Here's the video about planting in the grow bag • Double Your Potato Yie...
Im glad i found your channel cause the way society is looking... chits about to hit the fan
YES!!!!... YOU DID IT!!!.... hahaha good job my friend lol
😂😂😂
Lmao. Yes indeed. You got that right.
I`ve planted sprouted potatoes in winter here in zone 8a central Louisiana. Freezes killed the stems/leaves but they re-grew. By February I had mini potatoes and some larger ones. The ones I planted were about to rot. My experiment worked though. I planted dry beans from a food pantry years ago and cooked the whole bean pods. I have no car so if I want fresh food I have to grow it. I have indoor and outdoor food growing right now. I have a MASSIVE mustard and turnip greens harvest right now. I`ve never seen mustard leaves this big...some are three feet long. Grown organically.
I watch a lot of different garden, farming, and homesteading channels on RUclips, most of them for inspiration. Your channel is one of the ones i watch for techniques and knowledge.
This is my first time watching your video. You answered my potato questions in the first two minutes. Thank you. ❤
Another gardener that I've watched before likes to hear himself talk. By the time he gets to the point, I'm lost, dazed, and confused. Thank you for educating us without confusing us. 😊❤
Thankyou! Finally a clear explanation of when to plant potatoes.
We finally got all our potatoes planted out . We got 3 different ways we planted in wood chips , half composted leaf and grass clippings and in just soil . I guess we will see what does the best in the end . Thanks for sharing and have a great evening !
I hope you are documenting the process!!!!... I'll be interested to see how the wood chips method turns out
Have you harvested the potatoes? Could you share the results ?
One video and you got me. Great information, to the point and I like your style.
Just feels like two friends talking. Not a fan of the over enthusiastic loud creators
Thank you; I’ll be watching all of your videos over time
I'm happy you are here Princess.... let me know if you have any questions or video idea suggestions
@@gardenlikeaviking helping us prepare for the coming shortages is critical Thank you again.
Thank you! Excellent tips and I look forward to the harvest time.
Thank you! I’ve watched a couple of videos and read several sets of instructions and yours is the simplest to understand. I appreciate that!
Getting ready to plant mine in 5a! Great videos, Thank You!
Thank you. Probably the best video with all the information I need about planting potatoes.
Thanks for this video! Much appreciated information. 🙏
These vids are great - very helpful and simple etc. Loving it. Thanks.
Great simple and short explanation of the whole process, and done correctly! Definitely subscribing to check out more videos.
My Mexican neighbor yelled at me once , "Your dog eez 'chitting on my grass!" I'm a crappy neighbor apparently 😂
Excellent info - Thanks - Linda from Let's talk Prepping recommended you - very glad she did Look forward to more and going through your library - much to learn - Happy digging in the dirt!
I'm happy you are here Colleen... Linda is wonderful and I appreciate her channel and information!!... let me know if you have any video idea suggestions or questions
My momma told me: Dirt is what you track into the house & Soil is what you plant in. ❤😂
Thank you so much for such a wonderful explanation of early, mid & late potatoes.
Thank you for great teaching and answering a previous question! You inspired me with the bag potato video and then another potato guy came through my feed and he said to get “seed” potatoes online! He said the plants won’t be healthy if you don’t. 🤷♀️Now this video from you confirms that is not true. Since I don’t have a clue what I’m doing yet, it’s confusing at times as you try to learn.
ok thank you for the input and I should've addressed this in the video... "Seed" potatoes just means they come from a place that guarantees they do not carry diseases already... I think I will make a video about this real quick... thank you!!
@@gardenlikeaviking Thank you! And you've asked for video ideas... What about microgreens if you have knowledge to share about that...? Very intriguing
So, in a pinch can I try and grow from store potatoes that have already sprouted? Don't want to waste my time but would love start with things I have!
This is my first time planting potatoes I'm useing the bags I live in pittsburgh pa I picked up the seeds today crossing my fingers
Real useful advice
Thank you I am ready to get the potatoes going. Must wait a few more weeks.🥔
You are welcome Linda and let me know if you have any questions/video ideas
Thank you!! A wonderful, easy to do, explanation!
Thank you so much for the great videos your awesome for taking the time to share your knowledge
you got a new sub, almost just from the name which made me laugh *and* click, but great info and presentation. one step closer to 100k now!
Thank you for all this excellent info. I guess this is a very good week to get outside and cultivate the ground in zone 8. I am gonna try your bag method. Watched before this one. I am new to prepping but I bot this mini acreage in 2017 so I have the room and the coop. Seeing how the world news is going it is apparent that I am late to the game. Woody Allen said show up, but now it is show up and dig in. In black plastic bags that is. 😊
thats right my friend its best to begin growing the calories now!!... potatoes... sweet potatoes... winter squash... beans... corn... all that can be dried and stored without Refrigeration
hallalujuh !!! proper logic at last...thank you
Thanks for your explanations.
Hi
I like your presentation.
I wanted to say though I am pretty sure potatoes have adventitious rooting and that is one reason for buryingbthem deeply and that spuds may grow out of any layering of the burried plant material although they might not be so large and might simply be tiny and numerous.
Also when a potato is divided for planting it needs to be set out to ' suberize' that is dry down and develop a skin over the wound to attempt to stave off disease. In my experience cut potato plantings are more susceptible to disease and give a smaller plant structure and lesser yield.
Love your videos. Thank you
Helpful tip: if you do have a potato that gets exposed to sun and turns green it's still good for a seed potato. Just don't eat the green potatoes but any grown from the green potatoes are just fine to eat.
Thanks very informative
I'm here refreshing my memory.
I once planted potatoes on a river bank. Nothing but sand. Months later , i dug em. They had little sand indents all over &
Very tough hides. I ate em 😋...
If there s one side to spoil with good soil for the potatoes to grow.
Is it under the potatoe seeds, or over?
From where will the seed get its vitamines?
Do i need to leave food scraps on the base[+soil]
To provide fertiliser element?
I ve just had my 1st early potato harvest
I had: 1:3. Or 1: 4 in ratio
Is that good?
We live in uk wales
Terrible rainy weather
All in pots
I thought r=they would have been soaking wet.
No, in fact they were quite in dry soil/ moist soil!
Beautiful , they were , but i thought i]there could have been more time left to let them grow…100days
Back in the late 50-s I would help my dad plant potatoes, One potato could do 5 plants - and we did plant thousands of spuds for trade for meat and other goods... Carrots thousands - we ate a lot of stew... hahahha .. we would put a silver 25 cent piece (80 +%) in our milk to make it last longer, seem to work... Had no fridge.... no TV, was not available for at least 20 years... A wise man once said. -- "The Times They Are A Changing"
wow I've never heard of the silver in milk thing but that makes sense as silver is highly antimicrobial in nature... thank you for sharing!
I’m hoping times like he’s talking abt return to the USA SOON! We are on a downhill slide into satanism and we need to reverse such ideas.
Hi love your videos, I hope to find a video where you show yield from massive seed potatoes and small or even select cuts, as I have cut spuds 4 times and grow from them BUT I don't have the best soil right now to see if I am getting more from the complete spuds the larger spuds or the sliced sections. I'm guessing it's irrelevant other than the stored energy to get to the surface and get a jump start. Also it's weird to find the seed potatoes after finishing growing a new load of spuds fell and look 100 ready to eat.... okay not as nice looking as the new one but you know what I mean, have you tried to replant and already seeded potatoes? Or even eat one? Cheers
I guess there is truth to the old Inuit saying "Vegan means bad hunter". I am viking and I hunt well, but my vegetable garden does not do so good I must admit, works both ways then :)) Are you in the old country ? I always seems to miss those season shopping windows; Where and when do shops carry set potatoes ?
Noob here.. so would you save potatoes all winter to grow for the next season? And do you have to start growing those tubes off them before putting them in the ground? If so when to do you start and how? Sorry for all the questions thanks in advance
You are a good teacher. I will be planting potatoes for the first time this year. Question I live in Michigan and its been rainy and cold. Can i put them in a box like that under my grow lights to do the chitting process? I know idealy sunny warm....but again lol MI. Thank you. You would be great at doing in person classes or I could see you as a horticulturist too . Thanks for the info
I’m in northern mich and planting mine in the garden today/tomorrow. I plant a little deeper than average and if they sprout above ground b4 last frost it will kill the sprouts but not the plant they will shoot right back up. U can also cover them if that’s a possibility for u.
@jimmylarge1148 I appreciate the reply. Since I posted this I did put them under my grow lights and some in sunny window on sunnier days and they are beginning to sprout.
I'm trying to revamp the whole garden area with poly tunnel and plan on putting these in grow bags. I will be hopefully getting them planted here soon
Thank you, great video first time planning potatoes in a few buckets
My Man, do you use brought chitted, chitt your own from the supermarket or reuse your harvest?
Thanks
Adam
What are the stages for red rose potatoes good sir. I'm a beginner on the patio gardener. So far I've only grown cherry tomatoes with a good harvest this month
Can you hold onto ones you haven’t planted yet or do they have to be used in one season? Thanks
Question- I planted too close to oncoming 1st frost, now in NJ. (learned from you)
So- should I just TRY to see what might happen? Can I cover over top of bag with another black bag, just take off during nice day temp.?
Trial & errors ......
definitely you can try!!... hopefully you planted a fast growing variety
Thanks
Watched the potato bag video, made a potato bag row. My compost however is very woody as I typically mulch with my compost. Should I be picking out as much of the woody bits as I can to fill the bags with or will the woody bits be fine?
the woody bits themselves won't be a problem but if the bag is filled with compost that is only partially finished and wood based then you may run into nutrient availability issues... be sure to use plenty of liquid nutrients such as any of the various fertilizers on this channel
@@gardenlikeaviking oh I'll definitely be doing some JMS soon and I want to make LABS. Hopefully the woody bits won't tie up much nitrogen but I should be good. I had found some lawn bags filled w/ old mulch that I put in my compost I did also add a ton of coffee grounds to "load" the N back in there. Thanks 🤘😎
Can you use grocery store potatoes and how do you sprout them before planting? Thanks
yes grocery store will work but try to get organic ones.... non organic usually work also... put them in a sunny window for a couple weeks to sprout the chits
@@gardenlikeaviking I’ve noticed the Yukon Golds are not as plentiful or perhaps their name has changed to Yellow Flesh? I guess I should ask my buddy as he was one of horticulturists that developed the Yukon Gold.
CHIT CAN HAPPEN! 😂
Thanks a lot
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can I still plant 2 weeks before the first frost if I’m planting in grow bags?
you'll have to keep an eye on the forecast but yes just so long as its not in danger of freezing the bag solid... I grow some potatoes in bags and this year I'll be planting two weeks before last frost no problem
First time gardening😊Can I plant potatoes that are turning green?
yes definitely!
Is you don’t notice a difference in yield (assuming you mean yield on a per plant basis), help me understand why you wouldn’t cut the potatoes to get more plants?
because IME a cut potato is many times more likely to simply rot in the ground compared to the whole potato which almost never rots and always produces
My potatoes have giant sprouts - I kept them in a wine fridge trying to keep them from doing that . . .
Is it ok if my potato seed is a little soft
Yes
Nice video.
I cut mine because you can get three or four plants from one potato.
For the YT algorithm
Are these big plastic bags food grade?
What if you get no frost?
I sprouted them waaay too early. 🙁 It is my first time and I misjudged the time it takes.
Will little potatoes the size of a marble grow?
Yes they will … Plant them
@@gardenlikeaviking Okay, Thank You!!
Please list potatoes that grow above the seed tater.
If you have to take a shit, is it better to do it before, or after planting potatoes?
*chit
@@gardenlikeaviking oh, right
What's your favorite early season potatoes?
PO-TA-TOES.
What’s taders precious?
ALL late season potatoes set potatoes in several layers. Only early season potatoes set on a single layer
I've seen on other videos that you bly want two eyes per potato you are to cut the others off
I was told that the more chits it has, the smaller the growth of the potatoes, true or false.
more chits means more vines and more numerous potatoes and yes if potatoes feel crowded they'll grow much smaller... so if big potatoes is your goal then give plenty of room or reduce to 2 chits
How deep?
Why is it that every other video I watch on this topic says to do the complete oppose thing?!? This one says to chit by putting in a warm sunny place... the last one I watched said literally the exact opposite... keep them in a cool dark place 😂..... ummm??
cool dark place is storage conditions... warm sunny is Chitting conditions... you want the sunlight to make the sprouts thick instead of long and white like they would be in the dark
@gardenlikeaviking .... moving from pantry to windowsill.... lol... I bought a good size organic russet about 10 days ago. ... it actually has some small sprouts going . I also got 2 small red potatoes... but they are not organic .... didn't have any... I picked these two specifically because I thought they had some growth.. but they haven't done anything yet... we will see if anything happens.. thanks.
Thanks
