FUCKING FIIINNALLLYYYY Someone has finally said EXACTLY, damn near word for word, of what I say anytime I hear someone say that turn based games are over or too old. It honestly feel reallly good to hear some else say this for a change lol. Thank you for making this man! It's all good if you dont like turn-based games, but don't be out here saying they need to die or go away. That is honestly terrible for gaming and takes away expression and new experiences.
This is why I never understood why ppl think you don’t have as much control in turn based games vs full action ones. I get the instant dopamine hit but I’ve always found the hybrids and actual turn based games most satisfying.
Another series I think does the hybrid of the two super well is the tales of series. It kinda takes mass effects approach to next level. It’s active combat but you can stop it at any time to set individual teammates positions, choose whether they attack or not, choose what kinda action they focus on, and even how far away they are in the fight through a grid system at any time in combat. So you could change strategy on the fly a lot. It’s a shame b/c I noticed a lot of ppl entirely miss those mechanics b/c they’ll approach the newer tales of games mostly as action games. Back in day it was probably my favorite middle ground of turn based and action games.
because is slow and boring, nobody likes to wait specially in video games is like play chess in a video game, if I want to play chess I will play chess in real life
@@elderleon1844lol, you clearly haven't played many turn based games. Sure, some are slow. But no, not all of them.
You know I never thought about it that way but the final fantasy 12 and Dragon Age AI command system is basically a bunch of if then statements. Been replaying Dragon Age recently and sometimes the lack of direct control without constant pausing to micro manage is annoying. Sometimes real-time with pause just feels like turn based with extra steps, if I have to pause the game every couple of seconds to micro manage my team, I might as well be playing turned based. Anyone who had to play the Corypheus fight in DA2, knows exactly what I mean.
Yuppppp once u start noticing this in more action RPGs, it's makes u think. Shit! I forgot about Vats in Fallout lol
I’ve been playing a bit of Chrono Cross and Persona 5, and I don’t think the issue with turn based is the combat itself, but rather how you engage with it.
Very true I think sometimes people with issues with it don't really try to learn how to use the system to its fullest or lack to imagination to experiment.
Remember when horror games were dead?
Remember when people said boss battles were over?
Remember when we were told single player games were a thing of the past?
the first ones mostly true and who ever said the second one
Turn based combat will always give you way more options than real time.
This really helps put into words how I’ve been feeling about turn based games again recently, I’m surprised fighting games weren’t mentioned
I highly appreciate this video cuz turn based jrpgs are my favorite and what got me more involved in gaming
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 had something similar to Mass Effect where you could pause the gameplay and plan out the next 3 moves of both your character and the other 2 members of your party, which I really liked.
Now that you mention it, Twitter is basically turn-based combat 😂. Great video as always!
Makes sense since Kotor lead directly to ME. Same devs
As a Dragon Quest fan, turn base is still fun. Turn base is the most complex, most in-depth interactive system by far. But overall turn base represents creative freedom.
"Most complex in depth by far "
Thats wrong in every level lmao even by rpg standards
Turn base rpg at least mainstream ones are very casual friendly and dont require much thinking and thought idk wtf you are on dude
It's been an interesting journey getting into turn based games for me. Seeing that alot of people were introduced to the concept from pokemon, me being an outsider it's been rough getting into this style. It can be jarring looking through menus on menus of text to plan out attacks or find the right item to heal a team mate that's getting their ass whooped but it's something to keep an open mind to.
Marvel Midnight suns was dope and I hope the recent success of other turn based franchises motivates them to do a sequel
Damn no one ever talks about the Shin Megami Tensei games. Their turn-based Press Turn system is godly.
Great video. Turn based games are definitely making a resurgence and evolving thanks to BG3.
Dope video 🔥🔥🔥right now. My favorite game is honkai Star Rails
Nice I started playing it recently. Seems kind of cool even tho it's not something I usually play.
Isn't dead? Aren't we in a middle of a gigantic turn-based revival since XCOM remake all the way back on 2010's?
If anything I wish we had more real time games because turn-based is often the default way of doing games for indie devs, there's just thousands of them.
Yooo just started playing midnight suns last week, I’m hooked. Should’ve picked it up on release
I fuck with turn-based, I wish the FFVII Remakes were turned based instead of whatever hell combat they have.
it’s literally the best balance of implementing turn based combat into action. cry about it
I agree, it would have been so awesome with a true turn based style.
My whole life turn based is the best 🥰
@@deathofnagoya Lmfao, you're a weirdo.

Imagine all these new Final Fantasy games with Expedition 33 combat system looks cool and modern
I have played real time games all my life and now days i have some month playing turn based games and i can say i should try it before, i am enjoying and surprised.
I just don't understand why some real time game players used to make some coments about turn based. They are wrong .
As i see now, turn based games is one of the 2 bigs category games can be, it is just diff, and so peopple like it as some peopple like the other category.
Baldurs gate has perfect turn based. I hope more games do like that.
Also Final fantasy 7 remake is a mix of turn based and action. Because you can, as in mass effect, pause the game and issue commands, then go back to real time. I often do that with threaten/stagger combos. It is pretty cool.
Great video. Turn Base Combat will never die.
So I disagree that real time combat will reach it's logical end sooner than turn based combat because honestly, they are not different as you think. Even in a fighting there is a turn and understanding the frame data enough to understand your turn well enough reaches a point of reward for game knowledge. On top of that you have the learn a moveset and execute on reaction to things that provides rewards in a different way than a strategy game.
Additionally, strategy games that provide an abundance of choices and can create decision fatigue in much the same way as if you overload your mental stack in a fighting game by thinking about too many options at once. Personally, I prefer fighting games over your the traditional turn based game because it has almost everything I love about video games in one. Turn based combat, resource management , setups, proactive/reaction play, knowledge checks and conditioning (instead of putting a graphical debuff you make them scared to use certain buttons by your play).
This is not to say I think turn-based games are bad, what you are saying is valid but I don't feel like I'm learning a new skill as person so much as using pre-determined skills (with set rng values) and looking at an environment. Gaining power through leveling and unlocking traits and skills is overall less fun for me than learning a skill by practicing it and honing it through repetition. In action games the viability of that skill is not a product of rng but instead your honing ability and traditional turn based games don't really provide that experience.
Fantastic discussion!
Great vid!!
Love this! Where the hell is my Xcom 3!
Is that Derek Pope playing in the back
Keep up the momentum. Any chance you'll start uploading your twitch vlogs?
I'm working on an archive channel to upload my twitch stuff to for everyone.
Just for the title, you've got my like & subscribe. I've played turn-based RPGs all my life. Speaking of gaslighting, now Square-Enix and the modern FF community tells me that in fact, FF7 should always have been an action game, and I'm stupid for ever loving the original. I've had some serious arguments online with people who seriously think that the remake of FF7 is the one and only real way to play FF7, and now that "the real cool version of the game" exists, only nostalgic boomers and millennials (yes, I was called both a boomer and a millennial in these "discussions") would love the original. The only problem is, people like that also get to vote in elections.
Okay, watched your video, loved it. Just a small note about FF7 remake, about the change not being bad. It is bad. It is an insult to me as a fan of the original AND of turn based RPGs. Great video 🙂
You are our of your mind
Every time I hear "Turn-Based is outdated", or "Turn-Based only existed because of technical limitations". I facepalm hard.
Action games existed BEFORE Turn-Based games.
We know that right? And that is why I went back to action rpgs after all those years playing turn based games. Action games have grown on me way more before I played Final Fantasy VII, my first turn based rpg and it was confusing for the first hours. But after dozens of turn based rpgs I recognize my hunger for action games is bigger. Turn based rpgs can have excellent stories, beautiful graphics and awe inspiring soundtracks. But it doesn't do the magic on me no more. And that's really it. Preference. Maybe in ten years I change my mind again.
What game is that at 6:07?
The thing I can’t stand is “chain” or “stagger” mechanics in RPGs and ever since X-2 it’s become the norm.
the only turn based games i like are card games like yugioh, but typical turn based combat in games don't do it for me. I think the trick is to stop limiting the player so much to what they can do per turn. Yugioh's turns are great because you're executing massive combos and your opponent can also interrupt you during the combos. There's no AP system in yugioh. Each card leads into the next; there's an element of setting up something that lasts beyond your turn. also I think real time with pause is better than turn based.
Great video 👍🏾💯.
6:07 What is this game
I'm always going to prefer turn based especially because I'm autistic and thus my reaction times are slowed down just enough to make it difficult for me to handle the pace and challenge at all of ARPGS which are basically just too hard for me, you can call it a skill issue if you want but I'd just clap back hey look It's not my fault, I didn't ask to be born neurodivergent and please don't tell me about the other autistic you know that handles ARPGS just fine the truth is people with this condition have the symptoms present differently and my individual expression of Autism has somewhat slowed reflexes, a Few milliseconds slower is all it takes to make a day and night difference in things in the world of video games. if I try to play an FPS I lose 100% if I try toPVP I lose EVERY SINGLE TIME without fail. the ONLY way I can really meaningfully participate is if it is turn based.
bro cant play mario and luigi
Lovely video, but Im sad you didnt mention fighting games in this video, they make mechanical skill a part of the decision making process
What’s the name of the first game??
Honkai star rail
turn based combat is solid but i wouldnt really call it better action games and rpgs are 2 very different beasts that probably shouldnt be compared and adding stuff from one into the other usually makes it worst action games dont really need infinite choices and options
Turn based combat is far too easy. RTS is the way to engage in strategy, it's the closest we have compared to real life warfare and sports which are the pinnacle of strategy. Turn based is fine when you want to chill in front of your game, not when you want to be challenged by the game.
Kinda a weird general statement saying that turn based combat is easy. Obviously some games are easier than others but if you’ve played something like Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne then you would revoke that statement pretty fast
Nope, I'll maintain it. Some roguelikes have interesting difficulties, but there're designed to be die&retry games. Otherwise, TB games are easy, far easier than their real-time strategical games counterpart.
As for SMT3, I've played it about 15 years ago, and it's part of those easy TB games where pretty much everything is obvious, simply because it's easy to find where you need to focus.
Dude pick the name.
I really want to get into so many game but this fighting style is stoping me, how do you even love it, this is a real question cuz i want to love it too
When you play a game like SMT you will understand
I love it when fans of turn based rpgs come along with the chess comparison/argument. It shows that those people have run out of arguments before they started trying. Chess is something else. Something cultural. something that has gone through many transformations before it hit its actual form. And it took centuries to establish certain rules and moves. Our rpgs (video games) got nothing on that. Not a thing. I pumped hundreds of hours into turn based rpgs. But after so many years I have grown tired of them. Games like Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls offered me more. I still had to plan my route or enemies would have me for lunch. But I was in control. I am not a sitting duck. I can possibly escape if I went the wrong way. Turn based rpgs offer no such freedom.
If you like Elder Scrolls's shitty nerf bat combat more than a solid turn based battle system, I'm gonna chalk that up to PEBKAC instead of turn based combat being bad
No.
turn based fans are nostalgia blind
sorry but everyone has tastes and opinions toward things, I don't like turn based combat because is slow, annoying and boring and that's all
Dislike for mentioning elons name
