FDNY Tiller Ladder 20 (+ Ghostbusters Ladder 8 responding modified)

- The Ghostbusters fire house normally hosting ladder 8 is currently closed for renovation so that the truck has moved temporarily to the quarters of ladder 20 and division 1. Both trucks were dispatched to a call in L20's first due with ladder 8 responding modified (=no lights no sirens). Ladder 8 was parked outside the building because they were making a drill when the call came in. It is rare to have 2 ladder trucks responding out of one fire house in NYC.

Holy! Ladder 20 came out like a jack-in-the-box! All that truck from that tiny space. As some who has driven trucks with and without trailers for decades, what FDNY does in those cramped quarters still amazes me!
Fdny your service is deeply appreciated thanks to everyone who responds keep them safe out there great looking tiller truck and fire station like the style way to go appreciate you guys thanks ! Joe
That ladder 20 is a beauty
FDNY does an amazing job with old equipment crammed into tight quarters and nobody will stop to let them go to work.

Amazing how the rear steersman works.Like a tail gunner.
You bits are so fucking gay..."steersman???" It's a tillerman.
@@justinthyme8931 I am a Brit, fucking spell it right moron, and even I think steersman is fucking dumb!
Always in awe of the Tillerman.
@@justinthyme8931 Bro, no need to be a dick. Correct him nicely or let it go.
Gotta respect the steersman’s steering skills. Oh wait, steersperson, don’t want to look dumb and get yelled at.
FDNY is a very impressive ladder truck and certainly is needed in a city where there are many narrow alleys to get into. Although for myself and my fire department I really liked our ladder truck which was a straight ladder truck. When operated properly with the jacks correctly sst, could not be turned over and we also flowed 2000 GPM. But unlike a tiller, we couldn't negotiate allets. Again I very much enjoyed seeing FDNY Ladder 20. Thank you again for the video.
I lived across the road from seagrave. I remember watching this tiller ladder pull out of the shop the first time.
Tight streets and small station and big rigs .. nyc .. truly skill
Brings back memories of my Father who was a Tiller driver and later Captain of Ladder 3 Station 7of South Bend Indiana Fire Department for 25 years
Does South bend still have a tiller?
@@bdills89 no they took their only one out of service back in 1983 now they all are Quint trucks
@@davidmichalski4241 I was gonna say I would love to see one in person and that's only an hour drive
@@bdills89 I wish that I could see the one my father was on again I've been trying to find out about it from the South Bend Fire Department but no luck with that because nobody would know
@@davidmichalski4241 yea that's normally how it is if there's not am old timer in the administration nobody cares about the history
I LOVE THE TILLER...my great uncle Herbert Smith drove a tiller in the mid 30’s, early 1940’s ...i am guessing... as he use to bring my father who was born in 1927 to the fire house let him sit in the fire truck and slide down the pole... Great Uncle Herby ’s sons, grandsons & great grandsons became FDNY & NYPD...LOVE YOU GUYS...FDNY stay safe...
Superbe vidéo comme d'habitude et vivement la suite
Love the Duck Tape 8
David Dobry Yeah, my thoughts exactly, lol. Yet another use for duct tape.
I've seen local departments do that when a main apparatus is out of service for repairs
Spare rig

He knows what he did.
Big shout out with much love and respect to my brothers at FDNY the best in the nation!!! Can't even imagine trying to drive a fire rig in NY traffic no one gives a shit and gets out of the way in their own sweet time!!!
Same here, I give FDNY Chauffer's the utmost respect & respect, even if they are hose draggers. FDNY are still A#1 BEST!

New york really does have the coolest fire engines by a long shot
Wow! Perfect Video! :-)

Sorry, hab mal ne Frage, warum genau fährt Ladder8 ohne Signal an, verstehe gerade nur Bahnhof!?
thank you fdny.
Nice!
This video is from 2015...in june when i was in NYC the house was still closed for repairs, I looked inside and it was not close to being finished

A whole lot of GhostBusters liked this video.
Ah.. beat me to it.😆
But did they call them ??????? 🤔
I work there 8 years. Great house 20
Thank you!!
Cant believe they still have the fire truck with the back driver.. So cool.
Most if not all tillers have the rear driver. Or are you just inferring to them still using Tiller 20?
Hitman Ghost 510 as long as they’re tight streets, tillers a needed
So many vehicles are just passing by instead of stopping when 8 truck is trying to go... wtf
Welcome to NYC
My word, lives could be at stake and those selfish drivers put their convenience over those lives.
Jake it's New York. What do you expect?
But his emergency lights are off, so people for people assume it's not going for emergency.
Jake well sadly some people are very egoistic and some don’t care about them people also intimidate our emergency services in my country so yeah some people don’t care about this (I have a lot of respect for this guys because I am one of them)
Good job
Ladder 8 house still being worked on?
I see a few things wrong with this. #1, people aren't yielding to them. #2, there is a bike lane, but the bikes are everywhere else on the road.
Since when do bikers use the bike lane? They never do.
Cool
Unusual - L20 one way and L8 the other from the same house! Nice video.
Will be nice to see L8 back in their old house when it's done.
CobraEmergencyVideos - North America I’m guessing maybe there was construction or something 20 couldn’t make the turn around
GaudetteProductions1 Seems likely - L20 is huge

It's a one way street. Instead of going around, its quicker to go the wrong way which opens to their direction of travel.
Ah yes we love tiller ladders
Thats a interesting detail,is that the man in the back is stering the backwheels
Was Ladder 8 a spare at that point or did they just have to replace that door and put the "8" on there in tape?
What Type of call requests a modified response?
Love to drive
I ❤️ Tillers
Same here
ladder 8 is an older seagrave
spare rig for 8?
The firestation of the Ladder Co. 8 isnt at 14 N Moore Street at Manhattan ?
Nathaniel Silverwolf yes 8 is but there this isnt tgere station not sre what they were doing
1:38 that guy just staring on his bike
👍👍👍👍👍
Like seeing Kramer pulling up the rear!
how long is this huge rig
Tiller ladder trucks are about 50 feet long but they can be longer or shorter depending on the requirements of the fire department ordering the unit.
Oh I'd love to drive a tiller as rear steersman shame I'm from the uk
¡Como mola la unidad del minuto 2:24!
I’m also not sure any of those drives know how far back 200 feet actually is. I know that they probably use that exclusively for reversing, but if a big rig in Australia had that written on the back and you ran up the back of them you would get a fine for tailgating, and for reckless driving.
Love truck😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😫✌😍😍😍😍mui lindos
I'd love to learn how to drive a tiller
I didnt know FDNY had tiller units, learn something new everyday
They in fact have about 13 out of 134 ladder companies.
Wdym bro it’s literally the city
The audacity of some people to honk a horn at a firefighter trying to get on his ladder wtf
🤩😍😃😎
Doesn’t it piss you off when cars don’t let fire trucks or any emergency vehicle get in, or around. Please don’t be one of those idiots. One day you could be the one needing their help!
If you look, a firefighter told them to move. It's so that the truck can go the wrong way down the road.
People need to stop walking in front of the fire station when fire fighters are preparing to respond to an emergency
2x keine USA Flagge an den Fahrzeugen?
I've been to NY and seen these guys out on shouts trying to get where they're needed but why do people insist on not getting out thr way?
Oh you're in an emergancy, thats cool I'll just slowly walk infront of you or push past in my car!!
3:23 that old FDNY unit
ELI5 why are there drivers in the front and back of engine 20???
waffleking3211 the guy at the back steers the tiller (trailer) to make sharper turns
To add to what Rhys said, the tiller's sharper turns allow a longer truck (vs. a shorter engine) to negotiate NYC's narrower streets.
Lincoln's ghost was spotted so that's where they going
We're do they do there training
The FDNY have a huge training center on Randall's Island., an island between Manhattan, Bronx. and Queens.on the East River. Most of the main training is done there
I've been thinking is ladder 8 and 20 a Seagraves
Yes
well i got to say, it takes a long time fore them to get started?
Notice how they had to move a rig to let the tiller out, then stop traffic, and wait for traffic that ignored them to move past? You're welcome.
Now add a European siren to it and it ruins the whole video.
Yes, I absolutely agree with you
There is no such thing as a european siren - all european countries have different sirens
Stephen InGermany more like hi-lo
@@stepheningermany true, in my country we have sirens like usa, some kind of thst siren not exactly and don't get me wrong but our response time is more faster than usa response time, here we have 3 minutes to suit up and to go at engines...
That had to suck drive that ladder through Manhattan?!
Best apparatus drivers in the world,
Those ladders can turn better then you think. They can steer from the back, that’s why they have a tiller man in the rear
@@alek488 duh..uh.. yeah!!

Wow New Yorkers don't give a rip about emergency vehicles their supposed to stop!
Is this the biggest fire station in New York city?
Not nowhere near biggest
@@maxhallman1036 which one is the biggest in NYC? I know some busy ones, but not which one is the biggest, with the most apparatus housed
@@EnjoyFirefighting E-167 house E-169 house E-265 house E-76 house and E-22 house for normal response stations and hands down SOC for overall largest housing
@@maxhallman1036 thank you for the quick response. E-265 house had a nice size and looks cool!
Response tactics and station size & placement are very different from here in central Europe. Here you find many stations in the size range of 40+ bays, some even have 60 bays. In most cities it's mixed use for ordinary and special operations while only few cities run seperate special operations stations.
I live in a small village of 10k inhabitants but the volunteer FD still has a station with 9 units housed there. Used to live in a city where the 47 bay counting fire station got too small (imagine that!)
Square footage yes… this is one of the biggest. Used to be the FDNY medical office. This building you are seeming houses the following. L-20, D-1, re-breather 1, RAC bat, Rescue 1 reserve rig, CSU, Fire Marshall’s special investigations. Unit. The Captain of L-20 is in charge of the building as a whole. The rest of the units are Tenants. That is as the tradition goes.

@@baljit6996 an articulated ladder truck that has a steerable rear axle

Lol first. Safety first they could have opened the door and showed the stop sign. But I don't think they would have stopped for the Engine. Problem is who every stops at stop sign anymore and to add what those hash long lines on the highway white or yellow.🤣

[rescue911.de] - worldwide emergency responses
Out of all the fire department vids I've seen, American firefighters never seem to be in a rush ?
You are clueless. They had to move a rig so this one had clearance and to block traffic. Another guy had to stand in the road to block traffic. Then the engineer had to wait for drivers and bikers who ignored the signals to stop to move past. Then he had to visually confirm there were no more oncoming drivers and bikers. It's because of oblivious people like you that it takes American fire departments longer to get going. Just stop commenting.
@@csn6234 to be fair that was painfully slow, why do they take the first truck out? Then once out why doesn't the other one come straight out? Whats with the pulling out, reversing up, parking and then waiting for the next one? I'm sure theres reasons, do you know what they are?
