      One of the best, definitly, but there are others. Just gonna say Ron Swanson from parks and recreation, Hawkeye Pierce from M*A*S*H (or pretty much any character from that series) and Captain Raymond Holt from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

      Yeah, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to break it to ya, Shelia, but rants only go up to the end of Season 3? Why? Oh, well it may have something do with that maybe the guy in charge of the channel only had the first 3 seasons or maybe it has something to do with the copyright that Disney owns on this show even though it's been off the air for years and really isn't making much of a profit anymore.

    Before I was a doctor, I thought Cox was funny. When I became a doctor, I thought Cox was scary. Now that I've got residents following me around, I make it a point NOT to be like Cox. It goes to show that people develop different perspectives as they age...

    • @6TomCruz6
      @6TomCruz6 6 лет назад +4

      Circe wouldn't a doctor like that get fired or get in trouble allot at least I'm just curious?

    • @soonny002
      @soonny002 6 лет назад +45

      +Tom,
      I'm glad you asked that question. I didn't want to come across as anti-scrubs because it made me laugh, but sadly, doctors like Cox do exist. And here's why:
      Cox can only exist in a system that promotes such behaviour.
      I admit, it angers and frustrates me sometimes when my patients don't follow medical advice then end up back in hospital despite my best efforts. Residents make me angry too sometimes when they are negligent. But it is unprofessional to lose my temper like Cox and frankly speaking, a very ineffective way to instil any change. So as the lead clinician, I must remain professional and figure out how to solve a problem but leave my anger to my therapist.
      What Cox is doing is not acceptable in today's standards but there was a time (as my mentor once said) when it was not only the norm, it was encouraged. Doctors are encouraged to rage at their residents, encouraged to be harsh with their patients, encouraged to be emotionally disconnected, just so they could 'do a good job'. This went in line with the traditional masculine thinking that 'doctors need to be tough', especially on themselves. Until... suicide rates soared amongst doctors.
      The one major thing that happened over the decades was the feminisation of medicine. Men just weren't interested in such a low paying job with huge student debts which opened the field to women. We conducted a brief survey on a class of medical students here where I worked in 2015, and it showed that 60% of all medical students are now female.
      What was once a traditionally male occupation is now gradually being dominated by women, and that led to different ways of thought and different culture of care.
      Doctors are now encouraged to be more understanding, forgiving, and above all, more expressive and communicative. Patients need to be treated with respect and dignity, so do residents. It doesn't mean we shouldn't be firm with our patients, but we need to be respectful about it too. We also work in teams now to keep each other in check and also to support each other. Gone are the days of lone-wolf doctors, now we work in multidisciplinary teams and team members have to learn to get along with each other. All of this have contributed to a more compassionate and effective way of practising medicine.
      Having said that, there are still more 'masculine' and 'feminine' medical specialities. Orthopaedic surgery, for example, have been touted as the more masculine medical speciality where doctors like Cox might still exist. Although I've met some very nice surgeons in my travel too. :) Whereas psychiatry is probably the more 'feminine' medical specialist where doctors are more interested in one's feelings and emotions.
      So to answer your question: "Will Cox get in trouble?" That depends on the system in which he works in. If the director of medicine (i.e. Kelso) is also a douchebag, and there are no protocols to deal with douchebags, and Cox functions as a one-man team with little to no external supervision, then his douchebaggery is most likely fostered and encouraged throughout the department. I'm more surprised as to how or why JD survives in such a system. In reality, I suspect JD would've become more like Cox since he was JD's mentor and JD's personality was to please Cox.
      I have to remind myself that it just a show after all...

      +Tom,
      By the way, in rant 134, when Cox wants Eliot to do that lumbar puncture because the on-call resident won't do it? Yeah, that's not true. If a lumbar puncture was urgent, the on-call resident will have to do it no matter what. That's why they're "ON CALL". But if the lumbar puncture was not urgent, then Eliot could've done it, TOMORROW when she gets back from her date.
      And in rant 135, when Cox said 'the hospital always comes first', again, that's lacking in context and typical of an old-school masochistic perfectionistic doctor. Doctors have fixed hours and although they spend a lot of time at the hospital, their hours are predictable as long as they make a conscious decision to put down their pager and go home. I always preach to my residents to GO HOME, the hospital will live without them. Eliot can still have a life outside the hospital as long as she plans it well. Otherwise, no doctors are ever going to be able to get married, raise kids, or have any vacation whatsoever.

    • @Missmethinksalot1
      @Missmethinksalot1 6 лет назад +2

      Circe, unless it's time to clock out, it is Elliot's responsibility to do the lumbar puncture. If for some reason the procedure has seen delayed and Elliot was just hanging around to get ready although her work hours have ended, then it would make sense for the on call resident to take over. Although to be fair if a lumbar puncture is being considered it'd be usually urgent or semi urgent. Not as casual as doing a blood sampling.

    Seriously, it takes ALOT of talent to be the Cox character, just being that "vocal machine gun" taking down any target anywhere. A Cox rant would take up about 5000 cue cards in 5 minutes. There are times I could launch a verbal assault on certain people I had to put up with and destroy with outspokivness.
