in Canton, OH, and when we got to 11 at Oak Hill it was almost identical to #12 at Brookside! Can’t wait to see the PGA with the redesign they’ve done.
Incredible job putting this video together! Loved the insight and cinematography. Really adds to the fan experience to learn some of the history and design details of the course going into the event.
Never heard of this course until now but those greens and bunkers are absolutely amazingly designed/placed/created. Can’t wait for PGA Championship. They’re going to have to be creative that’s for sure.
I was the front gate security Guard in 1980, as an 18 year old. I was required to accept and or reject people at the front gate, and was able to say good morning to all the players for all 4 days of the tournament. I even "told" Jack on the final morning that he was going to crush the competition today. One of my favorite moments was the smile on his face like he just knew it. Yes to this day I still take credit for his win at Oak Hill in 1980
I really wish this was a public venue or at least allowed someone from out of state to play that isn't a member anywhere! Can't wait to see on the TV coverage
As soon as I saw Andy wearing golf shoes I turned off the video... Great video!!! This course is going to be so fun to watch next week. Looking forward to more major venue breakdown videos.
Great video, really looking forward to the PGA; and we didn't even have to sit through 10 minutes of BS about the Bears and Browns before we got to the good stuff!!
Ive always wondered which golf course in the US would be my favourite amongst so many of the worlds finest they have. would it be Augusta? Sawgrasss? Pebble? Spy glass? Scottsdale? Bethpage? and the list goes on and on - after watching and reading about Oak Hills history and development and seeing what has transpired over the last few years with an excellent redevelopment and restoration by Andrew Green, seeing Oak Hill now in all its glory, this is a beautiful beautiful golf course and would say this is my favourite course - Im really looking forward to this weekends PGA Championship and see what the pros can do on such a beautiful and unique course.
Whoever plays golf in Long Island, Should come by and play Colonial Springs 😏⛳️ 27 hole 3 courses & the beauty of the courses and how they play are amazing!!
Would love to see a video on how molested or unmolested the West course at Oak Hill is. The East gets the fanfare of course but the West was a very good Ross design as well.
As a member of Oak Hill, I can tell you that the West Course's layout is pretty much Ross' original design. The greens have become oval shaped, much like the East course greens had become over the years. The West is a tremendous course, it's just too short to host a major Championship
What Andrew Green does will be a lost skill when a course like Panther National in 75 years will be looking to get that course back to the original Nicklaus/Thomas design which over the years had been lost. Ponds had deviated from the original shape, cart paths had been replaced and widened along the way. And the course conditions had never recovered from Hurricane Jaxon in 2071 which left most of the course underwater for 18 months. But Google maps will make it so easy to see exactly what the course looked like on opening day, the research will consist of typing in the name of the course and then taking a few screenshots. The club historian will be an AI talking tree named Wesley.
The comment at 9:40 regarding it was hard to take down Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus' tree was hard to do, had held Oak Hill back for years. It wasn't "their tree". It was a tree that Oak Hill out their plague on!! That attitude almost prevented this wonderful renovation to happen. Truth be known, there are still many trees in the East course that were supposed to be taken down in Andrew Green's renovation, but Oak Hill"s "Architectural Committe" won't ket them be taken down. Ironically, not one member of the Architectural Committee is a golf course Architect! It's infuriating. My family has four generations of Oak Hill members, including me, so i know what I'm talking about
I have listened to all the bs i can about this golf course and how friggin difficult it is. and i am sure it would be for me. I am a 24 handicap, 85 years old and hit my tee ball 175 yards. But, the pros can cover 550 yards with a driver and a 5 iron and if not they can certainly cover 500 yards with those same 2 clubs. As for your tough sand traps. Every shot out of the green side traps will get within 5 feet of the hole. Every shot out of the fairway traps will find the green or pretty darn close. These pros of today with their books of all the information in the world on each friggin hole along with their caddies that study this course and know everything, well, you have 2 minds at work and not the one mind that Hogan, Snead, Palmer & Nicklaus used. And believe you me there are times in a round of golf where two educated golf minds are better than one and I don't care who the golfer might be. I guess what I am saying is that these professional golfers during the upcoming PGA, in May, 2023 will eat this course alive and make it another boring boring boring tournament called target golf.
I had no idea Oak Hill was a Ross, or that it was recently restored. 100 times more excited for this tournament now
Ross bunkers 100%
I was there for the ‘89 US Open and the ‘23 PGA. Absolutely love the renovation. Gorgeous property with so much history. What a treat it must be to be a member to be able to enjoy the two courses frequently. Would love the opportunity to play a course like that.
By far the most fun I have ever had carding a 108.
I'll be there Sunday!!! So pumped

Great, classic course with some of the most brutal rough around.
Holstein Hills is amazing! I hope they never change that masterpiece.
Fantastic video, great work to the Fried Egg team for putting this together, even more hyped up for the PGA championship!

I grew up in Rochester. Oak Hill has always been classy, and it continues with this wonderful redesign.
Very well sculpted changes.
Wow, great work. I knew Oak Hill was a great golf course but now I'm obsessed.. Those mounds, bunkers, and greens are just incredible. The things I would do..
The course looks great. The changes to 17 with the mounds and 18’s green shape are subtle but very important
This is an amazing re-design (RIP trees), but the story told through the video is just as good. Tremendous work.
As a golfer from Rochester who will never be able to play this course, this video was incredible

10:55 mark where the voiceover says "You gotta hit a really good tee shot" as the video shows a snap hook 🤣
Got to see oak hill in 2019 for the senior championship, excited to see the redesign when I go to the final round this year!

Obsessed with Fred. When the music drops when he’s talking?!?!? Unbelievable. Perfect. Zero Fuck’n notes.

Awesome work gents. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
This is incredible! I'm heading up there to see a practice round for the pga championship and I cannot wait
Thanks for posting the video! I worked in the Architecture field for decades, this is a nice look at what goes into the work.
Great work!
Awesome video. Thanks for putting it together. I'm pumped to watch the PGA Championship!
Awesome.

Nice work by the architects. Always hard to be respectful of the past but carry through on a clear design vision.

Great video, but genuinely curious how no one at the course has noticed that Annika Sorenstam’s name is spelled wrong on her plaque
engaging information!
💪
Can’t wait to watch!
"Ok now lets do a silly one" - Garrett at the 3:30 mark (probably)

Parker McLachlin can help with those bunker shots. But seriously, nice video
Nothing crazy off the tee, but those green complexes and bunker designs are beautiful.
You should do a video on the most famous trees in golf
If I hit a ball in a bunker here... and it plugs...
what should I have for breakfast?
Is there a sale at the pro shop?
can't wait
Pretty surprising at 9:36 that the spelled Sorenstam incorrectly on the tree plaque.
Need a PGA at Inverness Club asap.
I Cnt wait to go

Well done. Course looks classic. Andrew Green did a really nice job explaining the process without making it seem like architectural masturbation
Oak Hill historian... so this guy is specialised only in Oak Hill questions and stuff for a living. Pretty impressive.
No...Fred made his living in the financial world. He's volunteers his time as the club historian, and goes a great job doing so.
@@golfrep2584 Mr. Beltz is a gem!
Andy - that is one violent swing. Be careful.
Every single green is elevated. It's a shame they didn't add in a few greens that sit in a punch bowl, like an amphitheatre setting

Andy what sort of lack-of-ankle-support Toms abominations are you wearing? We're getting old. Let's be smart.
Always weird when one guy thinks he owns the club, and there's an outsider w no ownership making the calls. When nerve meets God complex.
Amazing? I hope to have the privilege to play Oak Hill some day.
