      The first tractor I got to drive was an old Farmall B. when I was maybe 11 or 12 years old, in 1967. Next year I graduated to the 4020 diesel. I loved them both, but I quickly became partial to the 4020, even though I taught myself to drive a standard on the old Farmall! This was on my Aunt and Uncle's large dairy farm in Northeastern Iowa.

    The 4020 is one of the most iconic tractors ever. My uncle had a 3020 with an AM radio bolted to the fender, the hot setup back in the day for a teenage boy like me! 😁 🚜

    I love it that you show when things don't go according to plan -- because that's exactly how farming goes. Hookup connections aren't the same size, need an adapter - yep, that's typical. That shows what really happens for farmers merging newer and older equipment. Thanks!

    Laura, About a decade ago I retired from a company that sells all kinds of shop supplies for farm and industry. Go on line to see their catalog, which includes the famous Williams hand tools. They will supply cabinets for your fastener needs. They very likely have a representative in your area. The company is Lawson Products and is an American company. You can also start an account and order on line. A great company! Oh, I live in Tennessee and am an old [83 yrs. farm boy! lol! Have a great year!

    The guy that doesn't want to see the Hay Day endorsement has a right to his opinion, regardless of how others think. If he was reaching to leave over a 90 second blurb for a game, then he was looking for a reason to spout off and to leave.
    You keep doing what you've been doing and you will be alright.
    I like the fenders for the 4020. Girl, you can take some high steps! Wow!
    I am still amazed at your eagerness to lift and move things bigger than you.
    Keep your noses in the breeze, and keep doing what you all have been doing. It's pretty evident that you're doing things right; the farm is thriving and growing, you all are key memners of the community. Much respect for you, Grant and Gage.

Then bought a 4430 (felt like I was in heaven) lol / now finishing touch on rockin your driveway cover it up with some 3/4- BN rock from Martin Marietta / Guernsey WY / the fines will stop the big rock moving around almost like concrete when packed down plus it’s a pretty reddish color/ it can be hauled in a grain hopper so truckin freight cost can be reasonable to deliver to you!!! 👍✌️❤️❤️❤️ ps 3/4 minus BN rock has 3/4” rock plus smaller fines rock ❤️

    Keep up the good work you two! As a long time mechanic, I see some smoke coming from the exhaust stack which means it is running rich on fuel. It also sounds like it isn't running on all cylinders. This could be from a fouled spark plug from running too rich.

    The 4020 is cool. But put a ROPS bar on it for safety and a canopy on that to protect you from the sun. And the 2 step attachment for boarding the tractor. I would like to agree about the umbrella holder, but you really need to have the ROPS.

    I always struggled with hooking the pto up and then I started some pre hook up procedures and one was before I even backed up to an implement I would make sure the pto would slide up and down the shaft and then I would clean the actual pto hook up and grease it and that solved most of my hook up problems

  • @FirstLast-wd2rl
    @FirstLast-wd2rl 8 месяцев назад +1

    Neat old 4020. Nice thing about that model is that there's still oodles of parts available. If this is your first older machine, that 4020 probably has the old style JD hydraulic couplers. When they start to leak (and they will) you can change out the cartridge so they take the new ISO fittings, so no adapters needed. In addition to the fenders, a great safety addition is the 2 point ROPS bar, and then put the 2 post canopy on top. Great summer machine, safe, and you work in the shade. If you're needing a winter project, and finances allow, the 4020 can be converted to a newer style 404 or 466 diesel engine from one of the -40 or -50 series machines with minimal fuss. Maybe out of a 4040, 4240, or later 4050. Don't even need the turbo version, just need the diesel efficiency. Toss that battery over to the right side of the machine so you can use the step. :)

    Yep, Parker ag quick connects don't fit those old JD quick couplers. A couple of adapters and you'll be all set. As far as the brush hog tie the shaft to the tractor and get to start moving, then exercise it and get some powdered graphite to lube it with, grease will collect and hold the dust and grit.

    This farmer I know maintains his gravel equipment yard on his farm with a spring tooth that he drags around behind his pickup... What it does is it keeps the gravel exposed and up on top so that a tire can't go through and splash debris out of the mud puddle and... Understand... the tire can't make contact with any water if the gravel is up on top.... So you just drag that spring tooth around once a month... You will never have any mud puddles... And your equipment yard will stay nice and flat.... And will have a wonderful maintained look to it.

    13:48 One of my cats, Miss Stripes, this BEAUTIFUL tortoiseshell and white striped cat, is following me everywhere. She sits on the arms of my chair in the office when I'm here. She gets up close and wants me to hold her when I'm doing prayers. She wants to sleep with me in bed at night; she buries herself under the covers. Last night, when she realised I was going to bed, she came running! When I go out to work on my farm, she acts like she wants to go out with me, but, she's a house cat. She lived outside for a while before I finally managed to get her. She was abandoned and somehow, she managed to walk about half a mile to my farm. She also loves to watch me when I play my farm sim.

    Please get the correct u bolts to mount the fenders correctly to the slots in the final drives. The u bolts will keep them from moving or twisting. You do not want them to move out into the tire when you are moving! Also get some John Deere Multi-Purpose spray lube TY6350. It is a penetrant and has lube in ii. Works a lot better than WD40. Do not use WD40 on lug nuts or lug bolts mounting wheels because it will dry out and be harder to loosen next time. Same goes for all bolts and nuts. Use this TY6350 and it leaves an oil that will stay there for easier removal. WD40 is a water displacement (WD) not a lubricant. Good luck on your 4020!

    I worked in a garage for my brother-in-law when I was a teenager and I found out that the Snap-On truck is when you know that you have outgrown the candy store. It would be fun to see you do a video of visiting a Snap-On truck but, since your primary goal is to fix things to use to farm and not fix things for a living, you can get tools to do the job and not spend as much money. Another thing is, when you use an impact to tighten nuts, you do not need to hold the bolt for the most part.

    It sounds like the 4020 has a valve issues. You can see by the the rain cap on the muffler is bouncing up and down it should be held up when idling and you should run regular unleaded gas with a lead additive, gasohaul should not be used . Be safe ❤️🌹🙏✌️👋

    That round gravel your showing will never pack firm. Crushed stone is angular and interlocks when compacted.just a suggestion.

    Grind the fender mount lower plates smooth and spray them green to look lots better. Yes you need different batteries and batt boxes meant for John Deere.

    I love that old 4020. I have a 1/16 Ertl diecast of a 4020 that looks just like yours only smaller.

    For sure back in the day the 4020 was the tractor to have. Everybody and their grandma had one. First tractor I learned how to drive.

    My uncle has two 4020 diesels. One is a manual shift, and one shift on the fly. They're real workhorses.

    Looks like the only thing missing on the 4020 is a roll bar. Be safe and keep having fun.

    Please fab up a roll bar for the 4020.. obviously; with a yellow umbrella attached .. seriously tho.. i doubt you will find any statistics on-line as to how many lost their lives to that era of tractor. Not just JD.. They all came without safety in mind. Take it from a very old hand. The numbers are substantial. Anyway.. got my Pepper fix.. much love and Thanks so much for sharing

    I don't know if you know this or not, but the pto on that tractor is interchangabl from 540 to 1000 rpm.
    That electrical system is 24 volt. Needs a 24-volt battery unless it was changed to 12 volts.

    • @LeoBlaser
      @LeoBlaser 8 месяцев назад +1

      The 24 volt systems used 2- 12 volt batteries

      @user-ui5zj2ss1t correct, are 4010 was 24-volt, and we changed it for it would kick the starter in gear burning it out. Made it expensive, changing when it did. 12 resolved the issue.

      24 volt was on diesels only not gas tractors

    I am enjoying watching the work on the 4020. I bought that t-shirt last fall; and I wear it here in northeast Missouri.
