It's really weird and I haven't given too much analytical thought to it yet but you're picking up on the same thing I am for sure. Live versions are more straightforward with how they establish the beat.
As a Radiohead super fan, I have to say this is one of the best live performances of any song by Thom (or Radiohead, The Smile, AFP, or any of them for that matter). Utter brilliance and I’m totally obsessed.

But Thom is so way above this, its beneath his dignity, he is in a league of his own, a pairing with that little Flea is just not pretty and Thom didn't need to lower himself to that.
