Thank you. I’ve struggled with the second part for years. I met Davey in a pub many years ago. Multi talented guy. So influential. He saw how nervous I was when I played and shared his own struggles with stage fight and anxiety. He worked with mental health charities for many years. The inventor of DADGAD! It’s my only claim to fame! Superb video. Thanks again.
I first heard this over 50 years ago and at the time only strummed chords. This suited me fine for singing with the band but my ambitions never even came near finger picking the likes of Angie. I started learning via your excellent tutorial at the ripe old age of 70 but have now mastered this instrumental even being able to maintain the speed. Cheers mate, keep up the good work.
You're the best tutor ever. You take it step by step and don't skip through anything. note by note you guide us through the whole thing. most RUclips tutors tend to rush the video and squeeze it all into 10min. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work :) :)
I'd just like to thank you so much for helping me 'get' finger style playing ( which really means being able to separate my thumb and fingers on my picking hand, which I've really struggled with) your videos have been a big help. And for any other budding finger style players out there who feel like it's something they just can't do, stick with it, I went a few frustrating months trying different lessons etc then one day it just all fell into place, I didn't believe everything I'd read/heard/seen about my thumb just doing it automatically but then for no other reason than practice upon practice it just all clicked and my thumb was suddenly playing the bass notes without me having to think about it.
Thanks Adrian, it took me a week and I've watched this over and over again, but I've managed to get the whole thing down now. Years ago when I got in to Davy I never thought I would be able to play this, but thanks to you I now can, so thank you so much!
Great lesson! I've wanted to play this for a long time, but it's an intimidating piece for someone like me who has little fingerpicking experience. Your tutorial is clear straightforward. I never thought I'd be able to play this song, but I'm surprised how quickly I'm advancing. Lots of hard work ahead, but I think I'll eventually get it right.
Wow, thank you very much. I've been a Davy Graham fan since my brother introduced me to him a few years ago, though I was too young to even know who it was, let alone play any of his songs. I also had a concert I needed to practice for (tomorrow, in fact) and even though I only started practicing this three days ago, your clear instruction has help me to pull it together in time. Thank you very much, and keep it up! I look forward to learning other fingerstyle pieces from your videos in the future.
A great lesson Adrian. As you say, anyone who is interested in folk music should learn to play this. You make it look so easy. Obviously, it's going to take me a little longer than you to learn it!
I've been playing the Bert Jansch version of this for years, but really like your lesson for Davy Graham version. Wish I could have seen this 50 years ago! I've really enjoyed playing this variation. This is a brilliantly clear tutorial of how to do it. An absolutely essential bit of finger style instruction. Probably best lesson I've seen of any piece - you have covered ever aspect of playing. I must look at other tunes you have covered. Cheers.
Many thanks for your cool patience in teaching this davey graham tune.allways been a favourite of mine and hopefully one day will .after many hours of struggling with it .I will crack it.
I've been working on a basic version of Anji off and on for a couple of years. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in to making this video. Good stuff, and I expect to adapt a good bit of it. Thanks!
Cheers for this Adrian. Excellent tutorial. One tune I've never got around to learning - fear I think!! So much easier to learn from someone playing it correctly than tabs, I'm impressed at how you can play it slowly and maintain the correct timing - skill!
You have a new subscriber. You have a superb, articulate teaching style and your playing is as clean as a whistle. Lovely Martins you have there too. Top job lad.
You're n.1. Big up Adrian. Been following you for a couple of weeks thanks to this Quarantine mess. Found again love in playing guitar. Had to buy a cheap but pretty lovely Parlor. The new Gretsch Jim Dandy fits perfectly to this song....keep following you chronologically from the very beginning. Guess I'll improve an awful lot with you. All the very best from Italy
I wasted a lot of my youth on this lol. Glad the original wavered because so did my version lol. I wasn't fast enough to play the first riff twice. so I just did it once. The rest i managed to play. Will try it your way when i get another guitar. My guitar was stolen. But you have inspired me to get on it and find a guitar.
This was an amazing lesson, i havnt found anyone else on youtube that can beat your teaching style, Thank you :).. i dont supose theres any chance you could do Davy Graham's grooveyard?
Adrian, this is superb: both the playing (you seem to capture all DG’s nuances) and the instructional aspect are among the very best to be seen on RUclips. Ditto for Bert Jansch’s Needle of Death tutorial. You really should think about turning professional 😉
Do you think it is easier to learn it this way rather than holding down the full chords and playing the appropriate strings using natural finger-style methodology? For example, in section "B" instead of moving the fretting hand and 1st & 3rd fingers from the 1st fret to the 2nd fret, for the 1st part you would simply keep your hand in the same position to play within chords Am7, F and E7.
Ok...now that I have watched, I have to get my guitar out and give it a shot. I haven't been playing lately, so this will be a challenge for my old brain and fingers.
Thank you, Adrian. I had only played Bach pieces on my classical guitar until I watched a video of Bert Jansch playing Anji. Luckily, I watched this instructional video by you. I now copy your fingerpicking style with ring finger for 1, middle finger for 2, index finger for 3, thumb for 4, 5, 6. It only took one day to get comfortable with it. Not a lot of hammer on pull offs in my classical pieces so still practicing main theme. What music software do you use to create sheet / TAB transcription ? A fan of your work in Arizona. 5:34
bravo Adrian, excellently played. I remember try to play the basic riff of this when I was about 14 it took me hours and hours but got there in the end, wonder if i still play it now?
I've got to say this stuff is great! Really good lessons and taste in music! Keeping me busy these days Adrian , ever thought of doing some sonic youth or pavement? Other end of the spectrum I know. Thanks again!
Thanks a lot. Yes, love both SY and Pavement. Might try something along those lines in a future lesson. Problem with SY - and sometimes Pavement - is those pesky alternate tunings which makes everything really difficult to figure out and sometimes requires different string gauges etc...
Just subbed you ~ I follow quite a few tutors on here and . . . you are brilliant! Do change a thing about the way you teach it works. Thank you, so much. Look forwards to watching further vids from your channel.
Great playing. This tune was a rite of passage back in the day. If you could play it you were a proper guitar player. Question: is it interesting to listen to or do we just admire the technical ability needed to play it? After you listen to it once do you want to hear it gain straight away?
Very nice rendition! I didn't hear you hit the High "E" in during the song. Was it because Paul Simon's version was not exactly how Davey actually played it? Thanks very much for sharing this Gem with us. Love and blessings from Michigan.
The first version of this I heard was by Bert Janch (which is still my favourite) and I spent hours replaying bits on my old record player and trying to copy playing it on my guitar. I eventually managed a pretty close version which I still play today. I think the first version of a song you hear sticks with you and nothing else sounds quite right. I like the original by Davy Graham but not so keen on Paul Simon’s effort.
Hi Adrian. A very good tutorial. You really have given some thought on how to help us beginners learn something inspirational. Now that I am armed with your tutorial and Tab I will work hard on this. Do you have other Tutorials and other Tabs. I am quite happy to pay for similar instrumental works. I believe an artist should be paid for his services.
Thanks a lot. I'm glad the lessons have been helpful. Yes, most of my lessons have tabs etc. on the website. All free at the moment. I don't make any money directly from doing the videos, but it's lots of fun and good promotion for my music, and private lessons too.
Did he give any tips/ say how he dealt with stage fright?
I first heard this over 50 years ago and at the time only strummed chords. This suited me fine for singing with the band but my ambitions never even came near finger picking the likes of Angie. I started learning via your excellent tutorial at the ripe old age of 70 but have now mastered this instrumental even being able to maintain the speed. Cheers mate, keep up the good work.
Well done!
Yes the repertoire is steadily growing thanks to Adrian. I’m now half way through Vestapol and loving it!
Cheers to you!!
A video you recorded 6 years ago is still helping us all out.
Thanks for your time and clear instruction.
You're the best tutor ever. You take it step by step and don't skip through anything. note by note you guide us through the whole thing. most RUclips tutors tend to rush the video and squeeze it all into 10min. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work :) :)
mike kram Thanks for your kind words Mike. Very pleased you enjoyed this lesson.

One of the best song tutorials I've ever watched. I bow to your geetar teaching mastery. Thanks!
Three years after you made it, this video is still being used and being useful! Thanks:)

What a lesson. Perfect, thank you. It made a difficult tune realistic. Can't wait to learn more.
scott eagle Thanks very much Scott - glad you liked it.
I've never heard that before. Shades of Windy and Warm Doc Watson. Great lesson
You are an amazing teacher!
Thank you so very much 🙏👍
Hey Adrian,
Thank you for your company over the last few weeks learning this song. Great lesson.
A great lesson Adrian. As you say, anyone who is interested in folk music should learn to play this. You make it look so easy. Obviously, it's going to take me a little longer than you to learn it!
Four people bought an expensive guitar, but have long since given up.
Excellent lesson - thank you very much, Adrian ;-)
Ha, thanks very much!
Definitely one of the best tutorials seen here on RUclips. Hope to see more fingerstyle pieces from you!

Thanks a lot, that's very kind. I'll try and get round to looking at some more fingerstyle pieces very soon. Maybe some Bert Jansch would be good.
I love the way Bert Jansch plays this too. So maybe in the future. I'd need to get practising first though, that's for sure...
That song was my nemesis. Started playing 20 years ago but have not played in 15. Really should give it another bash. Good video.
This rocked! seriously i mean this one of the best tutors on the internet.
Kudos on a great instructional for a tune I have loved for decades.
Oooh, just stumbled on this lesson! Christmas in September. Love Anji.
Thanks!
What a well crafted lesson Adrian! You have an impeccable selection of songs and I'm looking forward to learning many more. Thank You, Brian
What a teacher..top shelf! Thank you Adrian..happy to support you on patreon..Cheers
Cheers for this Adrian. Excellent tutorial. One tune I've never got around to learning - fear I think!! So much easier to learn from someone playing it correctly than tabs, I'm impressed at how you can play it slowly and maintain the correct timing - skill!
Thanks a lot Ben. I've always believed you need to master something slowly first, and the speed kind of takes care of itself.
Thank you very much for a fantastic lesson, I'm having a lot of fun fumbling my way through this. Good work.
That's one sick ending melody! Great lesson by the way.
You have a new subscriber. You have a superb, articulate teaching style and your playing is as clean as a whistle. Lovely Martins you have there too. Top job lad.

Really enjoyed this guy's style of tuition. Helped a great deal.
Lovely playing well executed and a slightly different variant again...that piece gives more all the time.
Thanks for taking your time to explain this one in such detail. It'll take me a few weeks I'm sure but I've got time.
Ok, took me three months but hey, I managed to do it :) Thanks a lot for the lesson!
Thanks! Been wanting play this for 25years
Great lesson. Clearly and carefully explained. Many thanks.
Great lesson, thanks ever so much. I've wanted to play this for as long as i remember. Just getting stuck into it now .
Thank you very much. I feel so good when I play it, you did a great job.
Nice explanation. Thanks . I am able to play it slowly now.
You're making my day mate!
you're an incredible teacher. Thank you for posting this and being so awesome! :)
Love your teaching Bro... I learnt this year's ago Bert Jansch style but much prefer this with no capo....im going get on it...
a truly excellent lesson
Love the lesson, I'm so far from playing this, but will start at the beginning
Thankyou for this it really helped me along
I wasted a lot of my youth on this lol. Glad the original wavered because so did my version lol. I wasn't fast enough to play the first riff twice. so I just did it once. The rest i managed to play. This little tune became an obsession for me and I never really felt like I did it justice.
This was an amazing lesson, i havnt found anyone else on youtube that can beat your teaching style, Thank you :).. i dont supose theres any chance you could do Davy Graham's grooveyard?
Awesome tutorial. Well played.
Brilliant tutorial, thank you so much for your efforts mate.

Sick piece, awesome performance, great tutorial. Thanks for sharing ;)
Thanks. Great lesson, easy to follow and clear.
Could you make a lesson for the Paul Simon version too? Love this version, but both is unique in their own way.
thanks heaps! love the detail very clear and easy to understand

Thank you - I will try to learn this :)
Very helpful lesson. Thank you. Maybe you could do a tutorial on one of the Bert Jansch versions too?
Great video Adrian ... I will be practicing this one! :)

Hey Adrian, could you possibly do a lesson for windy and warm by Chet Atkins? It's such a great tune.
