How I Drone (almost a tutorial) - Eurorack Modular

yes, I know I have said "Eurorack Modular" in the title but any sound source can be used to create a drone, and using the same principles that I talk about.
just wanted to get that out of the way
this is a linear recording and by that I mean I hit record and let the camera run for the full thirty or so minutes and there are no edits, and there are plenty of minor annoying errors throughout the video which I have corrected with text labels over the top of the conveniently placed JP-8000
I had done some research beforehand on how to create tutorial videos and it was daunting to the point of me not bothering with creating this thing, but I had promised some time ago that I would and, in the end, decided to go for this linear unedited approach in the hope that I got everything right
and this was the fourth take!!!
for drones 1, 2 and 3 I use basic "East Coast" subtractive synthesis methods, that is, waveforms with lots of harmonics (partials) and then a filter to "tame" the upper harmonics
for drone 4 I use "West Coast" synthesis methods which is using a simple sine wave which is passed through a wavefolder in order to add harmonics
The module I use is the DPW Design Mög WF-1 Wavefolder and there is a very good video by the designer of the module which you can find here,
• DPW Design Mög WF-1 W...
Dan explains the wave folding process perfectly
timestamps
00:00:00 - short drone example
00:01:52 - an introduction, of sorts... very brief rundown of the various drone parts
00:04:49 - drone 1, the bass drone (C2 = 65.40639 Hz) "East Coast" synthesis
00:07:12 - drone 2, perfect fifth (G2 = 97.99886 Hz) "East Coast" synthesis
00:09:30 - over to REAPER and SPAN to explain frequency build up and the use of EQ to "fix"
00:13:45 - drone 3 (F3 = 174.6141 Hz) "East Coast" synthesis
00:15:54 - drone 4 (C4 = 261.6256 Hz) "West Coast" synthesis
00:18:54 - looking at drone 4 waveform in oscilloscope
00:20:06 - talking about sends into the disting EX in Granulator mode and hearing effect
00:21:43 - Mutable Instruments Elements for more high frequency content
00:26:11 - going back over the basic principles plus other chatty stuff including how I "perform" the drone in real time
I would like to thank Luke, Dr.Syntheo, Don and Gav for watching the unlisted version of this video prior to making it public... I was concerned that the video was not good enough for public consumption and it was great to have it sense checked to make sure there were no major howlers

cheers, and I hope that peeps interested in creating drones find this video useful
oh, and I should also put a link to Luke's recent video on drones, where he explains his methods and principles

Kids remember this was all done in one take, not 125 like others do.
Thank you for inviting us into your cave, Andy. You gave us a clear look behind the scenes and also your presence was so warm I felt like sitting there and having a cup of tea together.
I learned a few things and liked your humorous captions.
thank you so much, Rich!
I am glad you were able to take something away from this video 🙂
Has about four-dozen things showing, quickly explains about six and says "That's about it!" Love it. 😆
Damn Andy, if I had that many toys to play with, nobody would see me for months! 🙂👍
yes, it is a very large distraction and I am often in trouble!
Almost reaching the end now and I have to say that it is very instructive and fascinating. Thanks for the sharing Andy.
thank you very much, Fred 🙂
That was fantastic Andy! Love the joy you share while doing so. It was very instructional as well, love your explanation and how you produce your drone.
Never stop Droning!
thank you very much, Axel!
Drone is Life!! 🙂
GOOD STUFF! Sounds Great! #reverbislife 👏👏
thank you very much, Dean 🙂
Great Andy! This is basically a tutorial! I see a lot of experience and wisdom in this video, and a lot of awareness!
thank you Maurizio! 🙂
Excellent Andy 🙂
thank you very much, KtM 🙂
Love seeing the breakdown, bud! Have seen you perform here, and always appreciate when you share as you perform, but this dedicated one, was great!
thank you very much, Javier, so glad you enjoyed 🙂
Excellent work Andy❤, thank you for the drone masterclass 😊
thank you very much, Sudhanva 🙂
Great video Andy!! Love seeing how you craft your very nice drones!! 🙂 Love the captions that argue with you 🤣 Great work!! 🙂
LOL thanks, Anna!
yeah, but the captions are always right!! 😉
Really helpful to hear how you approach making drones. Thank you!
thank you very much, Eric 🙂
Love it Andy 🙂
thank you very much, Gav 🙂
would love to see more of this type of content from you andy :)
thank you for watching, REEPZ 🙂
I'd love to, but it is quite difficult and I would much rather be making music!
cheers 👍
@@synkrotron totally understandable andy this type of stuff requires a lot of time :)
Lovely stuff!
thank you very much 🙂
Nice one, the eurorack in your hands is quite the magic maker 🔥
thank you very much for tuning in, Chris 🙂
Space Whales!!! Very cool, Andy!
thank you very much, Will! 🙂
Thumbs-up!
thank you very much, Don, and thanks for doing a QA check... very much appreciated 🙂👍
Thought you were bringing out a bagpipe with it all, lol. Great breakdown. It's funny how few yrs ago I did the same thing, looking for "Drone Theory", but ended finding La Monte Young and studying his approach (2, 3, 7 and leaving out fifths).
haha! I love bagpipes!!!
thanks for watching 🙂
yeah, so many ways to create drone stuff
I guess my love of heavy metal and distorted guitars has me reaching for the power chord root and fifth out of habit, and I really should think outside of the box for a change 🙂
cheers,
andy
Nice one, Andy!
thank you very much, Ben! 😊
Enjoyed, you made pro picture~🤟
thank you very much!
I am sorry if you watched this because it says "drone"
I can see that you create drone footage on your channel 🙂
Great sharing my brother have a nice day
thank you very much, and you have a great day too 🙂
Thank you fo sharing this helpful information.
thank you for watching, Mr Wabbit 🙂
Good one Andy. Most of what you said went straight over my head but interesting none the-less. Clever chap🤓
it's a doddle, Chris... we'll get you there haha!
Good time with a good friend ! Great insight, still an invitation to create. Drone, I haven't try yet.. Well done Dude !
thank you very much, Thomas 🙂
definitely have a go 👍
Thanks for sharing, this is awesome!
thank you very much, Shawn 🙂
I will watch this whilst I consume my evening food. In about 15 minutes
thank you very much, Wooks!
I hope you have a go at making something and sharing it when ready 🙂
@synkrotron Steak and Ale pie, chips & baked beans. Sorry, individual pie. However, Missi said it was excellent as dad always shares his dinner with me.
@@thewookiee9511 LOL! Excellent!
Wow - Learned a lot from this sir - excellent video mate
thank you very much, Simon 😊
That was a great demonstration, thanks Andy 👍
thank you very much, Rob 🙂
Nice work, Andy! 🙂
thank you very much, Robbie 😊
This is facinating Andy. Good to see a close up of how you do this. I'm coming in and out of this and will check out the second half soon. Warts and all is best. Far too much 'perfect' on the net.
thank you very much, Graham 🙂
Excellent video Andy, I'm really enjoying that angle! 👍
thank you very much, Tom 🙂
yeah, had a mess with a few different views with the DSLR and this one seemed to suit what I was doing here the most
but still no close ups, though I'm not sure if that would have helped peeps new to this stuff anyway
cheers 👍
Excellently dronalicious
hiya, Gwen 🙂
thank you very much, and thanks for watching 👍
Awesome!! Love it man!! Drone on!
thank you very much, Jon
I am planning on hitting the record button on this one... got some more drone stuff added and I'll do the usual guitar thing over the top... hopefully later today 🙂
cheers, and thank you for watching
Amazing! Very interesting, Andy ! 👍
thank you very much, and thanks for watching 🙂
Great one, mate! Enjoyed it very much! ✨
thank you very much, Erwin 🙂
Great tutorial Andy!
thank you very much, Steve 🙂
nice, man
thank you very much, Luca 🙂
Very useful information, Andy. Softube has clouds, which is a little like Elements I think. Would I be right in thinking your fixed pitch is achieved by tuning your oscillators rather than a specific fixed voltage value.
hi Wooks 👋
Clouds is quite different to Elements... Elements is a physical modelling module whereas Clouds is a granular effect
I have had a look at Softube modular and the nearest you can get is Rings, which is one half of Elements
I think the only way you can get Elements in software is with VCV Rack
and, yes, I usually tune an oscillator to the desired pitch but I do also sometimes use CV to select or change the pitch of a drone part... it very much depends on how want to perform the actual drone
Nice one Andy :)
thank you very much, James 🙂
So, is it true you need a pilot's license to use a drone? Asking for a friend.
😜
Keep 'em coming Andy! 😁
you do need a license for some drones, but not this one haha!
thanks for watching, Craig 🙂
NICE!😎... Try adding a Blukač into mix -Then U'll be able 2 'Leave Orbit'!🦋✨👽
thanks haha
I will put the Blukač on to my ever expanding wishlist 😀
Nice explanation Andy 👌
I need to have another go with the Hydrasynth to see if I can improve on my last upload.
thank you very much, James 🙂
yeah, sure, if drone interests you, keep at it, and, as I said I said in the video, we don't have to use modular for this kind of thing
It's that constantly evolving soundscape that interests me, then playing something over the top.
@@prometheusuk9845 yes, and LFO is key here, James
I am not familiar with the Hydra but I believe that it has a good modulation matrix
The Hydra has 5 LFOs and 5 Envelopes, so plenty of options for modulation.
The Mod Matrix is huge, I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think it has 64 slots.
I've heard it said that it's like a modular in a box.
@@prometheusuk9845 get to it then, James!
give me a shout when ready 😉
lol…and you were worried. :P
hmmmmyeah... I should be suitably embarrassed!!
thank you for everything, Luke 🙂
💙
I use to have the blue oberheim ob12 you have in the background, it was slated when it came out but man I created some phat sounding pads…wish I never got rid of it.
yes, it's a lovely virtual analogue synth 🙂
@@synkrotron I know right…is there any synths you’ve had to part with that you regret selling? Btw I just discovered your channel and listening to your jams you have uploaded, your well good, great ambience.
@@musicman2047 oh, yes, back in the early 80's I made the mistake of buying some Roland stuff which was a bad move because I couldn't really afford it and ended up having to sell it all to pay the bills
thank you very much for watching more of my stuff, I really appreciate it 🙂
"I'm very old you know" 😂
I know, I shouldn't keep making excuses!! 🤣
thanks for watching, fellow droner 🙂
Maybe I can make a similar video
@@JeffHopkinsMusic definitely, because every drone, every technique and process is unique to the individual
and even this one on mine only covers a basic drone... I could probably do another six videos on this topic 🙂
@@synkrotron yep it can get as deep as you want (as long as you have more cables) 😆
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤩🤩
❤
Thank you, very interesting. I’m surprised you don’t run into trouble with the g beating against the f. Somehow it all fits together.
thank you, Neil 🙂
yeah, I know what you mean... maybe because the F was above the G, not just below it?
I'll be honest, I just try stuff... I'm not that great at music theory and I pretty much rely on "happy accidents" 🙂
cheers,
andy
@@synkrotron Oh right. G2, then F3. That makes sense.
@@NeilBaylis yeah... I didn't help because I kept calling out things wrong 😕
weeeee he drones....how does he?
LOL, Davi! you can drone too!!
thanks for tuning in 🙂
👍i LoVe !
💙⚪❤
thank you very much, Eddie 🙂
@@synkrotron You're Welcome Andy... Friendly 🙏
Not clever? and you know how to use all that gear. That's clever to me. Second half's as interesting as the first. 👏👏👏
thank you very much for watching the full thing, Graham, much appreciated 🙂
well, in some ways I suppose I have the necessary skills 😀
