- "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" is a poem by Randall Jarrell, about the death of a gunner in a Sperry ball turret on a World War II American bomber aircraft.
From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

I read this poem in college 40 years ago and never forget it. Putting it to music is great.
Thank you so much. This poem is really poignant, indeed.
Love this song! Great feel to it!
Thank you!
