What drives society's understanding of right and wrong? In this thought-provoking talk, futurist Juan Enriquez offers a historical outlook on what humanity once deemed acceptable -- from human sacrifice and public executions to slavery and eating meat -- and makes a surprising case that exponential advances in technology leads to more ethical behavior.

@Scott why do you think that way??
@Scott okayyyyy
Three words: humility, responsibility, and forgiveness. And be very careful with forgiveness because too much of it becomes permissiveness.
Forgive but never forget.
@@walperstyle i want to know.
@@walperstyle you don't even need to name, they come themselves at first notion.
...or impunity
"When you judge the past, your ancestors, your forefathers, do so with a little bit more humility, because perhaps if you'd been educated in that time, if you'd lived in that time, you would've been done a lot of things wrong.
Not because they're right.
Not because we don't see they're wrong today, but simply because our notions, our understanding of right and wrong change across time."
Chapeau 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I think the most important realization Ive had so far is "you don't know what you don't know".
That if anything demand a sense of humility. It is as true for me, as it is for you and everyone else. Judging gets us nowhere.
Judging is a natural instinct of being human, it's not about judge the judging.
I came to write a reaction a paper and stayed for the eye opening insights. Thank you so much!
An awe inspiring talk - well presented with humility and succinct reason... may our society take up this quest to achieve a better life for all. Thank you.
Excellent video ! The world is changing exponentially so we can't lock ourselves with some absolute right and wrong but we need to be more open-minded, humble and forgiving.
This TED talk came at such a timely hour for me. I think many of us are facing dilemmas in cancel culture as we see the face of communication change with the shifting attitudes of new generations expecting answers and replies within seconds.
This is very enlightening. Thank you.
Absolutely fundamental for a better internet culture! Goooood
Just marking my Attendance . I was here before this video exploded , and I definitely shared it with half a dozen people.
That's all people living today need to hear and understand. Congratulations and thanks for making it available!
An insightful one!!
Thanks for a great talk..
Wow! Juan, you did it again: shining a light into the darkness and hubris of our time.
Right and wrong has never changed. Only our perception of it
Also, what is changing is the priority given to individual freedom over moral duty .
Amazing, simply amazing
I love this talk!
There are a lot of people who need to learn to forgive others in today's world especially for misunderstandings and mistakes.
Dream on...

Tena koe Brother,
I got some good ideas from this video.
I am a New Zealander with a huge interest in history.
I have visited dozens of graveyards, large and small in my small country.
It is impossible for me not to be unceasinly shocked by the numbers of men whose remains or memorials I visit, who died at France, Gallipoli at sea, or other places, while fighting for freedom and peace.
If not the hundreds of battles, it is invariably November, 1918 on the headstones of previously healthy, active young people and their infants, that take much of my attention.
My interest in history, and my interest in scapegoats have lead me to ponder deeply about the evils of this world.
I have acquired much knowledge of the horrors of 31 years of last century. My deep interest in World War 1 (that 10 per cent of the population signed up to participate in), the resulting enormity of the flu epidemic, followed by a second world war and a holocaust that wiped out 6 million of people also related to me has had a very deep affect on me.
I have had friends who were either a child and "shot at" and injured "while crossing a border", or "managed to get out", whose fathers were injured by shrapnel, were traumatized, lost mates, or turned i to hard, nasty, abusive, violent, or silent husbands and fathers.
One friend's mother grew up in an orphanage and all her children suffered intergenerational neglect. The pain goes on, and on, and on.
It has been very easy for me to create in myself a deep, deep illfilling for Germans.
This happened.
Two people, before they died, instructed me to "never forget". (The holocaust).
I will write the end of my story here when I have time, later.
@@barbsmart7373 I would like to hear the rest of your story :)

Cool, it’s been a long time since I couldn’t see a whole Ted Talk or not change the speed. Great idea, and it’s worth spreading!
This is the kind of video I subscribe to TED for. (at least the first half of it, because the 2nd part felt like promoting again)
World need this message today ! Thanks 🙏
Thank you
If we can define ourselves as being humble and forgiving, help others develop ways of thinking that allow them to become more humble and forgiving so that we have a society that can be described as both humble and forgiving, then we will have left the world a better place for our descendants. All this happens through right relationships with one another and in knowing your own self as well.
True, I think self-awareness must be taught since childhood.
Excellent speech
Fantastic 🙏🙏
I agree except that you're missing ONE key problem in your analysis. All of these social media sites are designed to drive engagement above everything else. If the website design remains the same then this kind of trench warfare will continue. Whatever they need to do to get consumers to keep using their product they will do. It doesn't matter how positive or negative the consequences.
You're on to something valid here. throughout 2016 Facebook intentionally amplified hatred, fear, and disinformation of a paranoid and conspiratorial nature in American users of that platform (everyone should see the documentary "The Great Hack"). Ostensibly, this is because it improves their revenue--or so they would claim in attempted defense of their actions. Humans are genetically programmed to pay more attention to sources of fear and tribalism, and so social media with its rapid fire and fact-check-free formats are likely to make money and increase participation by such negative actions. Facebook was working in part for Putin and Russia, as well as making money.
A powerful solution to the problems this video identifies is far better education--of both students and the general public--in cross-checking claims, rational and logical thinking, and teaching people to use the scientific method to evaluate what is true, and what is intended to amplify our most primitive instincts.
amazing speech !!!!!!
How could i find better??? Thanks, that absolutely changes my mind
I was listening to a podcast, now I’m listening via RUclips:)

i prefer this way of presentation to the conventional one carried out in previous speeches. It's like watchig a documentary. Thumbs up to Ted

Refreshing talk. Thank you, Juan!
I love it❤
So... I'm German. Idk about the ancestors thing :')
I'm all here for finding similarities and not differences and for being understanding.
But I think you should still be able to criticize. That's like the main reason why social morals changed over time. Because people were criticizing these things that were widely accepted.
That line really catch my intrest "oppressing people and have a doubling in lifespan"
Forgot the "you can quit" before the "oppressing" part.
Me too but in a bad way, there is still oppression even though our lifespan doubled.
He make it sound like we oppress other to increase lifespan when in fact it's irrelevant and history proves that.
This is great! As a progressive thinker I would definitely be open to allowing room for conversation about divisive issues with conservatives who are trapped in their dogmatic belief systems.
That's why we dragged ourselves out of the dark ages. The value of the individual. We're heading back down that hole through identity politics.
The other side of the dark ages was better. The spread of Christianity was a plague on the world. Jesus was cool, his followers are NOT.
Idea worth spreading indeed.
Hiii So excited for this new episode !
I listen to Ted talks, and I understand that there are really smart people out there.
...and Empathy. Being able to look at another persons point of view with understanding of their emotional reality.
If right is only a matter of popular opinion, then I wouldn't want to have anything to do with it.
I take the truth as the highest value.
I don't humble myself to evil people, and I certainly don't want to forgive them.
Your arguments sets the stage for revising history to make the perpetuators look innocuous, and thus allow whole communities to go through a repeat of those wicked parts of their past.
If we are really interested in building resilient communities we must stick with truth and justice.
Humility and forgiveness always sounds good in other peoples lips, but never stopped the spawning of evil, in most cases meek and rescindable people were actively put to use by sinister groups.
Humility and forgiveness give way to gratitude, which is the weapon of choice by the depraved.
*Great view & observational comments. Rooted in a very solid platform that unfortunately if one considers the US, is largely blind to their own involvement in stated societal ills.*
Great
so incidentally, I have read the book " the consolation of philosophy" written by Alain de Botton. there is a chapter saying about right and wrong too. Why the Internet is so accurate now. Damn
He's absolutely right! This really validates the truth that there definitely is GOOD & EVIL...WRIGHT & WRONG ! no middle ground...and we really are just dust in the wind !
“We must create a space instead of a no man’s land.”
So cute ....
both the space, and no man's land are the same.
Nope. Stop over population.
Peace and love, fellas
This is what humanity is all about. There is no right and wrong. Right and wrong is a missconception, failing to see the bigger picture. Its also a judgement based on preferences. It's another way to say "What about me".
Social contract is real, environment is real. People can salt fields and ruin air. No man's land can be made. Cooperation or death will be had.
@@elinope4745 Yes. A challange the more unconscious humans are, and the natural conscequence of unclarity is disaster. We can choose to destroy this beautyful world, or we can build a paradise for the benefit of all. We have resources to do it, but the will is missing. It becomes a judgemental game of who gets what, in turn limiting the outcome. So the context is real, in all directions. However, there is no right or wrong - there is only what works or not.
@@theupl I agree, the will is missing.
It's making our life easy and give all people opportunity to develop their self also make all people equal
stay true to your truth and you won't have to choose sides
Absolutely
What’s acceptable or not, what’s normal or not, does not determine what is right or wrong
Exactly. Can't stand this deference to cultural relativism.

See you when this video becomes a high school English assignment 10 years later
Ah, you're right! It does seem like it'd be that sort of landmark video, huh?
It's a very important topic 👍 Technology totally changed our lifes
For the worst
@@scdhl3305 With each new invention the positive results have outweighed the negative ones. Even so when we learned to harvest nuclear energy, yes it created the most devastating weapons known to menkind, but it also allowed further continuation of exploring space and understanding science - science and technology improves our way of living as they are focused on solving problems, not creating problems.
@@anroidanicver6783
Tell the people in Fukushima daiichi, that nuclear energy is the way to go, that thing has been leaking since March 3rd 2011 & after the recent 7.0 earthquake, they found more leakage - they have over a hundred tons of contaminated water that they eventually plan on draining into the Pacific.
If you really want to move forward with technology and a reliable source of energy, start asking your Congress people to release Nikola Tesla energy.
And as far as technology is concerned, it's making people stupider, half of them can't even remember a phone number anymore and depend on their device, for everyday things that we used to do on our own.
It's become fashionable to change society through technology, not necessarily for the better, more like a social experiment.
@@scdhl3305 bingo.
The main idea is that tolerance is the key to the future
Out of this world! If this has you intrigued, a comparable book is my strong recommendation. "Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
I wish people would really believe this but ignorant people who can't employ such ideas (although most would agree with them only to forget about them later) are extremely common. Lots of people are bullheaded and arrogant and the fact of the matter is that people like that are rewarded by society.
This guy extremely underplays the role social movements played in shifting the overton window. All of the things we take for granted as "right" today were hard fought and certainly wouldn't have magically appeared just because of advancements in technology. Yes, technology can serve as the means by which activists further their cause, but they are not the driving force in and of themselves. Technology is simply a tool and in the end it is people who change our perceptions.
I disagree, in the last part he talks about humility & forgiveness. I think he wants to say that the combination of human & technology would create the best situation. At the end of the day, it's not about how technology changes us, but it's about how we use technology to communicate, spread information & knowledge with humility and forgiveness.
@@popcolgate9490 I think we are agreeing lol
@@petthepizza *I had to give you both thumbs up. Firstly he is talking from a position that was advanced by the very ills he descries. Humanity is humanity & as Pop stated that we ought to be aware of how tech changes our sense of morality but is not responsible for that part of society that has only been abated enough to meld to the current moral paradigm apprehension...*
Great talk . Technology is magical wonders. Society dictates right n wrong . Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true .
Your a cool guy
❤
I 100% agree with this opinion, however making another mankind suffer, sanction, war, torture and killing is always wrong, no matter what or when.
I suggest Peter Coffin's video on cancel culture
This states another point, which is when we going to face our fears of what we don't know?!
Technologi totally change our sense
really it depends on "source" of the sense.. is it culture, religion or ideology other.
not the whole human race needing to hear this
THIS IS AN AMAZING VIDEO
Uma coisa é errar e pedir desculpa sinceras. Outra coisa é manipular no famoso "morde e assopra".
Wow
Listen to this guy...and then listen to Lt dangle from Reno911...they sound the exact same 😁

Our generation will have to answer the questions: how long will a human be allowed to live, which microorganisms will we preserve/destroy, how will we rebuild the power grid, how will we prepare for the cold, what is the safest way to feed humans long term? Everything has to be rewritten. Because it has to be digitized and systemized.
I am disappointed at the lack of non-voters, the more non-voters means the more initiative for different and/or better policies to be proposed by the politicians and therefore a better candidate.
The senses of right and wrong is human trait and easy to manupliat by a lot of things.
i am a simple man. i see juan, i click

“Technology changes ethics. Technology is exponential.”
Pls Indonesia subtitle 😭😭
I need that🙏
I don’t think right and wrong really change. There is only one truth. It only the way we react to what we think is right and wrong that changes with time and technology.
Right and wrong is subjective although I think slavery is wrong and being vegan is right, some other dude might think slavery is right being vegan is wrong. There is no physical, biological law saying what is right or wrong.
@@joannot6706 The fact that slavery was practiced and tolerated for a long time, does not mean it was ever right or will ever be right in the future.
The fact that another society tolerated it (under false claims) or another person has a different opinion, does not mean there are two versions for the truth.
Accepting that the other is allowed to his own opinion, does not mean there are two version for the truth. And this tolerance of other opinion is what changes with time

I like this video; unfortunately, some people need to make and keep friends by believing what's wrong. It snowballs into the momentum of an obligation of being right when it is clearly wrong. That's why America has become unrecognizable to the extent that we all become in the follower trap at someone else's expense.
does anyone know wtf he says here - 7:13? "a middle ground, a ....????, and a space of empathy" ?????
*Religious moral conscience blindness to immediate personal proximal detection..?*
Morality will always be subjective.
Nature via evolution doesn't care about morality or mortality...
I don’t think that is true at all, slavery, cannibalism, murder, dishonesty ... will always be wrong. This cannot be subjective.
@@Mrstudmad they'll always be wrong, but to some extent they can be justified depending on the circumstances, which in turn makes them seem moral and acceptable to the people at that time and place. You'd be surprised what lengths the human brain can go to stop you from perceiving yourself as being the bad guy🤷♀️
@@emeraldivory7464 Agree. The human mind will always find a reason to justify bad acts.
Technology will change perception, will change social norms, but will not change morality or ethics as claimed by this Ted talk.
@@Mrstudmad I mean, we technically 'make up' ethics and morality.. something that was seen as moral in the past can be immoral now and its essentially due to us convincing ourselves that it is so - does that not mean that out morals have changed?
