My good buddy from Vietnam decided to homestead in Pelkie, MI in the UP after he left the Air Force. He built a very nice/cabin/home from the timber on his property. He and his wife have raised a beautiful family that should be featured in a Norman Rockwell painting. They are ready for anything that comes their way. A good life in a good place for good people.
Don't know how I got to your channel, but I watched Part 2 first. Glad I watched Part 1, because I had a number of questions .... including if you even still lived there. I lived in the U.P. from 89' to 98', so I was there during some of those big snow years you speak of. Love the shot of your stained-glass work for Iverson. I still have my Iverson snowshoes, and a beautiful fishing net I got from them. Yep, I was a victim of "life happens when you're busy making other plans" as well. I really miss the U.P., but did make a few trips back over the years. Last time was in the early 2000's, so I'm due for another visit. Take care Paul & Kathy (sp?) ✌🏻☮
As a Michigander, I found this to be a very nice story. Yours was one of several life styles I would have been happy to experience. Currently living on 10 acres in SE MI.
Enjoyed your story, nice work! I'm born, raised and live in Southern Michigan. In the early 80's I was introduced to the L'anse area from a friend who attended NMU.I became good friends with a local back then and we remain close to this day.He lives on the big lake near Pointe Abbeye.Another friend lives in the big metropolis of Herman. Incredibly beautiful country. How fortunate you were to experience that lifestyle at that time. Peace.
Thanks Larry. Not everyone there is homesteading, to be sure but there are a few. It's interesting, living with that amount of snow in the winter but like other places, it varies widely. Glad you stopped by.
I was in Ironwood on an April 1 in the 90s. This SoCal boy had never seen so much snow. Only half the roads were passable. People were accessing their homes from the second story. Quite a trip.
@Shelleys4Seasons True words. 👍 One winter I was able to STEP off the roof onto the snowpile in front of the house. Had to shovel off the top of the pile to see out the windows.
Great video, really interesting, for someone living just outside London in the UK 160 acres is unimaginable, here we often have just a few inches between us and our neighbours!
Stirred up so many memories of my own similar experiences of winter in the Northwoods! Thanks! Also, are you still making stained glass? It's on my bucket list! Lovely snowshoe ❤
Hey Paul, I like the idea of more stories from the upper peninsula. Perhaps you could call it "Tales From The UP." As always, I enjoyed today's video. There were many things in it that I could relate to. Anyway, as we used to say, "Keep On Truckin".😊
Interesting. Maybe CR 510 you are talking about? I have property near there owned since 1978. Almost everybody I knew from back then has come and gone. Just too hard. Lived similar but no longer live out there but closer to town. Still own the property and love that area of the UP.
I've always been in love with the UP and it's hard to compare the privacy of 240 acres to the 5 I had in Wisconsin. Plus, I REALLY enjoyed the off-grid lifestyle. I'm a Michigander at heart, so you can see where this is going. I 😄✌️
@PaulDeeds33 same same lol. Grew up in the thumb, moved to KY in 98.. we sold our 12 acres for 52 acres of raw land and will be off grid. I just wish I could convince all the kiddos to move to the UP and I'd move there!
I watch Surviving Ringworm RUclips videos. He’s in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan somewhere. He’s been there for five years or so. He started out living in a tent for a few years before building a tool shed he stayed in on the cold days. He eventually built a small cabin. He mills all his own lumber with chainsaws, an Alaskan sawmill, circular saws, battery & electric. He has mobile solar panels to charge his batteries and a charging unit. He has built many structures and other unique items. Earlier this year he got a Burmese mountain dog for company. He and his best friend bought the forty acres together. His friend is starting to build a cabin too but he doesn’t live up there. He comes to visit every few weeks. Watch him, he is very talented.

Sounds a little bit like heaven to me. Thanks for the comment. ✌️

Thanks, David. Glad you found the channel. 😁 The U.P. is one of my favorite places in the world. ✌️

Yes, I am a fortunate son. Thankful daily.
I feel it’s interesting to know how someone lives in N.UP. We hear nothing of this part of Michigan ever. Look forward to your experience.

Haha! That sounds about right. I was never too fond of shoveling the roof. ✌️
@@PaulDeeds33 Yes, but kids love to sled off it!

How exciting, love your story and experience, love that lifestyle ❤❤❤🫖
Thank you, Sharon!! ✌️
Enjoyed your video and subscribed. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Suzanne.
Welcome aboard! ✌️
Awesome!!! I’m a yooper born and raised by Big Bay 😊
Lucky you! It's a great area. ✌️
From Negaunee. Charming story, charming production. I’m an old duffer, but still spend summers in the bush in a tent camp…
Thanks, Tim. I've always favored the outdoors and a certain measure of solitude. ✌️
I used to talk about going to the UP. Nice job on your video!
@GrowlinWillie Thanks. It's a beautiful place. The Superior shore is my favorite.

Thanks, Malcolm. I grew up in Detroit, where the houses were a cars width apart. I prefer the open spaces. 😄 ✌️
Stirred up so many memories of my own similar experiences of winter in the Northwoods! Thanks! Also, are you still making stained glass? It's on my bucket list! Lovely snowshoe ❤
Thank you, Beth. Yes, I still do some glass but just for fun now. Smaller pieces make great gifts.
I'm grateful for all the memories of "up norte".

@bentrider Thanks, Sam. Not a bad idea. Opens it up to more than just homesteading. Hmmmm. ✌️

Exactly correct. I was west, off of 510 near Big Pup Creek. I'll forever be grateful for the experience. ✌️
My friend is fortifying a property very near the star in the thumbnail for the video.
It's an excellent place for it. ✌️
Wow I would love to have over 200 acres! What do you like better as in the area, not your family etc. UP where you were or upper Wisconsin?
